The Walking Dead: Last Day on Earth (2016)
59 perfect minutes. 1 minute absolutely awful minute.
I have never left a Walking Dead episode with such mixed emotions. I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead, both the comic and the show. Scott Gimple and co. have been able to craft a story that has been able to craft a story that shows one thing and one thing only: they truly understand what the comics are about. While everyone will always go on about how "Frank Darabont was the only good part of this show", it's undeniable. Scott Gimple and his writing team love the comics, and they've not only been able to adapt the last few volumes seamlessly into television, but in some cases, they've improved upon it. This was what I was thinking for the first 59 minutes of the show. They took a relatively simple comic storyline, and they were able to create 59 of the most intense television I've ever seen in my entire life. I believe that this is the first time in my life I have shaken from watching something from a screen. Taking this into account, I will never, ever, understand why they went with the decisions to end the episode with a cliffhanger. It instantly drove all that tension that was building and building and building down the toilet. This episode will forever be an enigma to me. I can't tell if it was studio involvement, or the writers simply wanting to increase ratings. But this will forever be one of the weakest endings to an amazing episode ever. I am floored that this was passed. Regardless, it's undeniable. The first 59 minutes were amazing. So, despite the extremely lackluster ending, I'd still have to give this episode a 9/10. Jeffery Dean Morgan played Negan a little too subtle for my liking, but I like the interpretation and I'm excited to see how the character evolves. The development of Morgan and Carol were great, and it was nice to see Eugene and Gabriel finally get some redemption. The point still stands however. I'm curious to see how Gimple will recover from with this one, as from what I can tell, the ending is universally hated.
The Walking Dead: Conquer (2015)
The best finale yet, and one of the best episodes yet.
WOW. Gimple deserves a medal. He just eradicated any doubts in my mind. Gimple is the future of the show, he is the best show runner, and he's taking this show to new heights. If you look back at the season as a whole, you realize every single episode was worth the watch and weaved the story together to this ultimate finale. This was almost Breaking Bad level writing. I applaud you Gimple. The plot easily gets a 10/10. The acting was superb as always. Andrew Lincoln should be showered in rewards after this episode. Damn fine acting. Sonequa Martin-Green was perfect, and Seth Gilliam nailed the suicidal Gabriel perfectly. Everyone was on their a game. Easily a 10/10. The dialogue was very good, and as always, the Rick speeches carry out the overall message of the season to a great note. The dialogue jumped right out of the page perfectly. 10/10. The characters go through so many progressions. Comparing Carol now to old Carol is CRAZY. Rick is developing every single minute of the episode, and all the character's arches and what they've been going through has payed off, adding to the quality of the episode. 10/10. The score, for once, gets a 5/5. It was very effective here, and really set the mood. Morgan's theme is still one of the best the show has seen, and I'm glad Bear McReary is improving with each season. I'm not going to even talk about the effects, since it's an easy 5/5. The adaption of the comics was on point as always. Adapting the source material very well while adding layers that make the overall plot even better than it was in the comics. I'm serious. This was done better than in the comics. 5/5. The significance of this episode was astounding. Every character has come out a little bit changed in a way. It's the turning point for Alexandria. New story lines are in the horizon that I can't wait for all because of this episode and the actions that Rick and everyone has done for survival. 5/5 It was extremely effective, doing everything that needed to be done, and then some. 5/5. Cinematography was great. Everything flowed and looked nice. Another easy 5/5. This episode was entertaining as f*ck. Not one dull moment, and it makes you forget episodes like Still ever even happened. Great entertainment. 10/10. Editing: the editing was effective here, and it was really nice for conveying the story, and it never hindered the episode and only improved it. 5/5. This is gonna be the episode I re-watch this season. Simply put, a timeless episode. 5/5. And with that I conclude by saying, this is the first episode of The Walking Dead i'm proud to say was perfect on every single level of a TV episode. 100/100, 100%, whatever, it's a perfect episode I will remember for years to come.
The Walking Dead: Try (2015)
And it keeps getting better
WOW. The writing the acting the directing, everything was on point this week. Rick's speech at the end (which is gonna be the focus of this review) has so many things internally within. This was the turning point for Rick and everyone in Alexandria. He's pulling off a Shane: he's telling them to wake the f*ck up and look at the world they're living, and if at this point, are they really ready for civilization, and for Rick. He began trying to regain that little humanity he had inside and in the end, he f*cked it, and now he's screwed up everything for himself. Just a great episode, go watch it for yourself. It's simply a masterpiece, and honestly, this season has proved to be the best this show has seen.
The Walking Dead: Spend (2015)
Season 5 is the new best season
this episode really opened my eyes, and made me see that.T This episode was one I'll always remember. Now let's dissect the episode:
ACTING: 10/10: The acting was as always, top notch. Steven Yeun killed it, and really made the episode as good as it was. Noah was also top notch, as was Aiden, for some bits.
DIALOGUE: 9/10: The dialogue was pretty good in this episode, what they said made sense, and it worked with the situation. Pretty good.
PLOT: 10/10: The plot maintains itself throughout the episode and fits within itself perfectly throughout all 45 minutes. Very tightly crafted, and well written.
DIRECTING: 9/10: The directing was also pretty good, and was very effective for the episode
SCORE: 3/5: The Walking Dead never had a great score, but it fit with the episode, but there were no tracks i'm going to remember
EFFECTS: 5/5: Romero-Style zombie deaths. All i gotta say.
ORIGINALITY: 4/5: Not a new story line for the zombie genre, but added new elements, that wasn't in the comic, and the spinning door is one of the greatest uses of practical things in this apocalypse we've gotten
CINEMATOGRAPHY: 4/5: Everything looked good
ENTERTAINMENT: 5/5: The deaths were particular highlights, but I was never bored during the episode and was always on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next, which deserves a perfect score.
EDITING: 4/5: Not much to say. Effective.
REWATCHABILITY: 5/5: This will be an episode all TWD fans will remember and rewatch FOR YEARS. Truly a masterpiece.
I give this episode a 93%, or a 9.3/10. An almost perfect episode, with very little things to complain about. Gimple is taking full control of the story and crafting it into an int resting direction, and getting damn good writers to help him on the way
The Walking Dead (2010)
"We're not too far gone..."
Wow. what a show. Amazing. Simply amazing. Don't listen to the other people who've reviewed this title. check it out on netflix right this instant, find some way for you to watch this show. The acting is superb. Andrew Lincoln as the main character, Rick Grimes, has been needing an emmy for quite some time now. And even actors in later seasons, like Melissa McBride were outstanding, and really drive the story forward. The character development is something out of this world. A lot of the characters from even season 1, that you think are just there as stand- ins really improve throughout the seasons, and you go on this journey with them, and grow a huge attachment to them. The writing is almost always superb (while some writers do drag the show down) writers like Scott Gimple really prove their skills and shows us an amazing show, with years planned ahead in terms of writing. Fans of the comic might be a little worried that they're straying from the source material at first, but really, once you treat the show and the comic separately the show becomes 100x better, and I can testify for that, being a die-hard TWD comic fan. The arcs that these characters go through are simply amazing, and all the different characters are amazing; Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Carol, Michonne, and so many more. Please watch this show
Whiplash (2014)
A good kind of stressful
I'm fresh from seeing the movie, and I have to say this movie is a masterpiece. The directing is well-done and keeps you tense when needed, and vice versa. The acting is superb. JK Simmons deserves the Oscar for best supporting actor, no doubt. Miles Teller gave a complete out-of-nowhere performance, proving himself to be an actor this generation will know. The writing was perfect. Nothing else to say. The movie keeps going places you don't think are gonna happen, and always keeps you guessing what's gonna happen next. The one fault I can find with the movie is that a storyline in the movie doesn't really go anywhere, and didn't get the closure I feel it deserved, but, it did not impact the movie as a whole, and even then the storyline was very minor throughout the movie. This is a must-watch.
Doctor Who: Nightmare in Silver (2013)
amazing plot, terrific acting, wonderful action, horrible kids
let me just say, that last episode felt...off. but this was VERY impressive. definitely one of the best of the season. so the basic plot is that the kids that Clara babysits find out about her time traveling, and ask her to take them somewhere, so they go to the biggest theme park in the galaxy, which is of course in the same spot as a punished crew guarding the planet against Cybermen. sounds sorta bad? trust me it gets better. the idea that they're so fully upgraded now, that that new cybermites can take over even a time lord, and the cybermen are completely invulnerable was really nice to see, and to see a very threatening villain(s), unlike a bad animated monster, a star, or an old woman with a weird thing on her breasts. now the acting was amazing. we got to see how Clara can not only be a mother like figure, but a general. also Matt smith's acting was really good. the way he changed his voice/tone when he talked as the cyberplanner really made it feel like an internal struggle, and the chess game also. the kids.... the only problem is the kids. they're just the biggest pain in the rear- end ever. the boy is just there to get controlled by the cybermite, and the girl, to act all sarcastic, but she just ends up pissing me off. really, REALLY useless characters, but i guess the episode would be weird without them. OVERALL: 8/10, Very Good.
(and the trailer for the next ep.....that itself is an 11/10)
Doctor Who: The Bells of Saint John (2013)
amazing.
i'll admit. i was never a doctor who fan. i just never really got into the show, but after hearing a lot about it from friends, they told me to give it a try. and it was the greatest decision of my life. this episode was great, and it was just an amazing experience to watch. i knew a lot about the show from common knowledge, internet etc. and i have to say it was a great way to introduce the season and re-reintroduce a character. the plot was also good, and even fit well for people who just started watching the show, like i did. The doctor and all the other actors were great in this, adding a serious tone, but keeping the comedy. it also takes a modern day thing and twists it around, practically making it a horror story. the episode was great, the plot was great, and it was overall just a lot of fun to watch. doctor who fans will be pleased, and so will new viewers.
