Lego the Lord of the Rings (2012 Video Game)
9/10
The second best lego game yet!
27 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Lego Lord of the Rings is a brilliant game, it takes elements from the previous games and improves them. This time the game is based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the film even uses dialogue from the films.

There is a large open world, like Lego Batman 2. You travel in this world to levels, and too find characters and Mithril bricks when you finish the story. In the levels, you must solve puzzles and fight easy to kill bad guys to advance. Each character as there own abilities, like Sam can light fires or grow plants, Gimli can smash rocks with his axe and Legolas jumps higher than normal characters and has a bow.

A big change from the previous games is that two things can be going on at once. In one level, Gandalf is fighting the Balrog on a snowy mountain, whilst Sam and Frodo are trying to catch Gollum. This is fun when you are playing with a friend since you can help each other out, but it's very annoying if your playing on your won since you have to switch back and forth between areas.

Another new ability is that characters have an inventory. In previous games when a characters picks something up they have to hold it in their hands, but now they can carry up to eight items at once! Characters also pick up new weapons and items. Sam unlocks Elven rope, Frodo unlocks Sting and his Mithril coat. Pretty much every character learns a new skill throughout the story.

After you finish the main story, you can unlock all the characters, red bricks, Mithril bricks and many more items. If you like collecting things, you can easily get another 16 hours of play. This brings me onto a complaint, the main campaign is quite short. It's about 6 hours in total. You can find scrolls, which allow you to create new weapons and amour with your Mithril bricks. These pieces of amour give you other characters abilities. (So Gandalf could walk on tightropes like Legolas, or characters could run faster than they normally do).

Another complaint is that combat is boring. You hit an enemy, then you hit them again, then you hit them one last time and they die. It's a shame to have lots of weapons and a bland combat system. Also, there are some puzzles which can leave you stumped. I'm not sure how an 8 year old could get through them...

Despite the negative points the game is REALLY fun and is great for the family to play. The dark parts of the films are made funny, (When Gollum is trying to kill Frodo, Sam is sleeping with a teddy bear). If you enjoyed the previous games you should defiantly get this one.

Quick summary:

Pros- Huge open world, Lots of collectibles, Funny cut scenes, Iconic moments from the films, New features

Cons- Two things at once is annoying for one player, Combat is dull

Note: The best Lego game is Lego Batman 2!
