Review of Underdog

Underdog (2007)
2/10
Difficult to watch
2 January 2008
Don't ask me why I decided to see Underdog. I was already aware of negative critical reception before seeing it, but this is just plain ridiculous. The story follows the typical super-hero structure: a normal beagle gains incredible powers (flight, fast movement, speech abilities) after an encounter with a mad scientist. Next, he finds an owner who designs a super-hero uniform. Then, Underdog proceeds to save the city from everyday dangers.

The acting, one-dimensional characters, dialog, and plot were horrible. Amazingly, the special effects were actually decent, although the scenes were put together in a careless type of way. There is some humor (occasionally creative), but I frankly didn't care. The rest of the movie was so dull and senseless that it becomes difficult to watch.

Perhaps part of the reason I had a terrible time was because I was obviously outside of the target audience (which is evidently under 10 years old). If I was that young, I'd like to imagine that I would make better use of my time by watching a true movie, but some kids enjoy this stuff. Avoid this excuse for a film at all costs.
