London Underworld
highmarksreviews6 May 2020
Over the course of the past few years, I have been slowly introduced to the filmography of Gareth Evans. From V/H/S/2, Apostle and the well-loved The Raid franchise, Evans has proven he is a crafty filmmaker with a distinctly brutal approach to action scenes and composition. Gangs of London, to my best knowledge, is his first venture into TV territory and from what the first episode of Gangs of London shows off, it might be a journey well worth taking for both him and his audience.

Perhaps it's best to get the weaker elements cleared out first. Episode one is admittedly uneven at times and extremely tumultuous. There are moments where you feel Evans struggling to contain the violence in favour of dragging out the dialogue further. While the plot is made pretty clear by the end, the writing drops you into what feels like the premiere to season two. Some characters, names and deeds don't click instantly and take a little deciphering to piece together. These are just minor gripes, because even with these issues plaguing the opening minutes, there are plenty of hooks that both these characters and the plot sinks in.

At its core, however, the show feels already quite mature. It has a layered world populated with interesting, multi-faceted characters. There is also plenty for these players to do as the plot shifts its focus. Then again, Gareth Evans fans came for those fight scenes and there are a handful of them, all particularly memorable and yes, innovative and very, VERY bloody. The handheld, yet tight-framed sequences have some excellent stunt-work involved and do a good job showcasing what (hopefully) this show will deliver.

It's never a bad time for a gritty look into a seedy criminal underworld. Between said underworld being riddled with interesting characters and some grisly action scenes, "Gangs of London" is off a strong start.

Pulsating pilot
Abdulxoxo9 December 2020
What a pilot, I came upon the series by chance, little did I know that I was in for a treat. Sure the run-time seems a little bit too long, even long enough to be a featured movie but it's worth it.

The story centres on the Wallaces, a family of gangsters who are the main predators in the city's underworld, with Finn the head of the family assassinated, his son Sean go on a violent crusade to find out who was behind his father's murder. Meanwhile, unknown Wallace foot soldier Elliot rides through the ranks and earns favors when he recovers Finn's missing driver.

The cast ensemble is spot on; some mix of familiar faces and non familiar faces, fans of GOT will immediately recognize Michelle Flair, Lucian Msamati, and David Bradley in a brief role. The fight scenes are brutally choreographed, they are very spectacular and yet remain convincing and realistic. The camera-work is excellent as it captures the intensity and struggle of the combats with some really good camera angles, that includes the audience in the action. The main score is also something that cannot be overlooked, it's very good as it intensifies and atmospher-ize the sequences nicely. By end of this episode I'm already hooked, as everything unravels and we get see the motives and goals of the characters. A solid 8/10 for this adrenaline-filled pilot.

Good entertainment

Great to watch if you are on lockdown somewhere. I gave this a 7/10 as I liked the blood, gore and fast paced story. I would have given it more if the acting was a little better. The biggest question I have is when people are running around London with machine guns and then blowing Pikey camps to pieces like some SWAT team, where are the cops? It's like the police are non-existent in this series.

Considering this is a TV drama and not a big HBO or film production I say its well worth the watch. They did great with the budget they had.

A gripping opening episode!
david-rowe-683-14693426 April 2020
I went into GoL without much prior knowledge, other than a friend's recommendation. What followed blew me away.

Whilst a lengthy first episode, it whips along at a good pace and does an excellent job of setting the scene, and who the key players are. I disagree with the critics review that it drags in places and needs tightening up. I was gripped and this is from someone that really struggles to sit through a lot of films/tv in one sitting.

It reminds me of GoT in a way - a number of rival families and organisations vying for power in the wake of the untimely death of the Head of the gang.

If this first episode is anything to go by, this has plenty of potential and could be something quite special. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Nothing like peaky blinders.
adamjdavis-9195025 April 2020
I really don't get why people use peaky blinders as a reference. Can't this just be its own thing. Because it deserves it. What a fantastic opener. Cast, script, direction is the best I've seen from my homeland in years.

Mind-blowing stuff

I couldn't help but pause the movie and scream into the atmosphere especially during Elliot's fight scenes. Absolutely enthralling. I'm expecting more of the same in forthcoming episodes. Highly recommended.

A great show has a great first episode

Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of gangs of london feels like a goddamn movie, with the epic opening scene with great cinematography. We don't get one but two epic fight scenes that were both teased in the trailer and the reveals in the episode such as elliot being a undercover cop and finn wallace just being assassinated by a young man that is a coward. The highlight of the episode is definitely when elliot has to fight off a big guy in his pants armed with a meat cleaver i was practically sitting on the edge of my seat. Brillant!!!

A great beginning

As a massive, massive fan of Welsh director Gareth Evans - his RAID films are my favourites, ever - it was inevitable that I'd be eager to check out his new gangster-themed TV show. The good news is that this feature length first episode is everything I'd hoped for, an action-packed and brutal introduction to a dark world of backstabbing and conspiracy, where rival ethnic gangs battle for supremacy and a slice of the profits. A big cast acquit themselves well with the very dramatic material and there are two fight scenes here with the stunning choreography you expect from Evans. More, please!

A very promising show

This is a brutal first episode and, living in London myself, it gives me a different perspective on the city. Interesting photography, some nice shots, good acting.

Warning: Spoilers
Definitely not the best pilot I've ever seen, but it had some positives. It had good pacing because it definitely didn't feel like its 93 minutes runtime, and the plot certainly has potential. It was sometimes nicely shot, and I especially liked the reveal of Elliot to be undercover. Production is clean and sets are nice. However, I think there were quite a few more downsides. The writing for a start was shoddy. There were so many inconceivable events happening in broad daylight, just completely unrealistic and caricaturish. The dialogue wasn't exactly great either, with expository dialogue sounding pretty forced and unnatural. It also felt hard to follow at times, which is understandable when they throw us in the deep end of an underground crime world with 1001 characters. One of the main characters, Sean, is unlikeable, and Elliot isn't exactly enthralling. For that matter, I'm not sure there's a single character at this point that I'd consider likeable. It's early days so I won't be too critical of that for now. The action scenes were tiresome and again, completely ridiculous. I do hope this doesn't become a regularity. I wasn't a fan of the shaky cam, and a lot of the episode seemed to be shot handheld by someone who doesn't have the steadiest hands in the world. Overall, it was pretty meh, but there is definitely potential for it to get better so I'll be sticking with it

Writing ? Script

When Sean says how many was there 6 Elliott says 8 but I had a dart ,I think the show tries to hard to be a tough movie not in a natural way. Some great actors but script lets it down for me.
