Unforgettable.
23 August 2013
I'd never heard of this ostensibly huge disaster until I started this documentary and I'm sure I'll never forget it now. Fire In The Night focuses on the now middle aged to elderly survivors of the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster in 1988 where only 1/4 of the crew survived. It's bizarre how this isn't an event that's already been made a Hollywood film because Fire In The Night is incredibly cinematic with its use of news reel, talking heads and re-enactments. It's made me realize the influence of Man On Wire on filmmaking as it seems the best docs have re- enactments now. Here they truly provide a vivid picture of how these men survived against near impossible odds. It's truly emotional watching them speak and I always love stories of truly ordinary people, especially Brits, being heroes. Although this documentary doesn't break new ground, it utilises the best contemporary techniques today to create a moving and informative picture. Definitely a recommended film for the year.
