William & Kate (2011 TV Movie)
3/10
Harmless - but daft!
2 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The potty Prince of Wales (played by Ben Cross) was suitably dithery but far too hirsute and handsome; a tall man - yet dwarfed by an eight-foot tall William. I really hope that Ben was well-paid, because it must have been quite humiliating to exchange lines with nothing more than a series of made-over shop mannequins. Indeed, 'William's' barely discernible talent was not really helped by the fact that the Prince's nose was being played by a very un-Spencer/Windsor schnozzle. The only physical similarity between 'Kate' and our new Duchess of Cambridge was the fact that they both have long dark hair. Actually,it might have been a better plan to choose someone able to act and have her fitted with a good wig. On the subject of hair,'Harry's' red mop sat atop the owner of a mouth utterly incapable of sustaining a British accent. Mercifully, the royal bad boy only put in a brief appearance - but again - a good wig attached to another actor's dome might have raised the tone somewhat. However, if you treat this film like any other made-for-TV romance it is an inoffensive(even fun) way to pass the time. In fact,it was really easy to forget that the couple were supposed to be portraying 'real-life' people - which I suppose is a sine qua non of Lifetime (and Hallmark) movie characterisation. The most irritating (yet endearing)thing was their utter failure to research British social and cultural references.

Was it so low-budget that they couldn't even afford a Brit to help them get the details right? Of course it was! For instance, we don't tend to call University 'school' - that's for 5-18 year-old children over here in Blighty. The (ahem) Scottish pub music was more akin to that found in a New York 'Irish' bar. Ah, but I forgot, this is the wonderfully dopey world of Lifetime....

I simply cannot wait for the Hallmark take on the Royal story and am stocking up on toffee popcorn and ice cream.
