Review of Hysterical

Hysterical (1982)
7/10
A funny and forgotten horror spoof of the early 80's.

This spoof was not super great, it certainly was not as good as "Airplane" or "Top Secret", but it did something those two spoofs did by having its own plot. Rather than being a patchwork of scenes like the current crop of spoofs like the terrible "Meet the Spartans", "Epic Movie", and "Disaster Movie". Not to say this movie does not take a few scenes out of other films, but so did "Airplane" and "Top Secret". The "Exorcist" scene being the most obvious here. For the most part the jokes work, though watching the movie now it may seem really old and a tad dated to be sure. Still, it did have a rather original plot of the haunted lighthouse and the zombies that wore turtlenecks and said "what difference does it make?" all the time and the paranoid sheriff that believed the cause for all the mayhem was sharks. The cast is rather good, though the guy who played Exidor on "Mork and Mindy" was indeed a bit over the top at times. The scene involving the Indiana Jones wannabes and Dracula was a bit much too. Still, for the most part the jokes worked and like I said it had its own plot and was not simply a patchwork of scenes from other films. Granted the "Exorcist" scene did kind of take the cake as being the most funny in the film.
