1. Vampfather (2022)

93 min | Fantasy, Horror

Reeling from a family tragedy, a beautiful vampire who dreams of becoming human must unmask a deranged killer before the blame falls on her.

Director: Stuart Paul | Stars: Alix Villaret, Danny Trejo, Tom Sizemore, Marcus Shirock

Votes: 82

January 4, 2022 2/10

"VampFather is one of those movies that does fall into that so bad it’s good category by having some really weird choices, bad digital artifacting, weird lighting choices, reusing shots, hilariously bad dialogue and line delivery and some super silly musical choices. However, I will say Trejo was a lot of fun to watch as an aristocratic vampire and he’s definitely the standout. This never really shows the vamps doing anything besides hissing which is just a stock dog snarl. There’s a million fade to blacks and a lot of which or abrupt scene transitions. This is definitely a bad movie but it does have some charm. Sure there’s large sections in between that are hard to sit through to get to the funnier, head scratching scenes but I still feel like it could be a decent background party movie."

2. Belle (2021)

PG | 121 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

83 Metascore

Suzu is a shy high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters "U", a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a globally-beloved singer.

Director: Mamoru Hosoda | Stars: Kaho Nakamura, Ryo Narita, Shôta Sometani, Tina Tamashiro

Votes: 17,158

January 14, 2022 7/10

"Belle has some truly stunning animation with scenes so jammed pack full of details to shows how far the medium has come and what it’s capable of. While the story does a great job at building it’s characters and presenting themes of grief, abuse, social networks and coming of age. Ultimately the story boils down to a Beauty and the Beast rip off that became massively annoying and distracting for most of the film. Still it’s one of my favorite scores/soundtracks of 2022."

3. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)

PG | 87 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

46 Metascore

After one experiment, Johnny turns into a monster and everyone else becomes human. Now it has to be seen whether they will be able to reverse this experiment.

Directors: Derek Drymon, Jennifer Kluska | Stars: Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan

Votes: 39,039

January 14, 2022 3/10

"Starting the year off with the worst entry into the Hotel Transylvania series. Terrible animation and a lackluster story leads to frustrating times even if some of the cast replacements did a good job filling in."

4. Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2020)

70 min | Comedy, Sci-Fi

A cafe owner discovers that the TV in his cafe suddenly shows images from the future, but only two minutes into the future.

Director: Junta Yamaguchi | Stars: Kazunari Tosa, Riko Fujitani, Gôta Ishida, Masashi Suwa

Votes: 8,094

28 January 2022 8.5/10

"Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a Japanese Sci-fi film based around a cafe owner who realizes two tvs can be a view into the past and future of two minute intervals all while being shot in one take. The main gimmick of the film being that it’s suppose to be one take was actually something I didn’t pick up on until about half way through the film despite it apparently being on the poster. Personally I really loved it. The film felt very creative in it’s storytelling, using the time paradoxes to present some funny moments. It can get a but convoluted but is never anything that felt to break it’s own rules. Some moments of actors repeating scenes in past, present and future were pretty impressive. I will say most of the film is the group running back and forth between the two rooms, everything is set in one tiny location and there’s multiple scenes repeating themselves for the time loop but for me I never found it boring. This felt like an impressive and creative little low budget sci-fi flick that I really enjoyed."

5. Home Team (2022)

PG | 95 min | Comedy, Sport

23 Metascore

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton coaches his son's 6th-grade football team while he is being suspended for the entire 2012 season as a result of his role in the Saints' Bountygate scandal.

Directors: Charles Kinnane, Daniel Kinnane | Stars: Kevin James, Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, Jackie Sandler

Votes: 22,058

January 28, 2022 5/10

“Home Team is a family Happy Madison film that does have some humorous moments but is ultimately forgettable. There is enough here for a certain audience, someone like my mom.”

6. Jackass Forever (2022)

R | 96 min | Documentary, Action, Comedy

74 Metascore

After 11 years, the Jackass crew is back for another crusade.

Director: Jeff Tremaine | Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England

Votes: 51,827 | Gross: $57.74M

February 4, 2022 8/10

"Jackass Forever is exactly what you'd want a Jackass farewell to be as a long time fan. The stunts feel more brutal but there were so many moments where I was laughing with as much pain and the cast was in. I needed a good comedy and Jackass Forever came in for me."

7. Catwoman: Hunted (2022)

PG-13 | 78 min | Animation, Action, Crime

Follows Catwoman in an attempt to steal a priceless jewel. This puts her squarely in the crosshairs of both a powerful consortium of villains, Interpol and Batwoman.

Director: Shinsuke Terasawa | Stars: Elizabeth Gillies, Stephanie Beatriz, Jonathan Banks, Steve Blum

Votes: 3,523

8 February 2022 2/10

"Catwoman Hunted might be the worst DC animated film I’ve seen. The story follows Catwoman as she attempts to steal a precious jewel and is stopped by Batwoman and some cops who enroll Catwoman to help Batwoman bring down the criminal organization that Black Mask is involved with. First off, I hate the dialogue and one liners in this film. They are eye rolling and cringe inducing for almost every line. The quips are way too frequent where they became frustrating. The animation is rather bad too which is somewhat new for DC’s line of animation. There’s a specific car chase scene that comes to mind that looked terrible. There’s also some bad animation when it comes to the mouth animation during dialogue scenes. For the most part I thought the music in the film didn’t help the cheesy cornball tone as a lot is this jazzy score. Really disappointed with this one."

8. The Cursed (2021)

R | 111 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

62 Metascore

In rural 19th-century France, a mysterious, possibly supernatural menace threatens a small village. John McBride, a pathologist, comes to town to investigate the danger - and exorcise some of his own demons in the process.

Director: Sean Ellis | Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, Alistair Petrie, Roxane Duran

Votes: 16,744

February 18, 2022 7/10

"The Cursed was a fun take on the werewolf story with some great cinematography even if there is some shaky CGI. With great characters and some really punching gore effects, it’s hard not to get sucked into the tension. There’s some great choices in direction to let certain shots linger and for the most part holding off showing the monster which left the creature intimidating. Even after we got a good look at the creature, it’s design held strong to still make it unsettling even towards the end of the film. This is a fun little creature feature that isn’t corny but provides some real scares along the way."

9. Dog (I) (2022)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Drama

61 Metascore

Two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Briggs (Channing Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois) race down the Pacific Coast to get to a fellow soldier's funeral on time.

Directors: Reid Carolin, Channing Tatum | Stars: Channing Tatum, Ryder McLaughlin, Aavi Haas, Luke Forbes

Votes: 46,527 | Gross: $61.78M

18 February 2022 5.5/10

"Dog stars Channing Tatum and is co-directed by him about an army ranger who’s trying to get redeployed who has to take an Army Ranger K-9 to it’s human partners funeral. Along the way Tatum and the dog bond and it’s pretty formulaic. This is a film that was enjoyable enough during to not feel the runtime but doesn’t standout enough to be very rememberable over time. This is without a doubt though a film my Mom would absolutely love. I do like the fact that it’s not a cgi dog but a real dog so that’s nice. I don’t have too much to say about this one."

10. Ted K (2021)

R | 120 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

70 Metascore

An exploration of Ted Kaczynski's life in Lincoln, Montana in the years leading up to his arrest as The Unabomber.

Director: Tony Stone | Stars: Sharlto Copley, Drew Powell, Christian Calloway, Tahmus Rounds

Votes: 4,152

18 February 2022 7/10

"Ted K is a character study of Ted Kaczynski a.k.a. The Unabomber brought forth by a great performance by Sharlto Copley. The film really explores Ted’s mental state and what lead to his anger and frustration. Some good choices of direction and editing helped brought that headspace to life by having pushed audio and some almost distorted visuals and audio to feed into the frustration. My biggest issue with the film falls on the visuals. While there’s some good framing and some good visual moments, the film looks very cheap and by that I mean it looks to have been shot on a DSLR or something akin to that because of the inconsistent and bad color grading. There’s also some moments where it sounds like Sharlto’s South African accent slips in which doesn’t really affect the performance, just something I noticed. Other than that, this is a solid character study that is fairly well crafted."

11. Uncharted (2022)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure

45 Metascore

Street-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.

Director: Ruben Fleischer | Stars: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali

Votes: 259,809 | Gross: $148.65M

February 18, 2022 3/10

"Uncharted features some of the worst casting I’ve seen in a while as Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg really feel like they’re phoning it in. They story feels like a quick cut from the games and felt like it undermined the characters a bit especially Victor Sullivan. The action for the most part isn’t exciting and the under laying score is cliche and boring. The film looks incredibly fake as almost everything that is green screened or CGI looks pretty bad. There are a few moments where the source material shines through and the film feels true to it’s roots but unfortunately those are few and far between. Uncharted should have been one of the easiest games to convert into a movies."

12. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

R | 81 min | Crime, Horror, Thriller

34 Metascore

After 48 years of hiding, Leatherface returns to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town.

Director: David Blue Garcia | Stars: Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham, Jacob Latimore

Votes: 61,657

February 22, 2022 2/10

"Going to be hard to beat this one for worst of the year. A terrible story with weak characters that you hate seeing on screen, the only positive was some of the gore effects were decent, the rest of the film is slock that I don't recommend wasting your time on."

13. Hellbender (2021)

86 min | Horror

70 Metascore

A lonely teen discovers her family's ties to witchcraft.

Directors: John Adams, Zelda Adams, Toby Poser | Stars: Zelda Adams, Toby Poser, Lulu Adams, John Adams

Votes: 6,618

24 February 2022 7.5/10

"Hellbender is a film made by the Adams Family, a Mother, Father & daughters troupe that’s been making some pretty interesting films that utilize their micro budget and resources pretty effectively. This time around a witch or hellbender has a daughter who is starting to discover her powers and bloodlust. The dynamic between them feels truthful and real, probably because they are actually mother and daughter. The power struggle between the two is captivating to watch and can lead to some horrifying trippy imagery. Both leads give solid performances that mixed with a great punkish grungy score and soundtrack can make for some unforgettable moments. This personally is probably my favorite I’ve seen so far from the troupe."

14. Studio 666 (2022)

R | 106 min | Comedy, Horror, Music

50 Metascore

Legendary rock band Foo Fighters move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much anticipated 10th album.

Director: BJ McDonnell | Stars: Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins

Votes: 14,400

February 25, 2022 6.5/10

"Studio 666 isn’t a great movie but it is a fun movie. The film follows The Foo Fighters as they go to record a new album when demons in the house begin to demon. For the most part the acting is bad, the cgi demons look terrible and the film does something I always hate. When a film goes Meta and people are basically playing themselves in the movie, when you cast other famous actors and they don’t play themselves but rather a fictional character it’s really distracting. Still though, between the band’s chemistry, the plot set up, some fun gore effects and its tongue and cheek nature it’s a really fun popcorn watch."

15. After Yang (2021)

PG | 96 min | Drama, Sci-Fi

78 Metascore

In a near future, a family reckons with questions of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down.

Director: Kogonada | Stars: Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Justin H. Min

Votes: 23,011

4 March 2022 6.5/10

"After Yang is a futuristic story about how a family deals with their family android malfunctions. The story presents themes of how technology plays a part of the family dynamic and how it can separate them while also presenting themes of what is humanity in terms of it’s worlds clone and android population that feels to present messages about racist tendencies despite the mainly cast being racially diverse. However, I feel like the film, while presenting these themes, may not have explored it in a way to also make the film more engaging as moments felt to drag quite a bit. The film is well shot and I love the aesthetic of the world it built. There’s a lot of interesting concepts here in terms of the worlds technology and it’s vague hint at a previous world and reproductive issues but again it’s not explored in a way that makes the film as gripping as I was hoping for."

16. The Batman (2022)

PG-13 | 176 min | Action, Crime, Drama

72 Metascore

When a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.

Director: Matt Reeves | Stars: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell

Votes: 787,859 | Gross: $369.35M

March 4, 2022 8/10

"The Batman is a brooding and dark take on the Dark Knight with some amazing cinematography and score. Pattinson is great as Batman. For me though as the mystery unfolds, I found it to be rather predictable and at moments you can feel the 3 hour run time. Still The Batman is a great entry to the Bat's cinematic legacy and I wouldn't mind venturing further into the universe."

17. Moon Manor (2022)

103 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

Jimmy throws himself a fabulous FUNeral before his curated death, proving the art of living is the art of dying. A comedy with a star-studded cast and the debut feature from female filmmakers KnifeRock. Score by The Dream Team (Coldplay).

Directors: Machete Bang Bang, Erin Granat | Stars: Debra Wilson, Richard Riehle, Gayle Rankin, Ricki Lake

Votes: 612

March 11, 2022 7.5/10

"Moon Manor presents the fact of mortality with levity around a fascinating lead character. It’s a simple setting and story that is hard not to fall for it’s charm. The film does have some cheesy moments or some jokes that can fall flat but also has some really interesting perspectives on mentality. This is a little gem of a film."

18. Turning Red (2022)

PG | 100 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

83 Metascore

A thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.

Director: Domee Shi | Stars: Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park

Votes: 152,876

March 11, 2022 4/10

"Turning Red, to me, is one of Pixar's worst in their line up. Bad looking animation with annoying one dimensional characters that presents a relatively good message but falls flat as a metaphor. With a lack of good humor or an interesting conflict that we haven't seen a million times by now, Turning Red feels like a cheap rip off of Brave."

19. Umma (2022)

PG-13 | 83 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

51 Metascore

Amanda and her daughter live a quiet life on an American farm, but when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother.

Director: Iris K. Shim | Stars: Sandra Oh, Fivel Stewart, Dermot Mulroney, Odeya Rush

Votes: 10,598

18 March 2022 2.5/10

"Umma follows Sandra Oh’s character as she is a bee keeper with a teenage daughter and gets sick from electric. As her daughter might be preparing to leave for college and Sandra Oh gets word of her mother’s passing, the false spoopins start happening. This is a film that is exactly everything I hate in horror movies. Relying solely on musically cues to induce tension instead of building it naturally in scenes. Poorly written characters that, while have developmental, make consistently stupid choices that leads to frustrating moments and a ton of false jump scares you just left me feeling annoyed. Sandra Oh really felt like she was just there for a paycheck while the rest of the cast were pretty decent. I do like some of the themes presented here about mental illness and generational trauma. I enjoyed the backbone to this story but unfortunately the rest of the body was like me, frustratingly ugly."

20. X (II) (2022)

R | 105 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

80 Metascore

In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi

Votes: 173,773

March 18, 2022 6.5/10

"X is a fun slasher exploitation with a strong performance by Mia Goth and some really fun visuals. The film doesn’t hold back the brutal gore as a group rents out an old house from an old couple to shoot a porn film. This plot alone lead to some really creepy moments between the porn group and the old couple but once it hits the fan, it hits the fan. It’s a fast paced little film that is an enjoyable ride but lacks a since of a strong identity that will make it stand out among the rest in this genre. A lot of the characters are rather one note, there’s moments of course the characters make dumb decisions and the film doesn’t really make you root for anyone to make it out. Still not a bad little slasher-spoliation."

21. Windfall (2022)

R | 92 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

52 Metascore

A man breaks into a tech billionaire's empty vacation home, but things go sideways when the arrogant mogul and his wife arrive for a last-minute getaway.

Director: Charlie McDowell | Stars: Jason Segel, Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons, Omar Leyva

Votes: 26,723

March 18, 2022 5.5/10

"Windfall stars Jason Segal, Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins is about a man played by Segal breaking into a billionaires house as the couple played by Plemons and Collins return home unexpectedly leaving Segal stuck with the couple as he tries to figure his way out while extorting money from them. It’s not a bad little thriller as the three give great performances and Segal gives one of the better I’ve seen from him. My issue with the film is the massive amount of downtime since we aren’t presented with much outside of the predicament the characters are in. Sure Segal starts off as the bad guy but as the film goes on the table turns as we learn more about the characters but that was pretty predictable. Segal’s character at times is also way to incompetent to be believable at moments and some of the attempts at humor don’t land. There’s good pieces here as the film looks good but is sonically vacant as the score is unnoticeable. What really hold the film together is the solid performances."

22. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

R | 139 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

81 Metascore

A middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.

Directors: Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert | Stars: Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan

Votes: 533,729 | Gross: $72.86M

25 March 2022 9/10

"Everything Everywhere All At Once is a master class in vfx and storytelling. The film follows a Chinese immigrant family who’s running a laundry mat who’s also massively behind on taxes. There’s a bunch of turmoil in the relationships within the family and out of nowhere we are presented with multiple dimensions, dimension hoping and a lot of wild and crazy things that makes this film so much fun. They keep the multiverse exposition rather simple to help focus on the characters in the moment and the film does an amazing job giving every main character a deep rich history which compliments the films message of mental health, family emotional connections, trauma and the stress of it all. The film presents these ideas and ties them all together with a lot of great visual foreshadowing and metaphors. The entire cast’s great performances also help in cementing the chemistry. This is a film that you’ll probably pick up more and more the more you watch it. Even the stunt work for the fight scenes are great. This one could go up on a second viewing."

23. RRR (2022)

Not Rated | 187 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

83 Metascore

A fearless warrior on a perilous mission comes face to face with a steely cop serving British forces in this epic saga set in pre-independent India.

Director: S.S. Rajamouli | Stars: N.T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt

Votes: 167,422 | Gross: $14.50M

March 25, 2022 7.5/10

"RRR is an absolute wild ride that gives you tonal whiplash jerking between comedy, romance, musical, drama and being straight up brutally violent in the best way. Every element is completely over the top and for a movie over three hour longs it flew by. This is a film that revels in it’s spectacle in the vein of that doesn’t make any sense but it is cool as hell. There’s moments where the special effects really falter and character moments and plot lines that feel either rushed or undeveloped, some character actions are goofy and sometimes doesn’t make sense but the level of spectacle would even tickle Michael Bay’s taint."

24. You Are Not My Mother (2021)

93 min | Drama, Horror

74 Metascore

In a North Dublin housing estate Char's mother goes missing. When she returns Char is determined to uncover the truth of her disappearance and unearth the dark secrets of her family.

Director: Kate Dolan | Stars: Hazel Doupe, Carolyn Bracken, Ingrid Craigie, Jordanne Jones

Votes: 5,872

25 March 2022 6.5/10

"You Are Not My Mother is an Irish horror film that follows Char as her Mother is suffering from extreme mental illness. Using that mental illness to manifest the horror throughout the film. The story reminded me a long of The Babadook but maybe a little more on the nose about it’s message on the horrors of mental illness and how a parents illness can affect their child. Not to say The Babadook was a little on the nose as well. One of the highlights for me was Carolyn Bracken who plays the mother as she gave a stand out performance. As for the horror side, this felt more like a family drama with horror elements to me that worked for the story but don’t expect to be jumping out of your seat since the plot is rather predictable. Still it’s a pretty well shot film with some strong elements."

26. Nitram (2021)

112 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

81 Metascore

Events leading up to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre on Tasmania in an attempt to understand why and how the atrocity occurred.

Director: Justin Kurzel | Stars: Caleb Landry Jones, Judy Davis, Sean Keenan, Essie Davis

Votes: 10,374

March 30, 2022 7.5/10

"Nitram is the new Justin Kurzel joint about the Port Arthur massacre that boasts an amazing lead performance by Caleb Landry Jones. The film carries a some of Kurzel’s style but feels more patience than some of his other films, missing that frenetic energy that moments in this film needs. The film also feels a bit lacking in Kurzel’s visual style that I really enjoy and is somewhat absent of music that could have inflated the film based on his other choices of music in past films. Still Nitram is a gripping character study into a mass murder that is both gripping and unnerving. The score could go up on a second viewing."

27. Morbius (2022)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

35 Metascore

Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.

Director: Daniel Espinosa | Stars: Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris

Votes: 153,557 | Gross: $73.87M

1 April 2022 3/10

"Morbius being the biggest movie meme of the year, I had to check it out. Even with lowered expectations, this was pretty much exactly as bad as everyone was saying. The story of Morbius has moments where you see that this could have been decent but with Leto being one of the most unlikable leads, terrible cgi and a rushed plot with little character development, lead to a forgettable watch. There are some plus sides though, for one the film is so rushed that the hour and forty so minutes just fly by. There’s also some ironically hilarious moments especially with the Man Bat character designs. They were never really intimidating but at moments had me chuckling. This could have been something else but what we got was a meme with a meme lord in the center."

28. Metal Lords (2022)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Music

59 Metascore

Two friends try to form a heavy metal band with a cellist for a Battle of the Bands.

Director: Peter Sollett | Stars: Jaeden Martell, Adrian Greensmith, Isis Hainsworth, Noah Urrea

Votes: 32,903

April 8, 2022 5.5/10

"Metal Lords has somethings going for it I really love. For one the music, but also how the intergrade that music into the plot. I also really love the ending set piece but there’s a lot I really hated about the film. For one the plot is very predictable with some rather unlikable leads that gives the audience nothing to care about with them. There’s multiple moments where I felt like the writers have never been to a real high school before. The writing just lead to many frustrating moments.Best thing I can say about the film is Isis Hainsworth who gives a stand out performance and by the far the best in the cast."

29. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

PG | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

47 Metascore

When the manic Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Tails is all that stands in their way.

Director: Jeff Fowler | Stars: James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter

Votes: 87,527 | Gross: $190.87M

April 8, 2022 1.5/10

"Sonic 2 takes everything that made the first film terrible and cranks the dial to be one of the most obnoxious films I’ve seen. Every line from Sonic and Eggman is either a pun or a joke that falls flat every time. Sonic is without a doubt one of the most unlikeable characters ever made in these films. I thought that now with the origin story out of the way from the first movie and introducing some more Sonic characters that the sequel would improve on the first but instead does everything far worse. Tails adds nothing to the film other than frustrating inconsistencies with the CGI. Knuckles has a few good moments but has a serious lack of character development that left a crucial character moment in the film feel like a flat switch with nothing provoking it. Without a doubt, this film has some of the worst CGI I’ve ever seen from a major studio movie including moments where live action actors are clearly not looking in the right direction of the CGI characters. This is a cheap looking film that was a slog to get through."

"The Northman follows prince Amleth after his father is killed by his uncle as a young boy. When he barely escapes his own death he vows vengeance. This to me is my favorite of the Eggman’s movies, I loved it. The story is gripping from start to finish. The brutality of it’s nature is gut wrenching at times even if this isn’t a super action packed film. The fight choreography felt almost like expressive dance motions rather than random swings of a sword. The cinematography put’s almost every frame in a picturesque moment. However I did hate the choice to do most of the night scenes as a day to night where they shot in the day and then color corrected to night. This film doing it in pretty much black and white it was still a decision that took me out of the moment. The score was also amazing, honestly there’s very little I didn’t like about the film and I’d strongly recommend it."

"As a long time Nic Cage fan I’ve been really excited for this one and I’m happy to say it did not disappoint. Cage and Pedro Pascal both expertly bring an amazing script to life. By far the best parts of the film for me was Cage and Pascal’s chemistry together on screen and how the story unfolds with it’s crazy over the top meta points that goes almost beyond meta in a beautiful way. However, this film falls into that trope I hate where actors are playing themselves but then you have other famous actors people fictional characters. My only other real complaint was the look of the film. It’s shot well enough to not really be distracting and has some great transitions but most of the cinematography felt bland especially when it comes to the color palette. Still this is a really fun, funny well written love letter to the Cage."

"We’re All Going to the World’s Fair follows a young girl doing a YouTube like challenge and documenting her experience all while some unknown guy communicates with her furthering the experience and while the film presents some good ideas and moments here and there, most of this 85 minute runtime is filled with filler. I enjoy the patience to hold on a shot and have these long takes but some felt long and slow to artificially inflate the runtime. What is presented here could have been easily told in a 30 minutes or less short. There’s little meat here and could have made room for more of a mental breakdown or really just more of anything. I like the premise here and also Anna Cobb’s performance as Casey. I also like the fact that scenes that’s suppose to be filmed by a webcam or cheaper camera look like they were actually filmed on that equipment rather than a high end camera edited. Still this was a rather empty experience for me."

"Bubble has some beautiful animation but a rather hollow story that makes some of the more intense scenes falls flat. The story follows a parkour team living in the ruins of Tokyo after a weird disaster when bubbles began to fall. After the city becomes abandoned, runaways move back and form parkour teams where they compete for money and goods. Then a mysterious girl shows up and our main character Hibiki falls for her but the bubbles say something else. Honestly the story is the weakest part here. It’s serviceable but the main characters feel under developed and the story reaches moments where there’s spectacle on the screen but doesn’t seem to add much to the story. The love plot and the whole bubbles thing alway felt under developed. By far the best part is the animation with a lot of picturesque moments and I really loved the parkour scenes and how they were animated."

"I just watch Memory and it was meh, ok I guess. The film follows Liam Neeson’s character, generic action Liam Neeson character 262 who is a killer for hire with dementia who turns against his employers when he is tasked with killing a kid to cover up some bad business. Guy Pearce plays a detective trying to solve the murders and it’s just a straight to video type of Liam Neeson action thriller that is very middling and forgettable while doing nothing offensive. It’s just right down the middle. Sure I wasn’t really bored watching but I also felt I could have spent my time doing something, which I kinda did because I was streaming Pokemon while watching."

"Poupelle of Chimney Town is full of rich characters and a beautiful animation style that feels somewhat unique. The film follows a young boy Lubicchi, a chimney sweep, when he comes across and befriends Poupelle a trash monster. Set in a fascinating world with an overbearing government that presents a real threat, the two try and prove that stars exist when the entire city doesn’t believe them due to the years long pollution in the air. While the film has a lot of similarities to Jack Frost (1998), it’s unique enough to not be a distraction. Using great moments of it’s visual aesthetic to create some truly great character moments. The world building also helps set up what feels like an organic environment and the writing helped even smaller side characters to feel developed. Another thing I loved was the score, this is a score and or soundtrack I’d listen to outside of the film. I really loved this one."

"Doctor Strange comes back with Sam Raimi at the helm to bring one of the funnest entries into the MCU. Wacky and over the top, this feels like a true blockbuster filled with comic pulp and glances of some truly horrific moments, I was glued throughout. Sure moments of the CGI is noticeable and there’s plot holes that made me raise questions to certain character actions. "The Sadness might be the most hardcore film of 2022 seeping into that ultra disturbing, ultra gory sub catalogue of films akin to Cannibal Holocaust, minus the found footage aspect. A film about a pandemic where everyone turns extremely violent and extremely sexual leads to some truly gruesome and unflinching moments that will make you squirm in your sits. Considering much of the effects are done practically, the film looks great in terms of make up and gore effects but moments of CGI is incredibly noticeable. For a film that goes from zero to a hundred, it does a great job with it’s pacing to fly by. There’s moments of let down but the film plays with the idea that anyone could be sick and could turn at any moment so well that these moments of cool down actually act as more of a nervous tension as you wait wondering who will snap next. The only real draw back is that this isn’t not a super fun flick to watch as the violence, while cartoonish at some points, is never played for fun but rather a brutal beating that makes a rewatch less appealing."

"Pleasure follows an inspiring adult film start Bella Cherry that feels like a more honest look into an industry that feels to have a misunderstood or misrepresented perception. While there’s a lot of graphic things happening in the film and it’s one I definitely wouldn’t recommend watching with the parents, it’s still a really solid film about a character and the extent they’d go to achieve their goal. The way the film presents a lot of the more graphic or intense scenes is actually really impressive as the way the film is shot and edited actually helps put you into the mind of the main character as she is experiencing these moments in a impressive way. This isn’t one that I’ll be rewatching that much but there is a lot to appreciate here."

"The new Chip N Dale reboot has no right being this good. The film follows Chip N Dale years after their TV show as the gang had parted ways, Dale even getting a 3D animated make over which is one my favorite parts of the film. The blending of many different animations styles is amazing. Sure there are some noticeable inconsistencies but for the most party it’s really awesome. This film is filled with references and I fell hard for the nostalgia bait because Chip N Dale used that to build an organic environment that serves the plot rather than to just be there for no reason like in Ready Player One. With a grain of salt, there are some references that felt like references for reference sake but those felt far and few between where most felt fun and serviceable. I haven’t laughed this hard at a film in a while. The film gets away with a lot of subtle jokes and not so subtle to the point where it’s kind of surprising when you see what they did. That sense of self awareness lead to some great commentary about the entertainment industry and actors that made the film feel like a true successor to Roger Rabbit. It was a really fun and enjoyable film that I’ll probably watch again even if there is some unintentional cringe humor and a very predictable plot."

"Lux Æterna is Gasper Noé’s excuse to punish the viewer, pushing them into an epileptic seizure while exercising experimental visuals that’s an interesting presentation for a story about actors on set. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Béatrice Dalle who play themselves on a film set shooting an art piece about witches burning. During the work up to the scene we spend time wandering around a chaotic set that adds a sense of anxiety from the presentation and how the on set drama unfolds. Personally I adore the visual presentation here and was really enjoying the films story as a backstage pass experience but I’m sorry, the ending is a straight up 10-15 minutes of sensory assault that does ruin the experience as a whole for me. It’s an interesting short that thrives in it’s experimentation but feels more for die hard Noé fans only."

The film is directed by Alex Garland and the simple version of the story is about Harper played by Jessie Buckley who rents a castle in the country when a mysterious man shows up and the town begins to feel strange. However, this is a deep story about emotional abuse, post traumatic stress disorder and the social constructs, beliefs and differences of Men and Women that’s rooted in religious ties to society. There’s a lot to take in all while Garland builds some of the most intense and visceral scenes I’ve seen in a while. "Top Gun Maverick not only does everything better than the original but it also expands upon it’s character to deliver a much more enriching cast. This time around, Cruise is recruited to train a group of pilots for a mission that seems unlikely they will survive. First off, like I said, this film does almost everything better than the first, while also feeling like a spiritual successor and true to the original. It almost makes the original seem better. Right out of the gate the flying scenes are thrilling, they look amazing. The cinematography is a step up and I also like the fact that the music isn’t constantly in your face. Yes there’s still a cheesy love plot but most of this film is action set pieces that are engaging. Making the characters have more depth and connections leads to more suspense in these set pieces that the first film was greatly missing. While I did love a lot of the improvements, this isn’t a film that I’d really care to rewatch anytime soon. It’s definitely enjoyable to watch, but I think I’m good with one viewing."

"Dashcam is a movie I went into knowing nothing about it other than the whole thing was suppose to be like a live stream dashcam thing. Like the whole movie was filmed to look like that aesthetic and it wasn’t exactly what I expected. The film is about Annie Hardy who is a streamer who basically drives around while also performing really bad rapping. She goes to the UK during covid since she’s an anti-vax, anti-masker to a former bandmates place when they get into a fight and she goes to deliver food with this movies Uber eats. From there this movie goes off the walls and due to it’s lightning fast nature and just the absolute craziness it goes to I found myself really enjoying despite some massively glaring issues such as Annie is one of the most obnoxious and dumb lead characters in a while, everyone in the film makes stupid and unbelievable choices and my biggest issue has to do with the live streaming aspect. The chat is great to read and adds lot of humor and information but there’s large sections where Annie gets disconnected from the stream and the film keeps going which is not how that works and it comes off as lazy since they probably didn’t want to come up with all those chat messages. Still I had a pretty great time with this one."

"Crimes of the Future is Daddy Cronenberg’s return to body horror and it’s a pretty interesting piece. The story follows a pair of body performance artists in the future where people are evolving to grow more organs. Viggo Mortensen’s character is one of those people so to remove the extra organs, him and his partner put on performance pieces all while there’s a mystery surrounding the murder of a young boy who ate plastic. It’s weird but it lives inside this world well enough to understand it. The film presents a lot of themes of asking what is art, themes of human evolution, ideas of progressive and regressive thinking and themes of pollution. There’s a lot going on here and personally not everything came across well on screen. My favorite parts of the film is easily Howard Shore’s terrific score and the amazing performances from the entire cast. I also really loved the set design. "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko is an animated film about a young girl living in a small town with her loud, overweight mother and it was decent. By far the best part of the film was it’s beautiful animation and it’s over the top wacky sense of humor that carried the film. Nikuko, the mom, is a fun character but what held the film back was the lead Nikuko, the daughter. The daughter is a rather horrible person who is constantly embarrassed by her mom but the main reason is because the mom is over weight and fun? She can be down right mean to her mother to a point where it’s hard to like the main character. I’d much rather have the entire filmed centered around the mother. There’s literally a scene where the daughter is like, your fat and ugly and annoying and people talk shit about you behind there backs and your super embarrassing but, love you."

"Hustle is one of those movies where if you’re previously more invested into the subject matter, the more you’ll get out of it. What brought me here was Adam Sandler and the generally good reviews. I’ve always like Sandler but when you get more dramatic roles out of him, you normally get something special and Hustle is no different as he steals the show. The story of Sandler being a basketball scout and putting everything on the line for a no-name really doesn’t add much to the underdog story. It’s predictable but does have some good characters and is well paced. I could see fans of basketball getting a lot more out of this than myself who was lost on some of the name dropping and vocabulary. Still not a bad film, just not my subject."

It’s a chunky mess of a film with a lot of dumb character actions that make no sense. Like just shoot the dino in the head, how about we don’t just stand next to them while they’re attacking people. "The Righteous is a tight mystery horror film about an ex priest after he and his wife’s daughter dies and a mysterious man shows up at their house. Quickly the vibe of the film starts to feel off as the atmosphere pulls you under while the mystery deepens. Through simple dialogue scenes expertly performed, you are slow dripped clues as to what is happening that can lead to an interpretable ending. All leads give outstanding performances and I love the use of lighting to convey tone and messages throughout the film. The black and white is harsh which can invoke some striking imagery even if the framing is rather standard but that choice of black and white also nicely contrasts the tone of the narrative. The films horror plays out more emotionally rather than physically which pushed my dread even further. I really loved this one and can’t recommend it enough."

"Mad God is a film that’s been on my watchlist for a little while now and while I love a lot of the animation, world and set designs and overall aesthetic of the film, the lack of a cohesive plot made exploring the world stale and made the film seem to drag. There’s some truly stunning moments of animation with large intricate sets and a ton of moving pieces but there’s also some really bad moments of live action green screen. Another thing that I really didn’t like was the score which felt unfitting to the scenes. There might be more grandiose messages here but to me it wasn’t presented in a way to be noticeable. The film felt more like scenes of grotesque moments for no other reason then to be grotesque. If the film would have just followed the main guy through this nightmare world it might have been more interesting as an exploration film about the world that would justify the unnecessary grotesque moments but the film doesn’t. It bounces around between different characters with no development. I’m pretty disappointed with this one even though there’s some good elements."

"Brian and Charles is a comedy about Brian a lonely inventor who ends up making an A.I. robot Charles and the two become friends. The film mixes elements of a mockumentary to add to it’s quirky tone that works really well. David Earl who plays Brian honestly gives one of my favorite performances of the year. The interactions between Brian and Charles are fun and full of heart, there’s a romance plot, not between those two but Brian and another character that’s emotional and heartwarming. My biggest issue really lies on the pushed villain of the movie. It’s an angle that just felt unnecessary and took away from the experience a bit. The film is pretty well shot and has some decent music. It’s one that could go up or down on a second viewing but it was definitely charming."

"Going into Lightyear I didn’t want to compare it to Toy Story but I felt like most of the time watching wondering why even make the story about Buzz and just not a new IP space character. Yes visually the film looks astonishing but that doesn’t make up for a plot that was just underwhelming. Buzz is one of the most one note characters I’ve seen in a while and the rest of the gang around him actually seem more dimensional then our main character despite not really adding much to the plot. Socks is definitely the most frustrating character as he serves to be nothing more than a plot device and “oh look it’s cute.” Lightyear rarely does anything offensive and actually had a pretty stellar intro scene but unfortunately never reached those highs again and ended up being a film that I’ll probably forget about in a few months."

Greg Sestero from The Room shows up but the best part was watching George Hardy on screen again who made his name in Troll 2 and he’s perfect as the mad doctor. Unfortunately there’s a lot of down time in this one with not enough strong elements to carry you through which definitely made the film drag."

"Beavis and Butthead are back on Paramount plus for another feature length outing. This time around the boys get launched into space after they show their “docking” skills. After Beavis and Buttheading the operation, they get sent out into space to die but instead get sucked into a black hole and returned to earth years later. Beavis and Butthead was always a show I liked in smaller doses but never went much out of my way for. The previous film and the new film I have pretty much the same feelings about, it’s not really for me. The whole film is one long punchline of the boys thinking they’re going to have sex with fellow astronaut Serena when she wants to kill them to cover up the debacle in space. Every joke is a sex joke that can get tiresome after a while but it does feel honest to what I remember the duo being like. I feel like if you’re a Beavis and Butthead fan than you’ll probably enjoy it but for me I just need them in shorter dosages."

"The Black Phone features some pretty interesting ideas and a strong performance by Ethan Hawke. The film follows Finney and his sister Gwenny as The Grabber a unknown serial killer and kidnapper is roaming around grabbing their classmates when Finney gets napped. Hawke, playing the Grabber, brings a solid performance and I love the mask design but the film was incredibly predictable which takes away a lot of the tension. Most of the child performances are pretty terrible. I like the more supernatural elements involved with the film but that’s somewhat what made the film so predictable. Maybe if the film withheld some of the information rather than spoon feeding us everything it could have been utilized better. I did love the score throughout the film and a lot of the way Scott Derrickson stylized some of the visions and especially the intro credits. It’s definitely not a bad watch, just predictable and forgettable."

"The Man from Toronto is a solid action buddy comedy with both Hart and Harrelson having great chemistry together on screen. Hart plays his typical typecast bumbling likable idiot when he gets mixed up with Woody Harrelson who is an assassin for hire. Harrelson is definitely the standout performer here but what really surprised me was some of the punchlines landing and some of the action scenes were handled really well. Some, not so much, but the gym brawl scene was an easy standout and for the most part pretty impressive. Not a bad way to kill some time nursing a broken shoulder."

"Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is a hybrid animated live action film about a filmmaker staying at a Airbnb when he meets Marcel, a little shell with shoes. He begins to interview and film Marcel and he goes about his day and life after his family has went missing. The clips of Marcel went viral online which causes a change in Marcel’s life. Personally I thought this movie was super cute and adorable. The blended animation and live action looks great. I love Marcel’s design and the ingenuity of Marcel’s world is fascinating. I never really found the film to be gut bustingly funny but humorous and amusing throughout. It’s weird to think about getting attached to a shell with shoes, that it feels like a fully developed character but that’s exactly what happened here. Marcel is a great character and it’s fun watching him explain his world. There’s an emotional core and he and his nan are complex characters. This is one that could go up on a second watch and I’m down to watch this again."

"The Sea Beast follows a monster hunting pirate crew when a young girl stowaways on the ship when they confront a monster separating the girl and the captain to be after a fight to which they learn maybe there’s more to these monsters. I was honestly surprised at the more mature route this film took, it doesn’t feel like a kids movie. There’s consequences to actions and the film can present some heavier themes of politics, humanity and religion. I enjoyed a lot of the designs of the monsters and characters but there is something about the animation that feels dated. The plot plays out pretty cliched but at least most of the characters are well developed and dynamic for the most part. It’s a solid watch."

"I saw an advertisement for Tow on the sleep screen on my Roku and decided one late night to check it out on Tubi since it was a Tubi original. Growing up we had a saying called Sci-Fi original, a term used to define terrible low budget crappy sci-fi or horror films. The Sci-Fi channel had a reputation for producing some terrible schlocky originals. And thus the term. That term could easily fit here for Tow as this movie is a terrible introduction to me for a Tubi original. The film follows two sisters who survived a serial killer when they were kids and now as adults the killer faces the death penalty and tells them basically he will see them in their nightmares and the film proceeds to be a terrible version of Nightmare on Elm Street filled with bad acting, pacing, cinematography, special effects and all the other trappings that plague movies like this and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it."

"I’ve been hearing a lot about Incantation being so scary that you can’t finish it on TikTok and after watching the film, did ya’ll watch the same movie? Incantation is a found footage film presented almost like a documentary about a woman regaining custody of her child who maybe carrying a demonic curse. The film opens with some gruesome imagery that first made me think, “crap maybe TikTok was right.” Then the film continued and became very frustrating and boring. If you’re making a found footage film then the atmosphere that this is captured footage is what sells the illusion. When you have moments of a score set to scares it instantly breaks that illusion. There’s also a lot of “why are you filming this” or who is filming this that also shatters that facade. I found the strongest aspects being Hsuan-yen Tsai as the lead and for the most part the special effects looked good. However, there was not a single moments in the film outside of the intro that I found to be remotely scary or interesting. The film is bloated with scenes that are meant to be scary but thanks to added music of the child’s terrible performance just aren’t which leads to a town of down time. You can watch this one on Netflix but I found it to be extremely disappointing."

"Thor: Love & Thunder brings one of the better villains in the MCU with Gorr the God Butcher helmed by Christian Bale’s amazing performance that overshadows the entire cast and feels like a waste in this tonal mess of a film. This time around Thor is facing a god killer and a reunion with terminal ex Jane as you get whiplash from seriously dark tones to childish humor that feels like a devolution of Ragnarok. None of the humor landed for me but rather became a distracting annoyance as the film tries to also carry weight as gods are being slayed left and right and presenting emotional themes of love, grief and over coming loss. Love & Thunder also brings some of the worst CGI in the franchise that feels more like a Disney+ series rather than a full fledge MCU flagship, especially compared to the new Doctor Strange of Spider-Man. It’s a complete mess of a film that’s really held together by Bale’s Gorr."

"The Deer King is an animated film about a land ravaged with black wolf fever. A plague caused by getting bit by black wolfs. During the midst of this is a ruling nation with a plot to overthrow it when a man and a young girl, slaves in the salt mine, get attacked and survive the bites. The man begins to have a reaction, to kept from spoilers, from the bite. There’s honestly a lot going on here in terms of it’s world which ultimately doesn’t get fully explored and leaves you with some unsatisfying conclusions. The animation is beautiful, I love the nature setting and the film score fits it perfectly. The score reminded me of something like the score from Monster Hunter or akin and I loved it. I liked a lot of what the film presented but the story does fill unexplored which left the ending feeling really unsatisfying. There’s also some bad editing choices which was distracting. It’s still worth a watch if it sounds interesting to you."

"The Gray Man is decent. The Russo Brother’s newest film feels more like a Bond-light movie with underdeveloped characters and a weak emotional connect at the end that is held up by the action set pieces and Gosling and Evans carrying the film hard. While I think the story is rather cliched and predictable, there is some interesting action pieces. Not so much in the fight choreography but in the use of special effects or smoke. The fight scene in the fireworks pit is a standout for sure. There’s also some surprising moments where main characters get seriously hurt that you wouldn’t normally expect. To me, Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans hold the film up as both give great performances. There’s really not a bad performance here necessarily but they are definitely the stand outs. Musically the film is super generic thriller music that I don’t remember only a couple hours after watching the film but this definitely isn’t a bad way to kill a couple of hours, it just might not be a very rememberable couple of hours."

"Mrs. Harris goes to Paris isn’t a film I’d normally watch but it was nominated for a best Costume Design Oscar and it probably deserves it. The film is about Mrs. Harris going to Paris after her husband passes to by a dress from Dior. Mom if you’re watching this, you’d love this. As for me, this isn’t really my thing but the film is so whimsical and Lesley Manville who plays Mrs. Harris is so charming and charismatic and the film is so light hearted that it’s kinda hard not to get wrapped up into it. Isabelle Huppert shows up as kinda the villain of the film and she’s great, she basically doesn’t want Harris to have a Dior dress which can lead to some funny moments but also some moments of contention that works well as conflict. The film is pretty well shot as well but even though I’m not a dress or clothing kinda boy-o, I still see how great some of the wardrobe in the film is. This without a doubt is a perfect movie for someone like my mom and if it sounds interesting to you then definitely check it out."

"Paws of Fury while it started off feeling like a Kung Fu Panda clone quickly morphed into its own even if that’s not a good thing. Michael Cera is a terrible casting choice as the lead playing a dog in a cat society who becomes the new town’s samurai. Basically an evil lord wants to destroy the small town because it’s an eye sore from the castle and that’s pretty much it. The entire plot forces training moments, forced character growth and development and forcing chemistry for characters that isn’t there. The animation feel inconsistent as some moments it looks pretty great and at other looks blocky and lacking detail. The part that saves the film somewhat is its complete lack of care when it comes to rules, continuity or even it’s plot at points. The film is so willing to go off the rails, breaking 4th walls and defying it’s own structure to create some, possibly unintentional, funny moments. It’s definitely not the best but not the worst either."

Still though, this is a band from an artistic stand point that I very much respect and This Is Gwar does an amazing job of telling the band story and covering their history that made me respect the band even more. A group of misfit artists with a passion of B-Horror and Sci-Fi defying standards and rules to make such a unique and fun show all D.I.Y. Is nothing short of inspiring. The film carries you though the ups and downs of the band’s legacy in a well thought out presentation that both fans of the band and someone who knows nothing about the band and everyone in between can get something out of this. "Green Lantern Beware My Power is yet another disappointing entry into the DC animated line-up for the Green Boy. This time around John Stewart, a former marine, receives a ring that use to be Hal Jordans. From there he teams up with The Green Arrow and others to stop Sinestro. Honestly this is a pretty boring entry. The entire plot feels like something A.I. generated with no personality. There’s a plot twist that feels disrespectful to the character it happens to that felt completely unnecessary. The animation is on the same par as the rest of the DC animated line but I just keep wishing for something more with Green Lantern, something like First Flight again and this unfortunately isn’t it. This entry is just so generic and a big bowl of bland-o’s that I’ll completely forget about it in a week or two."

"DC League of Super-Pets is a fun and cute movie about Krypto, Superman’s dog trying to saving the Justice League after Lux Luthor’s Guinea Pig captures them and rains terror on Metropolis. The animation is decent but doesn’t look as good as some other 3d cgi animated films and personally I enjoy DC Warner bros 2d animation style better but it’s definitely not bad here. What was surprising was some of the humor actually landing and Kevin Hart delivers one of his better performances in his career as he doesn’t come across so Kevin Harty. The Rock is alright as Krypto but nothing noticeable. Krypto was written pretty much where also anybody could have played him and it not make much of a difference. Also what is surprising is the villain Guinea Pig. Lulu is actually a pretty solid villain who’s goals are clear and easy to understand her motives while also being a real threat and a challenge to over come on screen. Sure it’s predictable, not all the humor lands but I was definitely in the right mood for this one. "

"Thirteen Lives directed by Ron Howard is an Amazon Prime movie based on the real life event where a soccer team in Thailand get trapped in a cave system when a flash flood happens while they were exploring the cave. Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton play rescue divers trying to figure out a plan to get the team out safely. I knew nothing about the real life story but as a film Thirteen Lives is a pretty solid drama that has some real stakes even if at times it feels artificially played up. The leads give outstanding performances especially Farrell and Mortensen and I loved the setting of the film. Not sure if they film in a real cave system or built one but the sets looked great. The diving scenes can cause a sense of claustrophobia but I did find the underwater sound design to be irritating like nails on a chalkboard to me kind of thing. This isn’t a film that’s super rememberable but it does most of what it’s doing well and is worth a recommendation."

"Allegoria is the directorial debut of Spider One, the front man of Powerman 5000 or also know and Rob Zombie’s brother. The film is an anthology that’s not very good. Most anthologies bring together multiple talents in director or writing with some kind of spinal column that ties everything together and that’s not the case here. The film feels more like an anthology because Spider didn’t have a feature length idea for a film. Segments bounce in varied quality as some look more professional shot with decent acting and others can look more amateur with bad acting. Most segments present the idea of losing one’s self to their own artistic merit but these shorts leave little horror in them until the last few seconds where most feel like they end the same way. The core idea to these shorts may be the same for each one but that alone didn’t help them to tie together for an anthology. They still felt like separate and apart from each other. Hopefully Spider One will have a better outing next time."

"Bodies Bodies Bodies was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a while as it blends humor and tension really well. The film follows a group of spoiled brats as they throw a hurricane party to drink and do a bunch of drugs while the hurricane is raging outside. Throughout the night one of them end up dead and they have to figure out who the murder is. Each character is well developed and each actor gives a pretty great performance. The film is really well shot, considering most of the movie the power is out and most light comes from flashlights or phone and it’s filmed to look like the light is actually from the source even if amplified a bit. There’s a lot of dialogue and line delivery that pokes fun a woke culture, privilege and conservative culture as well. The film does a great job at building it’s mystery to an hilarious end that I was not expecting. The phony relationships and backstabbing nature of the main characters leaves none of them to really get behind but it adds to the fun of watching them turn on each other trying to figure out who the killer is. This is the first thing Pete Davidson had been a part of to make me laugh."

"Prey is a much needed juice of energy into the Predator series as a serious entry. Following a Native Comanche girl Naru who wants to be a hunter when a Predator shows up to hunt. What was the most surprising here was just the setting itself and how the film played off that primitive vs technology angle all while also pulling back on the Predators technology. There’s a nice attention to detail there where it’s not as advanced as previous films. There’s a good amount of character here and both Amber Midthunder who plays Naru and Dakota Beavers who plays Taabe both great excellent performances. There’s plenty of gnarly gore even if it felt a little lacking for the money shots. My biggest hang up about the film would be the inconsistencies with the CGI. Some things look amazing but there’s some moments, especially with animals that looked really bad. Overall though, this is a much needed entry into the series and one of the best in the franchise."

"Samaritan follows a young boy Sam years after a vigilante named Samaritan and his brother Nemesis supposedly die. Sam believes Samaritan is still alive and suspects his neighbor played by Sylvester Stallone of being him. Honestly the premise to the story is good but is unfortunately weighed down with horrendous foreshadowing that spoilers the entire plot of the movie and the big twist at the end that you could see coming from 10,000 miles away. Most performances in the movie are bad especially from Javon Wanna Walton who plays Sam and Stallone felt like he was phoning it in the whole time as well. Action wise, there is some good moments but there’s also some embarrassing green screen moments where you can clearly see a green outline around characters and some really poor fire effects as well. The best part of the film for me was the villains who easily gave the best performances and had a fun story line despite it’s inconsistencies with the characters power levels."

Bland, boring and lacking anything sense that made the original special is exactly what Pinocchio is. The film carries none of the whimsy of a Robert Zemeckis film. Most of the animation looks rather bad or falls into that uncanny valley category. "Barbarian directed by The Whitest Kids You Know alumni Zach Cregger is about a woman booking an Air BnB when she shows up to find it’s been doubled book. After finding a secret basement in the house, everything goes off the rails in a direction that I wasn’t expecting. Filled with brutal and claustrophobic moments, Barbarian worked well as a horror film as I was genuinely tense through most of the movie. The idea to kind of break the movie into two sections was a brilliant choice as it kept the pacing going really well while allowing itself to build tension. My biggest issue just might be some of the terrible decisions some of the characters make. Like the film starts off with these characters making really rational decisions and then after a while they just start making some really dumb ones. It felt inconsistent for the characters. Performance wise everyone here does a great job and the film looks great with a good score. "Medieval is a story based on Jan Zizka when he and his men kidnap a princess as brothers fight for power. I want to say off the bat, that this film has some brutal moments and some really good makeup. There’s some scenes here that are really well done and I loved a lot of the underwater fight scenes. However, the way the story is structured makes the plot and love plot feel super underdeveloped. You don’t really explore these characters or Jan enough to really get interested in their characters and the political strife feels more like segways then potent story pieces. There’s also some really bad performances but some good ones as well. The cinematography is pretty standard but there’s some stabilized shots that look really wonky. "Kevin Smith has been in a bit of a rut with his recent films and while Clerks 3 started off that way, about 30 minutes in it shifts into some of his better work. The film brings back the gang with Randall suffering a heart attack inspired by Smith’s very own and has a new lease on life wanting to make a film about his life, which is pretty much Clerks from 94. All while Dante is dealing with grief of the passing of Becky. Now I will say you have to have seen the other Clerks films for this film to be effective. Not in the sense of this being a sequel with character history but because this film is a passionate love letter to Smith’s friends and a shared history of making his films with his friends. This without a doubt is very touching and emotional that got a reaction out of me during it’s climax. Yes the film is funny with a lot of old and unfortunately new Smith humor but it has a strong emotional core that works very well. There’s a scene recreating one of the scenes from Clerks 94 that I think might be one of the best scenes Smith has constructed. It definitely has it’s problems but is a great conclusion as a trilogy."

The story of American actress Marilyn Monroe, covering her love and professional lives.

"Let me start this off by saying I know little to nothing about Marilyn Monroe and have seen next to none of her films. I watched this primarily because I’ve enjoyed a handful of directors Andrew Dominik’s other films. The film follows Monroe’s life from childhood and Ana de Armas who plays adult Monore gives a solid performance throughout. I also thought Adrien Brody who shows up for a minute also was a standout. The rest however can be hit or miss depending on the scene with some really bad performances at the beginning especially the girl who played the kid Monore. I don’t know how truthful this is to her real life but I did find moments to be fascinating as a character piece and how a predatoral industry rips that person apart. How mental health can deteriorate and how abuse can ripple throughout the years. Visually this film has a strong visual style using black and white scenes, color scenes and changing aspect ratios to present different times and themes even if at time it feels inconsistent in purpose it still looked great through composition. Without a doubt though this is a hulking film that feels way extended compared to the information presented. Maybe trimmed down this would be higher."

"Pearl is the prequel, pseudo-sequel, to X from earlier 2022. This film being centered around the character Pearl’s decent into madness. I say pseudo-sequel because, while you definitely don’t need to watch X to understand this film, seeing X beforehand enriches the experience of Pearl. There’s a lot of subtle nods and thematic tone’s that echo X and compliments each other very nicely. Personally I enjoyed Pearl more due to it’s almost Wizard of Oz, I Love Lucy-esque presentation, that brought a lot of charm and personality to the film. Mia Goth who play’s Pearl gives an excellent performance helping to carry some of the downtime during the film. There’s a good amount of surrealism in it’s horror that feels deep, furthering the impact of the character’s actions. I loved the score as well but there was some awful audio clipping throughout a lot of the movie. Pretty much anytime someone raised their voice the audio clip and it became pretty annoying, taking away from some more dramatic scenes. There’s a lot to appreciate in it’s presentation including some great transitions that made the film a visual fest. It’s a pretty solid psycho killer movie that I’d definitely recommend."

"The Woman King follows the Agojie, a all female warrior army in the kingdom of Dahomey during the slave trade lead by Viola Davis’ character which she murders in this role. When Viola’s character’s past comes back to haunt her. Honestly there’s a ton of moving parts here and for the most part the film navigates it really well. There’s just one scene in particular that I thought was really dumb and I hated the forced love sub plot. However, this is without a performance movie because everyone was pretty great across the board. Another standout was the costume and makeup as both were constantly impressive. There’s some good action set pieces with some good choreography that feels a little disrespected in the cinematography and editing where the quick cuts can confuse the choreography."

"Don’t Worry Darling is a movie that I probably wouldn’t have watched if it wasn’t surrounded in such drama. Seriously look into some of the behind the scenes and press moments, it’s goofy. The film is basically about Alice, played by Florence Pugh, a 50s housewife living in this housing development company town when she starts having these surreal day dreams and a former friend beings to act strange. Turning her everyday life into something not what it seems. Honestly the film was building a decent mystery that was enough to keep me going through a rather boring plot filled with npc’s other than the main character. When the mystery finally reveals itself. It’s so stupid that it felt insulting for a payoff. The cinematography is fine, there’s some cool visuals at times. Pooh gives the best performance but that’s not to say the rest of the cast was that bad, they just didn’t have much to work with. I hated the score as it felt really misplaced and used as a crutch in certain scenes for its tension. Overall the main strong point, it’s mystery, fizzled out to a frustrating end."

"Going into Rob Zombie’s The Munsters I knew little to nothing about The Munsters. I’m going in as a Rob Zombie fan and The Munsters offers little fan fare. By no means is this a terrible film. Honestly this is one that if I watched this as a kid I’d probably would have loved it and grew ip with some Nostalgia googles for it. There’s some charm here to really like. Most of the sets, costumes and special effects are really fun and add to the cheesy motif. I loved it on a visual aspect using a super bright and colorful palette in it’s lightning design that feels very Zombie-esq and there’s some really fun camera movements and framing that’s very fitting for it’s atmosphere. The main cast give decent performances hamming it up but where the film lost me was it’s humor and lack of story. This feels like a prolonged first episode for something more. There’s not real conflict in the plot, conflicts that appear fizzle out and because of that the film drags to a random ending that makes the experience feel incomplete."

"Argentina, 1985 is a film about the new government in Argentina prosecuting the overthrown dictatorship for their crimes against humanity. Following the legal team and lead prosecutor as they build their case and the threats that come their way, the film never really lives up to the grandiose of the story or the wonderful performances. I do want to say that I think the film looks great. It's super sharp with a great color palette and the the court rooms just look great on film. However, this film has some bad shot composition and editing. Every bit of dialogue is basically shot reverse shot cutting each time a person starts talking. There's moments where it feels like it will cut to someone that isn't really relevant. There felt like there was no rules to their blocking as characters movement in the scene with how the film was shot doesn't have a naturalistic flow. If some of these elements where tightened up, this could have been a pretty solid courtroom thriller. "

"The Greatest Beer Run Ever just looked like a good time about a man on an impossible and stupid mission to deliver beer to his buddies serving in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. From the trailer it just looked like a good time and that's not what I really got here. Sure the first part of the film is that and it tries to carry, but the problem is, is that the film also wants to showcase the horrors of war, how America wasn't really the good guy and how war changes people. This is based on a true story that I know nothing about, but because the film carries this goofy tone into war, the tones clash in a bad way. Creating conflicting moments where neither carry across the dmz. Stretching this out to a little over two hours, you really start to feel bogged down by it. Zac Efron though does a pretty great job here and it's honestly one of his better performances but the film is brought down by a lack of direction to carry it's weight. There's some good material here that in the hands of someone like The Coen's or akin, it could have been great."

"Hocus Pocus isn’t something that I hold onto as a classic. It’s fine and I enjoyed it but I’ve seen it twice and that’s good enough for me. That’s pretty much my opinion on this sequel. Hocus Pocus 2 jumps to the modern day almost 30 years after the original a group of teenage practicing witches accidentally summoning the Sanderson Sisters back to wreak havoc. For one I actual found the humor to land more for me here than the original but I was never gut busting with laugher. Performance wise the Sisters are all fantastic while the rest of the cast is eh. This time around the special effects don’t look the best but are fun. I mean I feel like I’m grasping at brooms here. It’s fine, it’s a fine movie that left me feeling the same as the original, it’s a fine short burst of escapism that’s not going to linger long afterwards but by no means was not entertaining during."

"Smile is a movie that had a great marketing campaign that definitely peaked my interest in the film. The film follows Dr Rose Cotter after a patient kills herself in front of her while smiling the whole time. From there Dr Rose begins having hallucinations as an unexplained entity haunts her. Honestly this is basically just It Follows with less subtlety. Even though It Follows wasn’t that subtle. Honestly I just found most of the film to be pretty lame. The jump scares are predictable and so is the plot. The film doesn’t really do anything that isn’t derivative. Sure Sosie Bacon who plays Doc Rose gives a solid performance but A-Train gives one of the worst performances of the year. For the most part the threat gets old after a wild and doesn’t really do anything cool until the end where there’s one scene that was pretty interesting. Smile though just felt like a film that other films have done better on almost every aspect. It’s one of those films that in a couple of months I will completely forget I ever watched it."

"Vesper is a bio-sci-fi film about a dystopian future where the ruling oligarchs live in prosperity and control the food chain for those living on the fringe in order to get youthful blood from them. It’s a film that conceptually presents a fascinating world that’s filled with interesting struggles, politics and flora. The film follows Vesper, a young girl with her sick father who follows her around in a droid as she tries to crack the code that makes the seeds to grow plants a one time use. This film is shot beautifully and has some amazing effects even if there’s moments where the effects don’t land. My biggest issue is the fact you present a lot on a conceptual level but the story is rather small scale and those concepts don’t really get explored. When they did it’s great though. The cinematography is great and I the performances are solid. This is a pretty interesting indie sci-fi that could go up on a second viewing because the setting is so fascinating."

"Deadstream is one that was recommended by a friend and after watching it, I had a blast. The film is about a YouTuber/Streamer/Influence who did something to get canceled and so he plans a redemption stream at a haunted house. The whole thing is shot to look like a YouTube video and Live Stream and it feels very authentic in it’s presentation. Footage looks like the cameras it was shot on, for the most part everything fit within it’s own rules and Joseph Winter who plays the main character Shawn and is also one of the co-directors and writers does an amazing job in the lead. This is a horror comedy that strives at both in the same vein as Evil Dead. It’s a fun little film that could go up on a second viewing but I’d definitely recommend checking this one out."

"I finally watched Terrifier 2 and it wasn’t as grotesque or disturbing as I thought it would be. The film picks up right after the first and then jumps a year as we fellow Sienna and her little brother Little Punk People as they get ready for Halloween. Personally I think the film is definitely a step up from the first. The cinematography is better and doesn’t look as Instagram filtery but has a constant grading. The acting is much better besides some and personally I really loved the score. This without a doubt has some amazing gore effects. Almost all of it is practical and the film can come off a bit like a gore demo. This though, to me, is much more of a popcorn gore flick rather than ultra disturbing. I personally hated the ending of the film and why does every adult have to be an a**hole to an unbelievable extent especially the mother. Still this is a fun gore flick that improves on the first."

October 7, 2022 2/10

"Tell It Like A Woman might be one of the worst movies nominated for an Oscar, sure it's only for best original song but still this movie is garbage. The film is an anthology of what is suppose to be women empowering tales but instead that come off very artificial and in times somewhat misogynistic. There's literally a story where one of the women is helping a homeless person and then precedes to bad mouth her after words and then it cuts to the real person, talking about how great she is like she didn't just call that woman a stinky stinker. Just how indigenous the film is, is insulting to say the least. As of the Oscar nominated song, it's meh. There's really only one section of the film that was decent as a short and that was the Asian single parent, the rest were terrible and inconsistent with their pacing which felt like it was a jumbled, slapped together anthology rather than one with purpose."

"The new Hulu David Bruckner Hellraiser reboot is in my opinion super boring. The film follows Riley, an ex junkie living with her brother when her and her fling rob a warehouse and she finds the cenobites puzzle box. After a fight with her brother she relapses and accidentally opens the box kinda but regardless without spoilers the cenobites take her brother and thus the story continues to solve this problem. Personally, I find Bruckner’s directorial style to be, competent but ultimately bland and boring with Hellraiser being my least favorite by far. The acting was hit or miss with Adam Faison who played Cole giving one of the worst performances of the year. I also hated the costumes as many felt fake compared to what they’re trying to sell and the gorey set pieces were underwhelming. The plot was predictable and nothing was scary, disturbing or emotional for me which lead to a drawn out film that left me underwhelmed and bored."

"Triangle of Sadness is the newest Ruben Östlund film about a couple going on a cruise ship with some of aristocrats when the cruise goes south fast. Honestly my biggest issue with the film was just how disjointed the story was and how under developed a lot of characters are. The first two acts on the ship I found to be pretty enjoyable but the third act completely lost me as I found the situation the characters were in, mixed with the cast to be not as interesting as the first two acts. The film spends about half of the film bouncing around to different characters that left us with some fun interacts between the cast but that back end takes away some of the more interesting characters and from there the film, to me, felt like it could never get it's footing. The film does have some great performances and it's shot very well but some of the cg is pretty noticeable besides the grossest scene in the movie."

"I just watched Grimcutty on Hulu and it was hilarious. The film follows Asha played by Sara Wolfkind who was easily the best performance and her over controlling parents worrying about her obsession with Social Media when the new Grimcutty challenge becomes trending. The challenge is to basically look at a dumb picture of Grimcutty and he will make the teens hurt themselves and oh boy is that creature a thing. It’s hilarious every-time it moves. I give props for mostly doing Grimcutty as an actual prop but the way it moves and how cheap it looks makes me laugh every-time it’s on screen. The film also ham-fists messages about parents not understanding social media and how kids are obsessed with it. From the bad acting to terrible effects to stupid character decisions and wonky camera work this was a fun time for all the wrong reasons."

"Piggy is a film about an overweight girl who is severely bullied when a killer shows up in town and she witnesses something she isn’t suppose to. Honestly this was a pretty solid film that had a real emotional core for the lead character and her family dynamic. Laura Galán does an amazing job in the lead. The film is shot well and I liked the look of the lens to have a somewhat distorted edge look to it. I do wish there was some stronger horror elements to the film, this is more of a drama and there’s not really a lot of tension in the film. Some moments towards the end fell a little flat. But there’s a lot of great dramatic moments that do make up for some of the other areas."

"Old Man has moments where it’s goofy bad but for majority of the film, it’s just bad. The film is basically about Stephen Lang’s character, an Old Man living in a remote cabin in the woods when a stranger appears on his front door. The two talk for the rest of the movie as it never successfully builds tension or makes you guess who bad the guy is. Stephen Lang is trying here but some of the dialogue so is dumb and ludicrous that it’s impossible to take seriously. Marc Senter gives one of the worst performances I’ve seen in a long time as I didn’t believe anything. There’s also this really weird looking green screen scene that has way off perspectives. There’s also a twist that, for me, made the first half of the film basically not work anymore, it was super frustrating. There is a few moments of interesting ideas on how to present some of Lang’s characters story telling but besides that and a few funny moments or unintentionally funny dialogue, it’s a slog to get through."
