Dragon Trap (2010)

Wasted opportunity to be a much better movie

Ejder kapani starts as an intriguing crime mystery, but develops into a rather predictable plot and ends with a kind of dissatisfying conclusion. Fifteen minutes into the movie, I thought of the movie "The righteous kill" (which was lame!), guessed who the killer is, but remained an optimist for a little longer hoping there would be a more clever twist to it in the end. My initial guess was right, unfortunately. One big flaw in the plot, besides being unoriginal, was the lack of motivation for the killer to torture his victims. I just could not see where it came from. Bah!

There are some things I liked though. The cinematography was very much in line with the subject matter. The dark images, the gloomy atmosphere, the locations used that looked rustic and tired... The acting was pretty good too, especially by Ugur Yucel. As others commented, I had a problem with the sound editing though. I had trouble hearing/understanding what they were saying from time to time, and I even started to think that my Turkish must have been getting worse! Pheew, I'm glad it was not just me!

Well, overall I guess it was a good step for the Turkish cinema into this genre. I hope the ones that follow get to be a bit more satisfying.
