The Power of the Game is a documentary based around the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It follows the qualification campaigns of the national teams in South Africa, Iran and USA, whilst commenting on various issues within the world of football such as racism in Europe, difficulties of female soccer fans in Iran, overcoming apartheid in South African soccer and overcoming apathy in USA soccer. It is a very insightful and generally entertaining documentary. However, one expects more from a documentary directed by Michael Apted who is responsible for the ground breaking 7Up, 28 Up, etc. series. Also, for a documentary about the most popular sport in the world there is far too little football action. The Power of the Game seems to be mainly aimed at TV audiences and, as such, it's fine. It is, however, not a movie that I would pay to go and see in a cinema.
