Favorite Films Of All-Time

by nestor-trujillo | created - 23 Aug 2014 | updated - 20 Mar 2018 | Public

The list of films that have affected me and shaped me as a filmmaker since I first discovered my love for filmmaking at the age of 14. These are more than just movies to me but pieces of my identity that to this day make me who I am both as a person and as an artist.

1. Hunger (2008)

Not Rated | 96 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

82 Metascore

Irish republican Bobby Sands leads the inmates of a Northern Irish prison in a hunger strike.

Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Michael Fassbender, Liam Cunningham, Stuart Graham, Laine Megaw

Votes: 73,552 | Gross: $0.15M

My introduction to Steve McQueen and what an introduction it was! Hunger won me over with its painterly beauty and Warhol-esque long and seemingly inconsequential takes and still holds up to me as one of the most beautiful films of all time.

2. La haine (1995)

Not Rated | 98 min | Crime, Drama

24 hours in the lives of three young men in the French suburbs the day after a violent riot.

Director: Mathieu Kassovitz | Stars: Vincent Cassel, Hubert Koundé, Saïd Taghmaoui, Abdel Ahmed Ghili

Votes: 196,464 | Gross: $0.31M

This was a film I should have seen when I was younger and angrier at the world around me. This and Moonlight showed me that the films I wanted to make could indeed be made and appreciated without appearing boring or meaningless. And for all its simplicity, La Haine is incredibly well-shot, endlessly watchable, and totally visceral. I could only WISH to make a film like this some day!

3. The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)

R | 140 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

68 Metascore

Two men and their sons must deal with the unforeseen consequences of their actions.

Director: Derek Cianfrance | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Craig Van Hook

Votes: 290,374 | Gross: $21.38M

One of the single most ambitious films I have ever watched. I don't care what anyone else has to say about this it is a flawless film that flows like a literary work and perfectly encapsulates its themes of fatherhood in a way that is so goddamn emotional and heartbreaking. Also, it was here that I learned that the best way to go into a film is not knowing anything about it.

4. Magnolia (1999)

R | 188 min | Drama

78 Metascore

An epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 328,500 | Gross: $22.46M

I still can't believe this was WRITTEN and DIRECTED by PTA before he hit 30. A true masterpiece by a true prodigy. The way PTA weaves these complex stories and characters together so masterfully, in my eyes, has never been replicated so perfectly by anyone else in film history ever (except maybe Iñárritu).

5. The Hunt (2012)

R | 115 min | Drama

77 Metascore

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm

Votes: 364,392 | Gross: $0.69M

'Jagten' was, for me, the threshold into foreign cinema as it should be for all film lovers out there. Though it wasn't my first foreign movie it was indeed the first to win over my heart and soul so deeply. The Hunt is truly perfect and it's story is so wholly unique and daring, which proved to a young me that American cinema wasn't the pinnacle of artistry (I mean look at its lackluster American counterpart, 'The Woodsman').

6. Irreversible (2002)

Not Rated | 97 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

51 Metascore

Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.

Director: Gaspar Noé | Stars: Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel, Albert Dupontel, Philippe Nahon

Votes: 147,657 | Gross: $0.75M

Before watching Irreversible I thought I had immersed myself deeply enough in the world of film that nothing could surprise me... this film completely shattered my expectations. Not only was it the film's controversial centerpiece, which was the hardest viewing experience I've ever had (coming from someone who wasn't particularly shocked by a movie like Salo), but Irreversible's soundtrack and cinematography are probably one of the strangest and most unique to ever be seen on screen. Also the premise and the story is deceptively simple yet open to so much interpretation... It is truly a masterpiece.

7. Elephant (2003)

R | 81 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

70 Metascore

Several ordinary high school students go through their daily routine as two others prepare for something more malevolent.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Elias McConnell, Alex Frost, Eric Deulen, John Robinson

Votes: 97,248 | Gross: $1.23M

One of the boldest films I have ever seen in my life while also being perhaps the most respectful and well-handled depiction of a school shooting in a film ever. Unlike most movies, no one can accuse Elephant of manipulation, of heavy-handedness, of exploitation... there's something about it that is so pure and honest that it welcomes an analysis and understanding of violence that couldn't even be matched by the directness of a documentary. Not only so, but for all its minimalism it is surprisingly stylish and even a bit complex. Another masterpiece from Gus Van Sant.

8. Good Will Hunting (1997)

R | 126 min | Drama, Romance

71 Metascore

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 1,068,072 | Gross: $138.43M

It's impossible not to like a movie with such charisma hitting you at every second. The story of Will Hunting is one that is deeply personal to me and one of the reasons I look up to it so much is its naturalistic aesthetic beauty courtesy of Van Sant and the fact that two young, up and coming guys like Affleck and Damon were able to write such a compelling story. (Also the last movie I ever re-watched 8 times non-stop).

9. American Beauty (1999)

R | 122 min | Drama

84 Metascore

A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley

Votes: 1,211,012 | Gross: $130.10M

One of the first films to both show me the horrors of a family falling apart and the beauty of living all in one sitting. This remains one of the most heart-breaking and touching films I have ever seen to date.

10. No Country for Old Men (2007)

R | 122 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

92 Metascore

Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong and over two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson

Votes: 1,060,268 | Gross: $74.28M

First time I ever a film with no music. A film where the villain wins. And a film with such starkly beautiful and daring cinematography. Also, Anton Chigurh remains one of the greatest movie villains of all-time. Nuff' said.

11. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

R | 102 min | Drama

71 Metascore

The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans

Votes: 898,793 | Gross: $3.64M

A heart-wrenching story of drug addiction that hasn't been handled with such nuance or beauty before or since. Maybe I saw this when I was too young but I think it was a great example of youthful, ambitious filmmaking. I mean where else have you seen graphic subject matter, overexposure, split screen, montage, time lapse and snorricam all in one film before?

12. The Tree of Life (2011)

PG-13 | 139 min | Drama, Fantasy

85 Metascore

The story of a family in Waco, Texas in 1956. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence and struggles with his parents' conflicting teachings.

Director: Terrence Malick | Stars: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken

Votes: 184,129 | Gross: $13.30M

Could philosophy and cinema ever go together? I had never even thought of such a possibility until I saw Tree of Life. It is beautiful, perfect, and always hits me with such great emotional pain because I realize that Malick, for all his reclusiveness, bares his past, his feelings and his soul for all to see and that's why I'm able to relate to it on such a genuine and personal level.

13. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

R | 119 min | Comedy, Drama

87 Metascore

A washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.

Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu | Stars: Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough

Votes: 666,569 | Gross: $42.34M

Birdman is a rollercoaster reserved for true cinephiles. As the film progressed, I got more and more anxious: wait, has this shot still been going?? Is it going to cut?? Is it....?? When I realized it was all made to appear like one single take instantly fell in love but, beyond what could be perceived as a gimmick, Birdman is able to hold up because of its story, characters, themes and, of course, fantastically unique musical score.

14. The Wrestler (2008)

R | 109 min | Drama, Sport

80 Metascore

A faded professional wrestler must retire, but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle.

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Mark Margolis

Votes: 319,948 | Gross: $26.24M

I first watched The Wrestler immediately after my first break-up and I'll never regret it or forget it. A gritty, depressing but ultimately sympathetic masterpiece that helped me face my own sadness. It made me realize that the best films don't help you escape but help you confront something about yourself and I will always stand by that.

15. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

R | 134 min | Drama, Romance

87 Metascore

Ennis and Jack are two shepherds who develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Their relationship becomes complicated when both of them get married to their respective girlfriends.

Director: Ang Lee | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Randy Quaid

Votes: 382,218 | Gross: $83.04M

First LGBT movie I ever watched back when I was still very young and had naive notions about homosexuality. When I watched it I realized it was the best romantic drama I had ever seen (and that spoke volumes to me) and have ever seen since. Brokeback Mountain helped me become more socially aware and I think that speaks for the power of film and its politics in shaping minds for the better.

16. Prisoners (2013)

R | 153 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

70 Metascore

When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.

Votes: 529,425 | Gross: $35.55M

21. The Graduate (1967)

PG | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

83 Metascore

A disillusioned college graduate finds himself torn between his older lover and her daughter.

Director: Mike Nichols | Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels

Votes: 288,425 | Gross: $104.95M

I went into this expecting a 7 and I got a 10 out of 10. Holy *beep* This is hands down one of the best coming-of-age films of all-time, better than any Edge of Seventeen/Breakfast Club *beep* people admire so much. It's so great because its not about angst but about purpose, and isn't heavy-handed with its themes at the expense of the story, which is just so goddamn funny and entertaining even now.

22. Che: Part Two (2008)

Not Rated | 135 min | Biography, Drama, History

64 Metascore

In 1967, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara leads a small partisan army to fight an ill-fated revolutionary guerrilla war in Bolivia, South America.

Director: Steven Soderbergh | Stars: Demián Bichir, Rodrigo Santoro, Benicio Del Toro, Catalina Sandino Moreno

Votes: 35,051

This one is no where near as good as the first film but that may have just been a product of the dreary gray scale and the depressing monotony that is the dissolution of the guerrillas. However, it's still a wonderful portrait showing the fall of a revolutionary and well worth seeing if just for his execution scene: "Shoot. Do it." *beep* great!
