The Walking Dead: Last Day on Earth (2016)
Season 6, Episode 16
9/10
BOOM!
19 November 2019
6.5/10. No way! This episode was superb and as good as all the top rated episodes that proceeded it. The low ratings are clearly due to a lot of viewers feeling hurt or cheated that they had to wait 6-12 months to find out the results of this season's rather brutal cliffhanger. Well now it's on physical media and streaming so you can zoom straight onto season 7 and see what happens. No more delicate little flowers having their emotions toyed with by the big bad show writers ever again! One other thing, be sure to watch the extended uncensored version of this episode. Its portrays a civilisation where society has completely decayed and any humility or common decency has been utterly eroded away. It's harsh and unforgiving.

Autopsy (2008)
8/10
Old school horror within a modern setting.
28 August 2019
This deserves a much higher score than it currently has, 5/10 is a joke! Horror comes in many guises and as long as you head into this with thoughts of, for example Re-Animator or Society (I.e Body horror), then you should have a blast. From a presentation point of view the colour scheme is top notch. The use of coloured lighting is very much inspired by the great Dario Argento, when Dario was a true master of the craft think Suspiria, Cat o' Nine tales etc. The lighting is truly stunning with red & green bathing many scenes giving a dream like quality. A weird thing I found about Autopsy is the truly strange 1990s Canadian horror vibe it gives off. I persistently felt like I was watching a film from that era filmed in Canada like Hemaglobin or Habitat. Can't put my finger on why this is but I remember the same vibe coming over me on my 1st viewing quite a few years back. As others have said Autopsy plays out like a mad scientist horror with loads of believable practical effect gore, top notch acting and superb atmosphere. And who doesn't love a hospital based horror film especially in a facility that is abandoned and filled with lunatics. I've watched this twice now, once 5 to 10 years ago and again tonight and my score of 8/10 still stands, solid old school vibes in a nasty modern setting.

Another Life (2019–2021)
1/10
If my eyes roll back any further I'll be looking directly at my spine.
26 July 2019
Oh boy this one is painful to watch. Cringy dialog from unbelievable painful and utterly unlikable characters. All of the actors, with the exception of the lead female, the hologram & one other dude, look like they've stepped off the set of a teen drama & yet they're supposed to be scientists, engineers, pilots etc etc...........yeah riiiiiight. And the story, clichèd much! Hard to believe Netflix axed the far superior Nightflyers for this sub par rubbish.

A sweet comical tale of childhood innocence, moral fortitude, adventure, righteousness and friendship. Disney take note.
2 November 2014
A remarkably well paced beautifully animated whimsical feature with superb story progression and impeccable comedy timing, perfect for youngsters and adults alike.

I've caught snippets of the Maya TV show when my children were watching and thought it was rather sweet, but never paid much attention. Then along comes the movie. My perception of TV shows turned into feature length film's are less than stellar, often feeling like a padded out and an overly long TV episode. Maya the Bee movie firmly avoids this pitfall and feels like a stand alone tale anyone can enjoy. I frequently found myself mesmerized as though I was watching a top of their game Disney production, and I'm a 37 year old action movie loving dad!

Story: I won't dwell on it here, the IMDb covers it amply. Other than to say, though many of the topics have been covered before, it is refreshingly arranged and never feels rehashed or tiresome. There are also plenty of novel ideas making Maya a somewhat original tale.

Humour: The comedy in Maya is very slapstick and hilarious. I heard many younger and older kids in the theatre laughing over and over again (like myself) at many of the characters antics.

Violence: As another reviewer has stated there is absolutely no violence but there is threatened violence and a few mildly spooky scenes. But nothing feels out of place and any scariness is quickly exposed for what it is, misperception. The threatened violence equates to nothing more than a raised stern voice and dissatisfaction with another bug over a conflicting view or their prejudices.

Characterisation: The strong willed beautiful natured Maya. Her latently brave best friend Wily. Flip the Singing, wise, stand up comedian, Jiminy cricket channeling grass hopper. The portly fair Queen Bee. The dastardly treacherous Buzzlina Von Beena. And a slew of support cast some with prominent reoccurring roles.

Do yourself a favour, round up the kids and see this in the theatre. In a world full of violence it's great to see a movie being made which is able to tell a riveting tale of adventure, exploration, friendship, empathy, bullying, righteousness, misguided prejudice and tolerance. And still manages be absolutely riveting. It's utterly refreshing.

Roger & Me (1989)
7/10
For a beautiful representation of the divide between the have and have nots of this world, you cant go past 'Roger & Me'
7 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
For a beautiful representation of the divide between the have and have nots of this world, you cant go past 'Roger & Me'. Though quite dated in the aesthetics department, this 1988 doco by master left wing film maker 'Michael Moore', remains a poignant vision of greed and destruction of a town where the major industry (General Motors - who despite record profits up to then decided to close 11 U.S factories country wide & relocate them to Mexico paying the Mexican workers 70 cents / hr,) has shut up shop leaving 13,000 'Flint' locals out of a work. The flow on effect is catastrophic on the working class leaving many destitute fighting poverty and the eviction crew (evicting dozens of people a day, piling their belongings on the nature strip!), while they are unable to find further employment due to many of the town's businesses folding. No incomes means no spending, no spending means failed business. No businesses, means no jobs, no job no in come....well you get the picture. What is greatly insightful is the absolute ignorance the 'Wealthy' display of the troubles in their town, while playing a round of golf and discussing how many of the workers "Just don't want to work"!!!! Just goes to prove things don't change in society, the poor continue to get shafted & the rich are on the whole, selfish, in-sightless, arrogant pricks! I love the smooth over job by G.M, building a music hall and providing performances by crooner Pat Boone & other cabaret stars for half price for those out of work! Having the audacity to import a 'major' preacher to blow smoke up the population's collective arse. Just shows the contempt this company holds and the lengths it will go to distract them from the reality of their predicament! The G.M C.E.O chase is on in true 'Moore' fashion, his mission, a few answers and maybe a bit of interrogation. Looks like he'll have to look beyond his multi million dollar estate, the yacht or golf club!

General motors did a damn fine job of creating this apocalyptic landscape for the camera to document and Michael does a fine job of showing the bleakness and giving the viewer an insight of the people's painful predicament.

Pi (1998)
9/10
Masterfully handled story of mathematical brilliance.
1 May 2008
Masterfully handled intense story of mathematical brilliance and the fine line between genius and insanity. Definitely a story which demands your full attention and won't allow even slight digression without severe punishment for failure to concentrate. There is so much brilliant light and shade, perplexing angles to Pi, there is certainly little black or white and definitely no straight line journey. But persistence certainly has its rewards, and has left this viewer with a cleansed vision of what reality is to the individual, and the importance of maintaining your scruples! Though I nearly threw in the proverbial towel a couple of times, I am delighted to have stayed for the duration. Think, cerebrally focused art, avant garde with a pinch of film noir and a one of a kind refreshing meticulous yarn. If it sounds tempting, sit down, unplug the phone and tune in!

Wafer thin plot but plenty of scares, gun play & big flashy explosions.
12 December 2007
Okay, okay, enough of the lowly barely average reviews already. Resident Evil Extinction solidly lives up to the bench mark laid by its two predecessors and in my humble opinion, does it in an action packed, well paced style. These films have never been anything but popcorn laden guiltless fun, with wafer thin plots but plenty of scares, gun play & big flashy explosions. What story there is drives it forward at a nice pace and I never once found myself tapping my foot or thinking when's this going to end! Put simply I totally enjoyed my viewing of R.E3 and if your a fan of the first and second, be sure to check it out. Lets hope the saga continues its solid output in the future!

Farscape (1999–2003)
9/10
I n a word: Brilliant! Be swept along on a visceral intelligent beautiful & (dare I say it) meaty ride!
26 October 2007
After completing disc two of season 3, I just can't contain my excitement any longer. Scifi fans and fans of great television take note, Farscape goes from strength to strength progressively getting bigger, better, glossier and meatier with every passing episode.

Following a slightly jittery start, Farscape has firmly stamped itself as a truly authentic original piece of scifi / drama/ comedy / romance / thriller / horror / etc... art which is an absolute masterpiece of television creation. The characters are rich, vibrant personalities believably flesh & bone created with traits that while frequently mixing beautifully together into a rich luscious dessert, can also be like oil and water, flat out refusing to blend, subsequently clashing with the most humorous of results.

The story arc & script writing are second to none. I'm glad I mostly shunned this show (in part to its ultimate detrimental demise) :( while it was on free to air T.V, because as a DVD set, watching it is a rich and rewarding experience. Every episode has a blockbuster shine with effects that have made me drool and be swept along on a wild fantasy ride into the deepest regions of another galaxy. Simply put a brilliant show!

Canceled before its time? Its too early for me to tell, lets just state now that despite its strong story telling I'd hate to see its brilliance fade towards the end of the saga like the X-Files so abysmally did! By all accounts, the end of the 4th season and the much fan appreciated mini series tie up has allowed the show to finish on a super high, no matter how sad my parting of ways will be at completion.

1408 (2007)

Hell? .....Don't mind if I do!
27 July 2007
A seriously atmospherically creepy psychological horror thriller & one of the best from either genre in a long time. A refreshing well paced story that doesn't get bogged down in superfluous detail but seeps in under your skin and putrefies with all its glorious well formed sinister intent. While watching I had flashes of "In the Mouth of Madness", "The Others," "A nightmare on Elm St" franchise with smatterings of David Chronenberg's mastery, but it's certainly no cut & paste of any of these!

From a dark rubbled strewn world to retro fitted 1930's 5 star hotel room, 1408 has it all. A tenuous claustrophobic? 1408 will gulp the very air right from your lungs leaving your withered white gasping shell slumped on the floor! Don't say I didn't warn you! Scared of heights? Have night terrors of being trapped, isolated, freezing, white knuckled frantically grasping for anything that will stop your rapid out of control decent with the ultimate result being your virginal brain's french kiss of the side walk 30 stories below? These and greater horrors await you in this highly refreshing Author Stephen King derived yarn.

A timely film which will hopefully show direction to the ever increasingly repetitious horror makers the world over without spawning millions of copies. If you want to truly have a wild cerebrally fulfilling(and pant's filling) olé' time, then you could do a lot worse than seeing this nasty little gem.

Possession (1981)
8/10
A dream, a nightmare, or an insight into the dark recesses of the writers subconsciousness?
13 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A dream, a nightmare, or an insight into the dark recesses of the writers subconsciousness? Possession is avant garde film noir that truly has to be seen to be appreciated or believed. Set with the backdrop of Berlin Germany (wall and all) in 1981, Sam Neill plays a husband who's dear wife (Andrzej Zulawski) is becoming increasingly bleak, with her bitterness of him escilating as her self loathing intensifies. Eventually she retreats to a world of despair and increasing erratic madness ultimately resulting is an aggressive separation. At a loss and fast becoming a psychological & physical wreck, he follows his love and soon discovers she is fornicating with a black tenticled malevolent entity and has embarked on a murderous rampage, killing those that intrude on her nest. Is she acting of her own free will and a slave to her urges, are there more sinister forces at play, what is this being that has such a grip on her?

Immensely entertaining dark and often nasty but poetic through out, Possession feels like no other film I've ever seen. It is beautifully filmed with often odd seductive angles, supurbly acted, near masterful work of art which only falls down due to its extensive length and at times sluggish pacing. This is a film that is burned in your brain long after viewing and is as much an experience of the senses as a piece of celluloid entertainment. Sam Neill is brilliant in the lead role and Andrzej Zulawski is equally so. For lovers of horror, macabre art and edge of your seat intensity.
