The critical evolution of George Lucas' 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" has been fascinating to behold. To this author's memory, no film — not even "Avengers: Endgame" — was more feverishly anticipated. The advertising machine kicked into overdrive. Using 1999-era dial-up internet, "Star Wars" enthusiasts would spend all day downloading the film's trailer, watching it at home, combing it for details, all before such activities became common hobbies and online cottage industries. Lucas' film may be seen as a fulcrum in geek culture. Fandom wouldn't be the same after. Fans camped outside of theaters for weeks, eschewing both work and bathing, hoping to be the first to get tickets. "The Phantom Menace" may have been the first instance of customers buying many tickets at one time, committing to seeing the film multiple times before they had even seen it once.
Then they saw it once.

Scream Factory and Shout! Factory have added a treasure trove of older genre films to their catalog, and on August 25, Tales From the Darkside: The Movie, will join them. The producers of the popular TV show decided to make a feature with notable writers and filmmakers, like George A. Romero adapting Stephen King's "The Cat From Hell") and Michael McDowell writing the "Lover's Vow" segment and also adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot 249." John Harrison, Romero's assistant director on the Tales From the Darkside series, directed all segments and the wraparound story. The film is a classic anthology, with the three tales and the story that connects them all. In the wraparound story, Debbie Harry stars as a woman who's...

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. Horror has always been cyclical, and if that’s true, we have lucked out to be swirling around in a lot of good stuff. The best thing about 2019 in horror has been the variety: if you wanted a straight-up slasher, it was there. Ghosts? Covered as well. Creature features? Check. But in the world of horror, enough is never enough, so I’m going to plow through a whole whack of things I’ve liked and loved this past year.

No Time to Die will mark the last outing of Daniel Craig's James Bond, and he's going up against Rami Malek's mysterious villain. The first trailer for the movie shows Malek's character making eerie threats against 007 and rocking a white parka and a jagged, Phantom of the Opera-esque mask. Officially, Malek is playing a character named Safin, but fans have a major theory that this is just a red herring to disguise the fact that he's actually one of the most famous villains in the Bond canon.
On a thread about the trailer's release, Reddit user theenglishtom asked, "So - Rami playing a new Dr. No?" Several commenters agreed with the user, pointing out similarities in the sets and costume designs, among other elements. Spectre baddie Dr. Julius No was the villain in the very first Bond film ever, Sean Connery's Dr. No, and he's one...

Film has always been about illusion, or rather about projecting an illusion meant to fool the audience with a hopefully immersive experience. It’s all sleight of hand in the end, and a film’s success depends on the wits of the magician. But what happens when the illusion becomes real and crosses the line? This is a question raised by Effects (1980), a compelling treatise on snuff films, the responsibility of filmmakers, and where the line is drawn.
Made in 1979 by comrades in arms of George Romero, Effects was made for $55,000 but was never officially released except for a couple of one night screenings and festivals. It never even made it onto home video until decades later. Was the film deemed too taboo for the market? Hardly; some films just get lost in a mix of poor distribution and apathy. A pity then, as Effects has a lot to say about low budget,...

The Stephen King-inspired anthology series Creepshow has been granted a second season by horror streamer Shudder. While great to hear, this isn’t too surprising, as the show’s been a solid performer for the network, wrapping its first season on Halloween. Overseen by The Walking Dead‘s Greg Nicotero, Creepshow‘s commitment to old-school special effects have made it a treat for Shudder subscribers, with Deadline reporting that roughly half of the platform’s audience have seen at least one episode.
The original George A. Romero-directed Creepshow movie was a labor of love for Romero and King, and while later sequels offered diminishing returns (Creepshow 3 is particularly worth avoiding), its success set up a wave of horror anthologies in the 1980s and 1990s.
Commenting on the impact Creepshow has had on Shudder, the service’s Gm Craig Engler had this to say:

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero colleborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. It’s become a cult-classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 sees Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that will air on the horror streaming platform, Shudder. “You know it’s ok to be scared, right?”
Shudder has released another trailer for Greg Nicotero’s upcoming Creepshow series, which is based on the classic horror anthology film of Stephen King and George Romeo.
I’m super excited about this series revival, and the stories that are going to be told sound like some good old-fashioned creepy fun. You can tell that the creative team had a great time making this series and telling these stories.
This new trailer offers a lot of great new footage teasing the wonderfully terrorizing madness that awaits.

This Creepshow anthology series is going to offer some fun and horrific entertainment! I had the opportunity to watch the first episode of the series, which I really enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to watching the rest of them. You can tell that Greg Nicotero is having a blast making this series, which is a revival of the 1980s horror anthology films from George Romero and Stephen King.

Calling a faith-based release “preachy” could seem redundant, since these productions are designed as vehicles to evangelize. However, even within its spiritual niche, Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer” shocks for being even more oppressively loquacious than some of its many big-screen cousins.
If every line of stale dialogue landed like a hammer to the head, audiences would walk out victims of blunt-force trauma.
Kendrick, who co-wrote this with brother and perennial collaborator Stephen Kendrick, directs himself as John Harrison, a beloved basketball coach and history teacher at a Christian high school in small-town America. Life’s idyllic until his self-image crumbles after the local plant closes, forcing thousands of blue-collar workers to move elsewhere with their families. Lacking players, John is reassigned to coach the cross-country team, composed of one athlete with asthma: orphaned African American teen Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson).

No matter the setting or circumstances, the solution to every dilemma found in Christian Evangelical films is getting closer to God. That certainly holds true with regards to “Overcomer,” the latest bit of bigscreen proselytizing by writer-director-star Alex Kendrick. The story of a high school basketball coach who’s forced to take over a cross-country program with only one runner, it’s Its one-note sermonizing should help it appeal to its target audience, but those not already in the fold will likely be left unmoved.
When economic hard times hit his small-town community, compelling many of his star athletes to relocate, coach John Harrison (Kendrick) watches his expectations for a winning basketball season go down the drain. To add insult to injury, he’s ordered by Principal Brooks (Priscilla Shirer) to take over the cross-country squad — an unwanted assignment made more difficult by the fact that only asthmatic new student...

Golly gee, when was the last time there was a good horror show on TV? I guess The Terror probably counts (I’m assuming it’s scary due to its on-the-nose title). Otherwise, most reality TV is pretty terrifying. Zing! Got’em!
But I might also need to get Shudder soon, because they have a Creepshow series coming out. And ya know what? It looks like a lot of stylized, practical, spooky fun. Thank you, Comic-Con, for bringing us more gory good news, and showing us how much enjoyment we’ll get out of being scared by the upcoming anthology show.
In addition to being based off the films that featured horror titans Stephen King and George Romero, may his soul rest in peace, the cast looks to be stacked, too. We have splatter veterans Jeffrey Combs and Tobin Bell, and even Adrienne Barbeau. There’s also Giancarlo Esposito, Bruce Davison,...

There is a lot of love in the horror community for the old Creepshow films. So doing the new one right is very important. Thankfully for fans of the franchise there is some talent from the originals returning for this new series from Shudder. Writer/director John Harrison, who was 1st Ad on the original and composed its famous theme will work on five of the segments. Tom Savini, who created special effects makeup for the film, will direct a segment adpated from a story by Stephen King's son, Joe Hill. Hill played 'Billy' in the wrap around segments of the original film, written by his dad. The series showrunner Greg Nicotero contributed make-up effects to Creepshow 2. Yet. As much old blood and...

One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.
Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.
Along with Savini's return to the Creepshow franchise, Shudder also announced a casting update for the series, revealing that David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould have joined the cast. Read the official press release below for more information, and stay tuned to Daily Dead...

2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness was received very positively by critics, but substantially less well by committed Star Trek fans. Much of this criticism was rooted in the way the film turned out to be a stealth reworking of 1982’s The Wrath of Khan, which annoyed those who considered that J.J. Abrams’ remixing of the story didn’t make a great deal of sense. Not to mention that in the run up to the film’s release, he outright lied about Benedict Cumberbatch’s John Harrison being Khan Noonien Singh.
While the film doesn’t exactly remake The Wrath of Khan, it certainly references it pretty heavily, albeit with Spock and Kirk’s roles reversed. If you’ll recall, in the original, Spock sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise while Kirk watched on. In the 2013 effort, however, it was the other way around, leading to Spock recreating that famous moment where Kirk yells “Khaaaaaaaaaan!

Scream Factory’s new Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the 1982 horror anthology Creepshow might just be the release of the year. This is Creepshow as it should be.
Directed by the late, great George A. Romero and written by the equally great Stephen King, Creepshow remains, as far as this writer is concerned, the best horror anthology ever made. Well, I’ll say this, I did like Star Trek Into Darkness more than the previous film, but not by much. It was enough to recommend it, for the people who will enjoy certain parts of it, but I question whether or not those people actually like Star Trek, at all. I’m not what anyone would consider a trekkie, but I am a fan of the franchise, but J.J. Abrams‘s bastardization of it recently with his reboot of Star Trek in 2009, is merely a pale imitation. He knows the words, essentially, but he doesn’t know the music really, and besides that, he’s playing jazz with it, or at least what he thinks jazz is; he’s really just making a lot of noise.
Star Trek Into Darkness begins with Kirk (Chris Pine) violating about every statute of the Prime Directive to save Spock (Zachary Quinto) from getting swallowed from a volcano.

What the critics thought of The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan, The Letters of John F Kennedy edited by Martin W Sandler, A Story Lately Told by Anjelica Huston
"The Valley of Amazement doesn't waste any time. The long opening sentence leads us quickly into the only high-class courtesan house in Shanghai run by a white woman, where innumerable complications soon arise. Amy Tan maintains the pace skilfully as we follow the story of three generations of women, spanning the transition from dynastic rule to the early 20th century and travelling from Shanghai to San Francisco and on to a remote village deep in the mountains of China." Krys Lee in the Ft welcomed Tan's sixth novel, and pointed out that although the author has been "accused of exoticising her Asian roots, particularly by Asian readers", and although The Valley of Amazement "can indeed be seen as romanticising cliches...

New stage and film adaptations of The Great Gatsby attest to Scott Fitzgerald's enduring brilliance and his relevance to our boom and bust age
In one of his most famous and personal obiter dicta, F Scott Fitzgerald once bitterly observed: "There are no second acts in American lives." The author of The Great Gatsby, arguably the supreme American novel of the 20th century, knew what he was talking about.
Few writers have ever enjoyed a more brilliant first act. Fitzgerald's 1925 debut was sensational in a way that's only possible in a feverish, self-inventing society such as the Us. This Side of Paradise was a first novel whose language, characters and attitude haunted the Jazz Age (Fitzgerald's phrase) like a hit song. A five-year creative spree followed, culminating in the book originally titled "Trimalchio in West Egg". As The Great Gatsby, it was a novel that had awestruck critics, led by the young Ts Eliot,...

Charles Dickens won't officially turn 200 until February 7, but the Dickens 2012 extravaganza — festivals, theater, exhibitions, readings and so on — is well underway. And today, the BFI series Dickens on Screen opens at BFI Southbank in London for a run that'll last through February.
"No other novelist has been adapted for the screen so often or to such popular acclaim. Around 400 films and TV series have been made so far," writes Robert Douglas-Fairhurst in the Guardian. "In a famous essay published in 1944, the Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein argued that 'only very thoughtless and presumptuous people' believed in 'some incredible virgin birth' of cinema, and that the film pioneer Dw Griffith found many of his storytelling tricks, including close-ups, dissolves and cutting between parallel narratives, in novels such as Oliver Twist. Griffith admitted as much himself. One of his first films was a 14-minute version of Dickens's The Cricket on the Hearth (1909) that...
