Gamera vs. The Pterodactyl Valedictorian
6 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
While I love monster movies as much as anyone, I'm a little surprised this movie has garnered such a high rating (6.4 out of 10). Generally, my ratings of horror movies are higher than the average. That's not to say this is a bad movie. But "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" really doesn't distinguish itself from most other Japanese monster movies. Gamera re-emerges from the depths of the Pacific to have a rematch with Gyaos, whom we call "The Pterodactyl Valedictorian" because he looks like a Pteranodon with a graduation cap glued to the top of his head. Special effects aren't great but they're much better than the bad, '60s-style creature effects of the old Gamera/Godzilla movies. In fact, both Gamera and Gyaos look like real Bad-a**es here. Where this movie diverges from the '90s-era Godzilla movies, and what I find odd about it, is that all the Japanese folks act as if they've never seen Gamera before. I mean, the guy has been in six or seven other movies since the mid-60s, including one other against this Gyaos dude. The dialogue throughout the movie is weird, too. That said, for your typical monster brawl movie it fits the bill.
