Rann (2010)

Does not live up to the hype

Warning: Spoilers
I had very high hopes for this movie. The subject matter chosen was very interesting and with RGV at the helm, this movie would be bloody amazing right? WRONG!!

It turned out to be a complete let-down for me. Judging by the "post- viewing" reactions of the folks sitting around me after the movie concluded, it appears that I am definitely not the only one.

The movie was an "epic phail" for me because of the following aspects:

1) The songs were absolute rubbish. Music was nice but the lyrics were asinine to say the least. However, this is simply a matter of taste and other movie-goers may disagree.

2) Over-usage of sound-effects to such an extent that it seemed like I was watching a spoof. Moreover, in certain instances, the timing of the "atmospheric music" was a bit off. It appeared that it was developed independently from the script and then just thrown in.

3) Overacting... truckloads of it. They brought some chap named Sudeep to play the role of Jai Malik. Now this bloke has quite a meaty role and one wonders whether it was sensible to cast an inexperienced actor in such a role. The actor who plays the part of his girlfriend is like a brick with a smiley face (maybe not, she's quite pretty) but she cannot act if her life depended on it.

4) Infantile distinction between good and bad. For instance, bikini-clad weather girls = evil. There are loads more, but it can be quite irksome.

5) The script writing is horrendous. There is a lot of stuff in the plot that just doesn't go anywhere.

6)Character development leaves a lot to be desired. Also, there are enormous plot holes in the movie, and to believe some of the things, you may have to take an enormous leap of faith.

***** possible Spoiler ******

7) The WORST monologue that I've seen in years. Its almost like a bleedin' K-serial. The entire audience in the hall started boo-ing, making snide remarks etc.

****** end spoiler ********

While I wouldn't say that this movie is the "worst movie ever made", but it definitely does not live up to the hype. There are a few good things about the movie... Rajpal Yadav adds a bit of slapstick humor (which another commenter found to be very intellectual and subtle LOL) and Big B does try his best. However it appears that his role is very little, just a little more than a cameo.

It is, at best, a mediocre movie. RGV appears to have completely lost his magic. Watch it if you must, but I would recommend giving it a pass.

**EDITED** The IMDb page for Rann appears to be over-run by fanboys resulting in the rating rising up to 8.3/10 (at present). In addition, there are a few reviews that absolutely go ga-ga over this mediocre excrement. It appears that this is part of the rather over the top PR campaign that the promoters are executing (TOI gave it a ludicrous 4.5/5). Which is rather ironic since the movie itself is about ethics.
