When the Star Wars prequels were released, I was in junior high, and I remember having the most sincere crush on Padme. 'Black Swan' may have done that in, but Natalie Portman is still a fine actress.

2. Emilia Clarke

Actress | Game of Thrones

British actress Emilia Clarke was born in London and grew up in Oxfordshire, England. Her father was a theatre sound engineer and her mother is a businesswoman. Her father was working on a theatre production of "Show Boat" and her mother took her along to the performance. This is when, at the age ...

In my opinion, no one else could have played Daenarys Targaryen.

3. Olga Kurylenko

Actress | Oblivion

Olga Kurylenko is a Ukrainian-French actress and model, went from sharing a cramped flat with her aunt, uncle, grandparents and cousin to starring as a Bond girl opposite Daniel Craig.

She was quite good in 'Oblivion' and 'Quantum of Solace.'

4. Gal Gadot

Actress | Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot is an Israeli actress and model. She was born in Petah Tikva, Israel, to an Ashkenazi Jewish family (from Poland, Austria, Germany, and Czechoslovakia who Hebraized their name from 'Greenstein' to sound less European). She served in the IDF for two years, and won the Miss Israel title in ...

Put simply, she is 'Wonder Woman' now.

5. Evangeline Lilly

Actress | The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Evangeline Lilly, born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, in 1979, was discovered on the streets of Kelowna, British Columbia, by the famous Ford modeling agency. Although she initially decided to pass on a modeling career, she went ahead and signed with Ford anyway, to help pay for her University of ...

Her playing Kate in LOST was enough, but Evangeline Lilly was great in Ant-Man too. I also really appreciate the public comments she made in support of the Canadian truckers' protest when making those comments put her career in great peril. That took real-life courage, and she will always have been right to back them in my mind.

6. Rosamund Pike

Actress | Gone Girl

Born in 1979 in London, England, actress Rosamund Mary Elizabeth Pike is the only child of a classical violinist mother, Caroline (Friend), and an opera singer father, Julian Pike. She played Jane to perfection in 'Pride and Prejudice' in 2005.

7. Liv Tyler

Liv Tyler is an actress of international renown and has been a familiar face on our screens for over two decades and counting. She began modelling at the age of fourteen before pursuing a career in acting. After making her film debut in Bruce Beresford's Silent Fall, she was cast by fledgling ...

Besides crushing on 'Padme' in Star Wars Episodes I-III, starting in junior high, I distinctly remember also falling for Arwen in 'The Lord of the Rings' in high school. She was also a fine Betty Ross in 'The Incredible Hulk,' opposite Edward Norton.

8. Vivien Leigh

Actress | A Streetcar Named Desire

If a film were made of the life of Vivien Leigh, it would open in India just before World War I, where a successful British businessman could live like a prince. In the mountains above Calcutta, a little princess is born. Because of the outbreak of World War I, she is six years old the first time ...

'Gone With the Wind' would not have been the same without her.

9. Catherine Zeta-Jones

'The Mask of Zorro.' Need I say more?

She originally pursued a career in the legal profession. While attending the University of Perugia, she modeled on the side to ...

Though it wasn't one, to the extent ' The Matrix Reloaded' might be considered a decent follow-up to the first 'Matrix' film, the Merovingian and Bellucci as Persephone deserve a lot of credit for adding fresh sophistication and gravity that gave the audience more than just a stale remix of the first film.

13. Jennifer Lawrence

Actress | The Hunger Games

As the highest-paid actress in the world in 2015 and 2016, and with her films grossing over $5.5 billion worldwide, Jennifer Lawrence is often cited as the most successful actress of her generation. She is also the first person born in the 1990s to have won an acting Oscar.

Jennifer Shrader Lawrence...

'The Hunger Games' and 'X-Men: First Class' showcased an actress with a range that combined a clumsy, self-deprecating sense of humor with a capacity to be serious and focused as well. Jennifer Lawrence is beautiful, but also seems to be a real person in a fuller sense than is common. That is refreshing to see, and makes a film more enjoyable to watch for being present by her inclusion in it.

14. Eleanor Tomlinson

Actress | Jack the Giant Slayer

Eleanor May Tomlinson was born on the 19th of May 1992 on London, Greater London, England. She moved to Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, as a small child, and attended Beverley High School as a teenager.

She is an English actress who was best known for her TV roles as Isabelle in Jack ...

After starting off with so much promise, I don't at all like the direction 'Poldark' ultimately went; it would have been far better to present a vision of faithfulness in marriage. That said, there's no doubt that Eleanor Tomlinson played Demelza well, and was highly enjoyable to watch in that role. She also made 'Jack the Giant Slayer' a better film for being in it.

15. Emily Blunt

Actress | Edge of Tomorrow

Emily Olivia Leah Blunt is a British actress known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), The Young Victoria (2009), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and The Girl on the Train (2016), among many others.

Blunt was born on February 23, 1983, in Roehampton, South West London, England, the second of ...

Typically, I don't care at all for the trend in recent decades to present leading female characters as ultra-competent, ultra-deadly warriors. However, 'Live, Die, Repeat' was great science fiction with a great concept and execution. Emily Blunt playing an even remotely believable female soldier in it the way that she did helped tremendously to that end.

16. Felicity Jones

Actress | Rogue One

Felicity Rose Hadley Jones is an English actress and producer. Jones started her professional acting career as a child, appearing at age 12 in The Treasure Seekers (1996). She went on to play Ethel Hallow for one series in the television show The Worst Witch and its sequel Weirdsister College. ...

Much of the success and enjoyability of 'Rogue One' - by far, the best Star Wars film to come out since the originals, and a fine movie in its own right, even if you're not a fan of the franchise - should be attributed to the beauty and talent of the actress who played 'Jyn Erso.'

17. Bryce Dallas Howard

Actress | Jurassic World Dominion

Bryce Dallas Howard was born on March 2, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. She was conceived in Dallas, Texas (the reason for her middle name). 'The Village' is one of my favorite films, and it would not at all have been the same with anyone but Bryce Dallas Howard playing in the lead role. Besides that, her episode of 'Black Mirror' taking a dystopic look at social credit scores is legendary.

18. Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca Ferguson was born Rebecca Louisa Ferguson Sundström in Stockholm, Sweden, and grew up in its Vasastaden district. Her father is Swedish. Her mother, Rosemary Ferguson, is British, of Scottish and Northern Irish descent, and moved to Sweden at the age of 25. Rebecca attended an ...

In both 'Mission Impossible' and the latest 'Dune' films, she almost always looks like she's weighing and measuring the next move to make, and how best to make it. If she has another mode, it is looking determined to make the next move as well as it can be made.

19. Hayley Atwell

Actress | Captain America: The First Avenger

Born in London, England, Hayley Elizabeth Atwell has dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and the United States. An only child, Hayley was named after actress Hayley Mills. Her parents, Alison (Cain) and Grant Atwell, both motivational speakers, met at a London workshop of Dale Carnegie's ...

She was Peggy Carter, and did a fine job playing a master thief in Mission Impossible. When she is on the screen, the expectation is that someone is about to be scolded, and rightly so.

20. Donna Reed

Actress | It's a Wonderful Life

Donna Reed was born in the midwestern town of Denison, Iowa, on January 27, 1921, as Donna Belle Mullenger. A small town - a population of less than 3,000 people - Denison was located by the Boyer River, and was the county seat of Crawford County. Donna grew up as a farm girl, much like many young ...

"George Bailey, I'll love you 'til the day I die" and "This is what I wished for" pretty well sum up Donna Reed's performance in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' where she brought such a charming, gentle, sweet, feminine grace to the role of Mary.

21. Beulah Bondi

Actress | It's a Wonderful Life

Character actress Beulah Bondi was a favorite of directors and audiences and is one of the reasons so many films from the 1930s and 1940s remain so enjoyable, as she was an integral part of many of the ensemble casts (a hallmark of the studio system) of major and/or great films, including The Trail...

For starters, she was George Bailey's mother in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' and Jeremiah's grandmother in 'So Dear to My Heart.' In both films, she could be the tenderest one moment and the sternest the next, alternating from one mode to the next with the utmost believability and grace.

22. Julie Andrews

Actress | The Sound of Music

Julia Elizabeth Wells was born on October 1, 1935, in England. Her mother, Barbara Ward (Morris), and stepfather, both vaudeville performers, discovered her freakish but undeniably lovely four-octave singing voice and immediately got her a singing career. She performed in music halls throughout her...

I grew up watching 'The Sound of Music' and 'Mary Poppins,' and can't even count how many times I've seen those films; the voice, mannerisms, and charm of Julie Andrews made those films what they are.

23. Robin Wright

Actress | Forrest Gump

Robin Gayle Wright was born in Dallas, Texas, to Gayle (Gaston), a national director at Mary Kay, and Freddie Wright, a pharmaceutical executive. She grew up in San Diego, California. She started her professional career as a model in 1980 at age 14, and worked both in Paris and Japan. After ...

Her performance in 'The Northman' was visceral, primal, and unforgettable.

27. Jill Haworth

Actress | Exodus

A slim, stunning, stylish-looking actress, British Jill Haworth (born Valerie Jill Haworth on August 15, 1945 in Sussex) was a free-spirited product of the 1960s. Her father was a textile magnate and sometime race car driver and mother an aspiring ballerina. Trained in dance herself, she attended ...

'Exodus' would not have been the same at all without her counter-balancing of Paul Newman in particular, to show the vulnerability and courage of women in such circumstances as the birth of the modern nation of Israel.

28. Diane Lane

Actress | Unfaithful

Diane Lane was born on January 22, 1965, in New York. She is the daughter of acting coach Burton Eugene "Burt" Lane and nightclub singer/centerfold Colleen Farrington. Helen Mirren brings a straight-forward and direct elegance to every role I've seen her play. She is to the point, but as dignified as she is blunt.

Australian actress Emily Browning was born in 1988 in Melbourne, Australia, to Shelley and Andrew Browning. She has two younger brothers. In a word, 'Suckerpunch.'

'The Mummy' and 'Enemy At the Gates' would not have been the same movies at all without the particular vulnerability she brought to her roles in them.

35. Charlize Theron

Producer | Monster

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a city in the greater Johannesburg area, in South Africa, the only child of Gerda Theron (née Maritz) and Charles Theron. She was raised on a farm outside the city. Theron is of Afrikaner (Dutch, with some French Huguenot and German) descent, and Afrikaner ...

Charlize Theron is one of the few actresses today who is believable when she plays tough roles. That is, she actually comes across as intimidating and dangerous in a weighty, substantive, self-possessed way, rather than in a wild, insecure, unpredictable, or "me thinks the lady doth protest too much" sort of way.

36. Judi Dench

Actress | Skyfall

Dame Judi Dench was born Judith Olivia Dench in York, England, to Eleanora Olive (Jones), who was from Dublin, Ireland, and Reginald Arthur Dench, a doctor from Dorset, England. She attended Mount School in York, and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She has performed with the ...

Put simply, Judi Dench makes films more important when she is in them. Her dialogue adds credibility to the plot, and not just for what she says. How she says what she does, in measured tones, never in a hurry, always with dignity - she lends the same quality to whatever film she's in that David Attenborough brings to nature documentaries.
