Review of Doom 3

Doom 3 (2004 Video Game)
Doom 3...well.....it looks the part..

But that is its biggest selling point.

There aren't a lot of tactics to Doom 3. You stumble about, mostly in the dark, and get constantly jumped by various monsters that appear out of nowhere. Or, to summarise....

Walk....shoot.....walk....shoot.....walk...shoot.

There are a number of scares, but after a while, you become numb to this and the sudden appearance of a demon in a room you just cleared, from being a shock becomes an annoyance.

The graphics are very good and well worth the effort of looking at, but the rest is just more of the same old Doom silliness.

There doesn't appear to be a heck of a lot of monster AI on display. When they spot you they come right at you....end of story. Likewise level design is just awful. We're supposed to buy that this is a Martian base? The ridiculous twisting levels and illogical layout constantly remind you of the fact that this is a game, and a badly imagined one at that.

I'm afraid, apart from the odd mindless gun-toting few minutes here and there, that this game isn't one to hold the interest or to encourage completion. Once you've seen one level, you've seen them all. Boredom is a factor that quickly sets in.

If you want a decent FPS with a little imagination, try Far Cry. It may not be as "atmospheric" or have as good graphics, but its way more entertaining and varied.
