Concentrated pack of clichés and stereotypes
22 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Another piece of stereotypical garbage cinema. As a Turkish living in Spain for some years now; I'm happy that this film didn't derange the Turkish image in Spain. In no sense the film depicts an average Turkish life, it all builds the story on oriental-ism; in which, everything from east is somehow bad. In that sense, film can be even considered as racist. All clichés against Islam and Turkey has been concentrated in a pack and presented as a film. And more, as far as i see, even commentators here are not aware that; Turkey is a Muslim country as much as Spain is catholic. No more no less. In Turkey, men don't lock their woman inside house (like in the film), violence against woman in Turkey is not more than that in Spain, women in Turkey doesn't dress as belly-dancers (which many Turkish women find quite stupid) to attract their men, 70% of Turkish today are living in a flat in an apartment - as a Turk i have never seen a house like in the film covered with bars to keep the women as a cattle. So that, a potentially nice Turco-Spanish romance story just finds its way to garbage. By the way, I'm paying a whole trip to Turkey to the person who can show me a house like Yaman's in Turkey.. Guys, get up from these clichés; Turkey has changed further than you think.. Well, if you want to think Turkey and Saudi Arabia as the same because of religion, lemme warn u that this would be as stupid as thinking UK and Russia or Peru is the same because of religion. The film is originating from the same load of garbage like Midnight Express or Not Without My Daughter. There are better things to watch out there.
