Some obvious choices here...some a bit obsucre

1. Meryl Streep

Actress | Out of Africa

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

Her ability to add powerful nuance to her scenes is unique. Her scene in "The Post" the one where she was on the phone deciding whether or not to publish "The Pentagon Papers" is emblematic of her skill. She takes you right along with her character's indecision in that powerful scene, her best of the movie.

2. Tom Hanks

Producer | Cast Away

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn (Frager), a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks, an itinerant cook. His mother's family, originally surnamed "Fraga", was entirely Portuguese, while his father was of mostly English ancestry. Tom grew up in what he has ...

He will always be "Captain Miller" in my mind. The greatest War movie in my opinion. Spielberg is a genius. I'm quite sure he's tired of hearing that. lol

3. Rosamund Pike

Actress | Gone Girl

Born in 1979 in London, England, actress Rosamund Mary Elizabeth Pike is the only child of a classical violinist mother, Caroline (Friend), and an opera singer father, Julian Pike. Something about her eyes captivates me. I can't stop looking at her when she's on screen.

4. Ryan Reynolds

Actor | Deadpool 2

Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 23, 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the youngest of four children. His father, James Chester Reynolds, was a food wholesaler, and his mother, Tamara Lee "Tammy" (Stewart), worked as a retail-store saleswoman. He has Irish and Scottish ancestry. ...

Versatile and so very irreverently funny. No sacred cows for him when he makes his quips. A very likable public persona. He strikes me as truly humble, not just pretending to be so.

5. Chris Pine

Actor | Star Trek

Chris Pine was born in Los Angeles. His parents are actors Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford, and his maternal grandparents were Max M. Gilford, a president of the Hollywood Bar Association, and actress Anne Gwynne. His sister, Katherine Pine, has also acted. Chris's ancestry is Russian Jewish (from ...

I really discovered this guy in the Star Trek movie of 2009. Actually, they really nailed the casting on this entire movie. A film of his you must see is "Hell or High Water" with the wonderful Ben Foster & Jeff Bridges, who both appear elsewhere on this list.

6. Jeff Bridges

Actor | The Big Lebowski

Jeffrey Leon Bridges was born on December 4, 1949 in Los Angeles, California, the son of well-known film and TV star Lloyd Bridges and his long-time wife Dorothy Dean Bridges (née Simpson). He grew up amid the happening Hollywood scene with big brother Beau Bridges. Both boys popped up, without ...

Who else could have done justice to the Original "True Grit" and to The Duke? His screen presence is powerful. If you want to really know why the dialogue is so memorable in either of these film versions of "True Grit", you MUST read the book the movie was based upon. Read the Charles Portis novel of the same title. You won't regret it.

7. Ben Foster

Actor | Hell or High Water

Ben Foster was born October 29, 1980 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Gillian Kirwan and Steven Foster, restaurant owners. His younger brother is actor Jon Foster. His paternal grandparents were from Russian Jewish families that immigrated to Massachusetts (his grandfather became a prominent judge in ...

One of those "Chameleon" type actors. A truly gifted character/supporting actor. I can't put my finger on why he has not broken it huge as a leading man. I'll watch anything he's in. Why the man did not get an Oscar Nomination for his role in "Hell or High Water" is beyond me.

8. Denzel Washington

Actor | Fences

Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York. He is the middle of three children of a beautician mother, Lennis, from Georgia, and a Pentecostal minister father, Denzel Washington, Sr., from Virginia. After graduating from high school, Denzel enrolled at ...

I really grew to appreciate his style when I saw, "The Book of Eli" He has such an easy and natural style about himself whether he's playing a lover or a killer and does so often in the same film.

9. Jodie Foster

Actress | The Silence of the Lambs

Jodie Foster started her career at the age of two. For four years she made commercials and finally gave her debut as an actress in the TV series Mayberry R.F.D. (1968). In 1975 Jodie was offered the role of prostitute Iris Steensma in the movie Taxi Driver (1976). This role, for which she received ...

So talented that she makes it look easy. It's been her life. She is so lucky to have found her place in life at such an early age. So many child stars have deteriorated with the brutal onslaught of early fame. She must be a very level headed person and a true pro at her craft.

10. Helen Mirren

Actress | The Queen

Dame Helen Mirren was born in Queen Charlotte's Hospital in West London. Her mother, Kathleen Alexandrina Eva Matilda (Rogers), was from a working-class English family, and her father, Vasiliy Petrovich Mironov, was a Russian-born civil servant, from Kuryanovo, whose own father was a diplomat. ...

What a true talent. I hesitate to admit I don't know much of her early career, but it seems she has classical experience and training. I just loved her performance in "The Hundred Foot Journey" A simply heartwarming film.

11. Gloria Swanson

Actress | Sunset Blvd.

Gloria Swanson was born Gloria May Josephine Svensson in Chicago, Illinois. She was destined to be perhaps one of the biggest stars of the silent movie era. Her personality and antics in private definitely made her a favorite with America's movie-going public. Gloria certainly didn't intend on ...

One of the few to make the transition from The Silent Screen to "The Talkies". She is a triple Academy Award Nominee. She turned in what is rightfully considered one of the greatest screen performances of all time in, "Sunset Boulevard" as Norma Desmond opposite the often overlooked William Holden. She left this world in 1983.

12. Woody Harrelson

Actor | True Detective

Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning actor Woodrow Tracy Harrelson was born on July 23, 1961 in Midland, Texas, to Diane Lou (Oswald) and Charles Harrelson. Who honestly thought at the time that the Bartender from Cheers would become an Hollywood "A" Lister? I just re-watched "True Detective" Season 1 and it only solidified his place in my mind as one of the finest.

13. Matthew McConaughey

From his smoldering intensity in "True Detective" to his subtle yet stand-out portrayal of a man of science in a post apocalyptic future world of Luddites in "Interstellar" he is a truly versatile actor. The intelligence that rises to the surface in his roles is what draws me to his work.

14. Frances McDormand

Actress | Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Frances Louise McDormand was born on June 23, 1957, in Gibson City, Illinois. She was adopted by Canadian-born parents Noreen Eloise (Nickleson), a nurse from Ontario, and Rev. Vernon Weir McDormand, a Disciples of Christ minister from Nova Scotia, who raised her in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. She ...

Like most actors on this list, I discovered her a bit later in her career when I saw "Fargo". That convinced me she was first rate. I come from the Midwest and she nailed it. Well, she should have since she's an Illinois native. Truly gifted.

15. Robert De Niro

Actor | Cape Fear

One of the greatest actors of all time, Robert De Niro was born on August 17, 1943 in Manhattan, New York City, to artists Virginia (Admiral) and Robert De Niro Sr. His paternal grandfather was of Italian descent, and his other ancestry is Irish, English, Dutch, German, and French. He was trained ...

He has a good bit of range beyond what most give him credit for. You can rightfully consider him the ultimate "Gangster" type cast. And I would agree. He nails it each time. But look at the range of work he's completed. From "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" to "The Intern" to Sam Rothstein in "Casino". One of the Greats. Not to mention 97 Oscar nominations. Take that in for a minute... 97. Now I must be honest, to me that 2015 appearance on Letterman with Dustin Hoffman was hard to stomach. It had to be a put on. The guy could barley speak. He had to look at Hoffman before speaking. I wanted to puke. It was silly.

16. Al Pacino

Actor | Serpico

Alfredo James "Al" 'Pacino established himself as a film actor during one of cinema's most vibrant decades, the 1970s, and has become an enduring and iconic figure in the world of American movies.

He was born April 25, 1940 in Manhattan, New York City, to Italian-American parents, Rose (nee Gerardi)...

He's got this great ability to rant and they let him do it in most of his movies. He does the gangster thing as well as De Niro. And he's played some characters that are about as far from that as you could imagine. "Scent of a Woman" was a revelation. An iconic role. And capping off his versatility with "You Don't Know Jack" He even played Joe Paterno. One of the all time greats.

17. Brad Pitt

Actor | Fight Club

William Bradley "Brad" Pitt was born on December 18, 1963 in Shawnee, Oklahoma and raised in Springfield, Missouri to Jane Etta Pitt (née Hillhouse), a school counselor & William Alvin "Bill" Pitt, a truck company manager. At Kickapoo High School, Pitt was involved in sports, debating, student ...

Versatile and he brings a certain physicality to his roles. You can expect a quality film if he's involved.

18. Humphrey Bogart

Actor | Casablanca

Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born in New York City, New York, to Maud Humphrey, a famed magazine illustrator and suffragette, and Belmont DeForest Bogart, a moderately wealthy surgeon (who was secretly addicted to opium). Bogart was educated at Trinity School, NYC, and was sent to Phillips Academy ...

An actor with tremendous ability. Young people who might be unfamiliar with this legend should start with the prototype of the Noir style of film making "The Maltese Falcon" In this film the character Mr. Bogart portreys is "Sam Spade". If you don't know who that is, let me inform you that you've been watching him copied and honored in every film and TV detective for the last 80 years! If you only see one "Bogey" film, make it "The Maltese Falcon"!

19. Guy Pearce

Actor | Memento

His father was born in Auckland, New Zealand, to English and Scottish parents, while Guy's mother is English. Pearce and his family initially traveled to Australia for two years, ...

A pretty versatile actor with a likeable on-screen presence. His opening wise-cracks in, "Lockout" were golden. "Oh. It was coupon night. I was trampolining your wife."

20. William Powell

Actor | The Thin Man

William Powell was on the New York stage by 1912, but it would be ten years before his film career would begin. In 1924 he went to Paramount Pictures, where he was employed for the next seven years. During that time, he played in a number of interesting films, but stardom was elusive. He did ...

One of the biggest stars of his era at MGM. If you want a real treat, watch the 1934 film, "The Thin Man" Costarring the wonderful Myrna Loy. Their boozy, breezy banter will have you smiling! That's a promise!

21. Daniel Day-Lewis

One of the greatest actors of our time. One can see this in watching the first 6 minutes of, "Lincoln" No living man has met A. Lincoln, but from all that I have learned about him, Day has done his homework and produced a timeless portrayal of the man.

22. Vincent D'Onofrio

Actor | Men in Black

Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio was born on June 30, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York, to Phyllis, a restaurant manager and server, and Gene D'Onofrio, a theatre production assistant and interior designer. He is of Italian descent and has two older sisters. He studied at the Actors Studio and the American ...

Not often mention in the list of "great actors" But the man can play anyone. Just look at "The Magnificent Seven" , "The Cell" & Full Metal Jacket" A pretty diverse group of characters. He's a real chameleon.

23. Christian Bale

Actor | The Dark Knight

Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK on January 30, 1974, to English parents Jennifer "Jenny" (James) and David Bale. His mother was a circus performer and his father, who was born in South Africa, was a commercial pilot. The family lived in different countries ...

He has great range. I came to realize this when watching, "The Fighter", with Mark Wahlberg. I've enjoyed many of Wahlberg's films. But Bale made him look like a rank amateur in that film.
