This film from five years ago has actually become fairly relevant again these days because of Joachim Gauck's comments on the issue. It is about the Turkish genocide on the Armenian people roughly 100 years ago during the dark times of World War I. The mix of acting and documentary runs for roughly 90 minutes and is written and directed by Eric Friedler. It won best documentary at the German Television awards when it was released. The early and final parts of the film are exclusively documentary style. We hear interviews with politicians and historians and see recordings from back then. The middle part has some of Germany's finest actors, who play interviewees as well, people who lived during the days of World War I and tell about the events, bring in their very personal approaches most of them. The cast is really outstanding. I am not sure if there is a film that has so many known German actors. I won't name any of them. You can check the credits for that. Of course, most of them only have two or three scenes where they give us their approach. The only one I kept in mind with a negative association is Ludwig Trepte. He overacted a lot and it was painful to watch. He was maybe also the youngest fake interviewee and thought this is how he could keep up with the others. The likes of Gedeck and Klaußner scored with subtlety instead.
Anyway, what I enjoyed most about this are possibly all the old recordings. Also, you learn about a topic which is not too famous in terms of history. We never had that in school I think. I wonder if all this concealment will ever stop and the Turks will accept their responsibility for what happened. Looking at recent reactions from high-profile politicians from Turkey. Also, still many schools, memorials and other buildings honor the war criminals by carrying their names. It does not look very likely. I recommend this documentary.
