Magical mystery for grown-ups
26 April 2004
This is an odd, but engaging film. In some ways it reminds me of Cohen Brothers movies. The subject is a minor mystery which I will not divulge in order not to spoil things for you. However it is told in a folksy, dreamlike manner, something like a favorite uncle telling you a strange, magical story just as you drop off to sleep as a child. This magical tone never falters. I know very little about film-making, but I imagine that the filming, audio, directing and editing must have needed firm control and an unflagging clear vision of what was to be accomplished for the result to be so seamless and magical. In my opinion this movie stands up quite well in any competition with other low-budget movies that I have seen from Europe, Australia and the US, or even with high-budget, but off-beat, non-Hollywood movies such as "The Full Monty".
