Review of Sugar Hill

Sugar Hill (1993)
8/10
Not your usual gangland tale...
23 March 2002
Anyone who did not find this cerebral journey into the underworld thoroughly enjoyable is clearly not a true fan of quality cinema. While lacking in the usual gangster genre body count, this film unravels like a Shakespearean tale replete with ominous villains, hedonistic temptations, and inner torment. The fact this film was not 'your father's gangster movie' made it all the more enjoyable.

While the pacing is at times pedestrian, the story does gather sufficient momentum that delivers a tense, dramatic third act pay-off. The characters are awash with a realistic sense of self, coupled with a fatalistic spirit of free will.

Put aside all of the cliche characters of gangster film lore, and prepare to delve into the mind of a new age gangster offering...one with filled with fear, regret, and yes woe!

Enough eye candy...time to engage your brain!
