Wild at Heart (1990)
Lynch Shot His Creative Wad with "Blue Velvet"
10 September 1999
Just awful. Contrived in the worst way and straining so hard to be weird and offbeat that the film comes off as pedestrian. The horror and weirdness in "Blue Velvet" was rooted in the real world---strange and offbeat but horrific because it was oddly familiar and the spectator could recognize enough elements of "real life" amidst the odd landscape that it took on the quality of a nightmare. Here, Lynch just creates a vacuum of weirdness that has nothing familiar to resonate or bounce off of, so the experience is just tedious and...dare I saw it?...pretentious. Ditto for "Lost Highway", an even worse film for almost the same reasons. Rent "Blue Velvet" again and avoid this overwrought and disappointing turkey.

The genius is trying too hard.
