40 Metascore

Director: James Wan | Stars: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, Lin Shaye

Votes: 188,832 | Gross: $83.59M

Sucked compared to the first one--too many jump scares and plot holes. The pacing suggests it was made for people with very low attention spans.

2. As Above, So Below (2014)

39 Metascore

When a team of explorers venture into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead.

Director: John Erick Dowdle | Stars: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, François Civil

Votes: 111,844 | Gross: $21.20M

Not scary, movies like this are why found footage style films get a bad rep even if they don't deserve it as a genre.

3. The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)

84 Metascore

A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.

Director: Robert Eggers | Stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Julian Richings

Votes: 301,041 | Gross: $25.14M

There never was a Witch in this movie, at least it's never made clear if there is. Ambiguity isn't necessarily a bad thing in movies, but if you're movie is called "The Witch".....it should have a witch.

4. Split (IX) (2016)

PG-13 | 117 min | Horror, Thriller

63 Metascore

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Jessica Sula

Votes: 554,137 | Gross: $138.29M

Not only is this movie's depiction of split-personality disorder highly inaccurate, but it's just not scary.

5. A Quiet Place (2018)

82 Metascore

A family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.

Director: John Krasinski | Stars: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Votes: 583,764 | Gross: $188.02M

HUGE plot holes, characters often act in a way that doesn't make sense.

78 Metascore

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

Director: Trey Edward Shults | Stars: Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, Riley Keough

Votes: 103,130 | Gross: $13.99M

The movie ends right when it starts to get interesting. BTW, you never find out what "It" is.

7. Sinister (I) (2012)

R | 110 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

53 Metascore

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson

Votes: 280,292 | Gross: $48.09M

Other than the grainy footage Ethan Hawke watches, not a whole lot of memorable stuff here. The plot falls apart towards the end.

8. Evil Dead (2013)

R | 91 min | Horror

57 Metascore

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

Director: Fede Alvarez | Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci

Votes: 197,314 | Gross: $54.24M

Doesn't build tension properly, since the plot moves way too fast. It's not a "fun" horror movie like the movies it's based on, it takes itself wayyyy too seriously. Doesn't do the originals justice by far.

9. It Chapter Two (2019)

58 Metascore

Twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back.

Director: Andy Muschietti | Stars: Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa

Votes: 302,123 | Gross: $211.59M

What the hell happened here? Part one was good. Part two tries to mix in comedic elements to poor effect.

68 Metascore

Director: Mike Flanagan | Stars: Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Annabeth Gish

Votes: 51,769

Laughable special effects ruin what might have been an alright movie otherwise. Normally I will let this kind of nitpick slide but not in this case. You'd have to watch it to see what I mean.

On Halloween night, Tara Heyes finds herself as the obsession of a sadistic murderer known as Art the Clown.

It's just about the least original slasher ever.

Director: William Brent Bell | Stars: Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans, James Russell, Jim Norton

Votes: 101,866 | Gross: $35.82M

It's just a guy hiding in the house. It's not a doll at all. It's stupid.

14. Under the Shadow (2016)

PG-13 | 84 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

83 Metascore

As a mother and daughter struggle to cope with the terrors of the post-revolution, war-torn Tehran of the 1980s, a mysterious evil begins to haunt their home.

Better than As Above, So Below but still weak as far as found footage movies go.
