Since it's debut in 2005, guitar hero has taken north America by storm...literally. now people can live their fantasies by playing their favorite songs, and bragging about it. there's many guitar heroes out there today. you're reading one's review.
But GH3? it certainly lives up to it's hype. stores like future shop and zellers were up to their neck in pre-orders (future shop even made a commercial based on the guitar hero game, and it shows the truth about real guitar heroes, guys who play the game, even when they don't play the game) and i remember going to get my copy (i didn't pre-order) at 6 in the morning on December 26th, 2007....within 20 minutes to half an hour, anyone who wanted a copy of GH3 would have to wait, because they all sold out.
OK, enough about how popular the series is.
In Guitar hero, the player has to hold down the fret buttons, and strum at the exact time the notes on the screen go under the outline, just like playing a real guitar. the whole idea is to play the song the best you can. if you miss too many notes, you fail the song, and you're booed out of the venue.
the soundtrack is actually quite good. when i brought GH3 home, my dad saw a lot of the songs, and told me to play them because he remembered them from his younger days. how awesome is that? my dad usually thinks video games are a waste of time, but guitar hero defies that.
And to add to the value of this game, it's considered the best PS2 game ever, with a 9.9 rating.
However, with all of it's awesomeness, it loses some key things. for example, some characters don't return in certain versions of the game For example, Pandora doesn't come back, and neither does the grim ripper in the PS2 version, and PS2 has no downloadable content like the Xbox 360 version, which kind of pees me off, because Linkin park is finally being featured in a video game, and they're my favorite band.
but if you thought the PS2 version is obsolete, you're wrong. if you can spend some time downloading a program from the internet, and risk losing the warranty to your PS2, you can put modded songs in the game. i remember one guy who took his GH2 game and put "One" from Metallica in it.
And ironically, "One" is in GH3.
Bottom line, go and buy this game. it's best you buy it with a guitar in the package, because playing it with a dualshock controller is a nightmare.
