Lessons on Despiration

Be aware that this episode contains a great deal of extremely gruesome video footage and photography of the casualties and devestation of the Dresden raid and of air and ground combat related to the story line. I expect many people will find it disturbing and perhaps horrifying.

I have been aware of the Dresden raid for several decades but never learned the details. I was anxious to learn more and I chose this episode from the series to watch first. For me, this was an excellent overview of the events leading up to the raid, of the actions that transpired during the raid and the reslting impact on the war. The allies motivations for proceding with the raid are supported by these historical events.

Thoughout the episode the program directly confronts the overarching question whether the action against Dresden was immoral even in an environment of "Total War" (a term esposed by Hitler). I feel the episode gives a balanced description of controversy. I addition to the Allies motivations it presents the German perspective but distinguishes fact from propoganda and describes the regret felt by many Allied leaders in the aftermath.

While the program presents the various opinions it does not endorse any of them. Perhaps the producers, directors and writers feel as I do; that safe in my home 75 years later, I don't feel qualified nor justified in making a judgement. But I felt they they are suggesting Dresden should serve as warning against such actions in the future.

Amazing documentary, but the map maker should be fired!
alexito7816 December 2019
The revised footage is impressive and also the experts carry the storyline greatly with their details and opinions. So generally seen, I am completely amazed by this 2nd world war - documentary. But...

who created these wrong and ridiculous maps and who approved these maps to be shown in the series? This documentary looks so professional in its details, but then unfortunately, the embedded maps show nearly all of the biggest and most popular German cities like Hamburg or Frankfurt hundreds of kilometers from their actual location! There are also some other stupid errors in the maps, like Germany's biggest island Rügen belonging to the Allied already (colored in blue)? The viewer gets here wrong information that should be revised to carry the right stories!

So, related these wrong details I am reducing my rating to 7 instead of 9.

What an episode! Flipped everything on its head

Throughout the series I was feeling more and more proud to be British, as we were fighting of the evil nazi's and being very cleaver and revolutionary in doing so, however the Dresden firestorm brings into light the morality of the allies tactics and shows that the war wasn't simply a 'good vs evil' affair. The narration is utterly fantastic, as it is throughout the series. A very well made documentary overall, this by no means the best episode, although it is a turning point in the doc' where the actions of both sides get scrutinised. I don't think the Dresden incident is very well know, especially compared to the famous event such as D-Day and Stalingrad. People should be aware of this horrific attack and this episode is incredibly informative and impartial. 10Stars! It left me with goosebumps.

Justify the mass killing
mayashamdan-086118 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Episode aimed to justify the mass killing done by the allies in Dresden . From the start where they talk about london bombing to the end where they suggest that 25000 civilians killed within an hour is a small number or at least no as big as the german said !! Both sides of the war were monsters but the history is written by the victors.

The Nazis are beasts.. and so are we!!
dr_kareem1 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Germans had killed civilians, so we shall do the same!! If this is you starting argument, then You are no different than them!

The Germans are the faulty cause they haven't built bomb shelters for the civilians!!!! Not you who bombed civilians and left military targets untouched!!!!!! As James Holland stated!! They are beasts and so are you Mr.!! Then why you have had a second raid?!! To make sure the civilians are safe?! The firemen?! The children?! The innocents!!

Kill civilians while actually the war was coming to an end!!!!!!!! The red army was winning already on the east, but yet you have the guts to justify this terror!! No different than Benladen and ISIS who justify their terror!

The hell with all fanatics! With the Nazis, Hitler, and so do Harris and everyone participated in this massacre!

This episode is Nazi sympathy

I love this series so much so. Learned alot that I did not Know about the war before that fascinated me. This episode however annoyed me. They just empathized with the Germans who finally felt the war that they allowed to happen. To say that Germans didn't know what their country was carrying out is a disrespect to all of those who were killed by the Reich. They disserved everything that came to them.
