In 2014, Kim won the Monte-Carlo Television Festival Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Martin Rohde in The Bridge (2011).

Kim became famous outside of Denmark in 2012 following the success of the Swedish/Danish crime drama series, The Bridge (2011), in which he played Martin Rohde, the homicide detective from Copenhagen in the first two seasons.
Kim followed his mother's suggestion that he apply for a place at the National Theatre School in Copenhagen when he turned 16. His first application failed, but his second application saw him gain entry a year later in 1987.
Kim performed mainly in comedies in the theatre group at Espergærde Ungdomsskole.
