A Tale Well Told: superb movie by Shoojit Sircar.
25 August 2013
Shoojit Sircar's MADRAS CAFE is perhaps the first movie to come out of Indian film industry that has has no actors, just characters, including the well known star John Abraham. Their roles were so ingrained in the tale that every face in every frame was there, to move forward the story. Vikram, Jaya, Bala, RD, Sree were the names one remembers, not who played them. Therefore, the viewer does not get a chance to judge/comment whether a particular actor did a good job or not ! This speaks volumes of the director's capability to tell the tale without making any person more important than the story !

Throughout the 2 hours and 10 minutes of the film, one does not feel comfortable..although everyone knows the end. Shoojit was helped in his endeavor by excellent script, dialogues, cinematography, editing and music, all of superb quality. Persons responsible deserve all the kudos, but the biggest compliment goes the person at the helm. Shoojit Sircar has made a superbly crafted movie; and has jumped miles ahead of his contemporaries to become the best director of this generation.

For the audience who want quality cinema, here it is...go out in hordes and watch it, for "Madras.." deserves it much more than the poor cousin, "Chennai...", to show everyone you care for quality and not only for Express enjoyment that does not last.
