10 year old girl uses magic pen to transform into teen model
30 May 2002
I see Bandai is going to be releasing the North American version in the summer of 2002 so I may as well tell you about this magical girl series. Fancy Lala is about an elementary school girl named Miho who likes to draw her own fashion designs. One day she gets a magic pen and pad from a pair of strange little dinosaurs. When she holds the pen and says the magic words Miho transforms into her teenage version which nobody seems to recognize as Miho. Anything drawn on the pad becomes real temporarily and Miho uses it to create clothes for her older self. For some reason she refers to her older self as Fancy Lala. Lala runs into a talent scout and that is how she becomes a model. The talent agency respects her need for privacy so they don't know where she lives and haven't met her parents and can only reach her by phone.

The stories are sweet and generally deal with the problems Miho has trying to hide her other life. There was one touching story about the consequences of trying to bring something to life with the magic pad. Another sad story was the adventure of Miho being trapped in a parallel world where no one would acknowledge her as the real Miho.

If you like Hime-chan's Ribbon you will probably like Fancy Lala too. You'll love that catchy theme song.
