After GX, this spin off took a much more serious turn than even the original Yugioh series. As mention before Yugioh 5D's is about Yusei who lives in the poverish Satellite. After the first season's run dealing with Jack and Yusei's grudge and Goodwin's search for the five Signers to unlock the Crimson Dragon, a new threat has awoken. Enemies known as the Dark Signers have shown up in the Satellite and plan to take over the Satellite with the power of their negative energy which allows them to summon Dark Synchro monsters. Yusei's first encounter with a Dark Signer brings him face to face with his old friend Kalin who almost defeats him with a powerful beast known as an Earthbound Immortal. From there several more Dark Signers reveal themselves and have their own scores to settle with Jack, Luna and Akiza. Several interesting new characters are introduced and play critical roles in the second season's plot particularly Carly, a journalist who seeks Jack's love and Crow, an old friend of Yusei and Jack. Readers should know that this season is very dark and violent. On several occasions when new Dark Signers arrive the character must die in order to become one. Carly for instance is killed by Sayer when she becomes a Dark Signer. This season goes far beyond the dark themes of the Marik saga and Oricalchos saga of Yugioh and I sense it will not falter in its next season. Season 2 proves just how much 5D's belongs with the Yugioh canon.
