Review of Gozu

Gozu (2003)
2/10
Senseless
15 February 2014
You could call Takashi Miike's film 'Gozu' a comic gangster-horror film; but you might just as easily describe it as a semi-random collection of surreal, grotesque, eventually sexual but pretty much continuously senseless scenes and you'd probably have a more informative summary. I've rarely seen a film where I've felt less invested in the narrative; I don't know what response the director was aiming to induce in his audience other than "huh?" and "yuk". I liked Miike's 'Audition', whose strangeness and nastiness seem quite tame in retrospect, but watching this film was simply a waste of (quite a lot of) time.
