Unpredictable falsehood
TheLittleSongbird16 May 2018
'Criminal Minds' has always been one of my most-watched shows and was a personal favourite for a while. Seasons 1-5 was its best period, Season 4 was especially great. It did get hit and miss from Season 6 onwards, with a mix of good and more episodes and disappointing and less episodes. Season 11 was, apart from about 5 episodes, pretty weak. Season 12 was inconsistent but generally an improvement, its weakest episodes nowhere near as bad as the low-points of Seasons 6, 9 and especially 11.

Season 13 so far has not been too bad, in fact it's been quite good. It is already so much better than Season 11, which started off well actually but quickly went downhill, and has generally settled quicker than Season 12. As far as the previous Season 13 episodes go, "Wheels Up, "Killer App" and "Dust and Bones" were particularly good. Up to this point, only "To a Better Place" and "Neon Terror" were a little disappointing, with a lot of admirable qualities but also an over-familiar and not much special case.

"False Flag" actually for me was one of the better Season 13 episodes. The case has enough nice and surprising turns to stop things from being too familiar and a lot of creativity. In fact, it is the most unpredictable and unique case of the season up to this point and one of the most unpredictable and unique of the season overall.

The team work, the procedural aspects and how it's all solved evokes prime 'Criminal Minds', there is lots of each and it's all thought-provoking and delightful. It doesn't make the mistakes that many latter season episodes made (i.e. too much unsub, unsub revealed too early, problematically executed cases, too much reliance on convenience, lack of balance, too many soapy personal life subplots, team underuse and not enough procedural/delving into the criminal's mind). In fact, there is a sense that "False Flag" didn't forget what made 'Criminal Minds' work so well in the first place. The twists keep coming, many genuinely shocking, and the unsub reveal was not an obvious one at all.

Plenty of room for little character moments within the team, one of my favourite things about 'Criminal Minds' and something that lifts even the lesser episodes. There are not enough of them, but everybody shares the disbelief and what the heck reaction to Melissa's absurd theory. Am usually not a fan of Tara, she being one of my biggest problems with Season 11, but really liked her no-nonsense approach and saw her point of view.

Everybody does a great job with the acting, all the regulars are strong as ever and Zelda Williams is simply delicious as Melissa. Really liked the colourful character of Bob too.

Visually, "False Flag" is stylish and atmospheric, while the music is haunting without being over-bearing while having presence still, the script is taut with a touch of sweetness and poignancy here and there and Joe Mantegna's directing is some of his best for the show, the interrogation scenes having effective claustrophobia.

Would have liked more team character moments in a flashback and interrogation heavy episode.

But for me the only big criticism was the motive for the crimes, with such a surprising unsub, a creative case and twists that genuinely shocked the motive underwhelms in how clichéd and ordinary it is.

Overall though, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Different kind of edgy
paolabelle22 December 2017
Different from any other episode - so, maybe disturbing (because of the subject or because of the unusual game plan or both ) - but interesting. I give 8 out of 10. I am happy to see that writers want to try different things, move in different directions. This is what can keep that show alive. Story is not obvious and line is not so predictable as it was in earlier seasons, adding a lot to the development of the characters - making episode extremely valuable.

False Flag

Warning: Spoilers
This show may not be "edgy" but I was still surprised to have them introduce a character that is a Sandy Hook truther.

It wasn't a bad episode, but it was just not exciting, and given the premise, given the context, it should have been. I think the writers thought they were so clever tackling truthers that they mailed in the actual case this week.

Crimes investigations dealing with public opinion and conspiracies.

There is a great storytelling in this episode with the present time investigation of the case mixed with flashbacks, there is the pressure of the "only chance to win" factor, a mysterious unsub pulling the strings behind the scene, the sensible interrogation tatics, an antagonist getting into the BAU skin, the paradox of how close a investigation work can dangerously lean into pointing fingers without evidences (exactly like how 'truthers' operate), psychological profiling, touchy subjects, minor political commentary and a lot of cleveness in general.

This is one of the best episodes from this season with moments that makes most of the characters shines, Prentiss shows more leadership (as Hotchner had), Tara deals with the psychological drama which is (or should be) her speciality, JJ show her smarts as always, Rossi brings the rationality with his advices, Matt and Luke operates like the manpower they are supposed to be and Penelope, like always, brings a lot of valuable information to the team, gladly the team is less reliable of her own work to solve the entire case. It's infortunate that Reid is not in this episode.

While the plot is clever and engaging the story is a little hard to follow, the information is given too fast, the situations keeps happening in a quick pace while they touch real events that makes your head wander off from the case, one little distraction and you end up lost in the story. I think it's a little bit too dynamic for the regular viewer of the show that it is used to a regular serial killer with a clear pattern that BAU slowly discovers.

Some negatives that should be mentioned is that BAU shows a mild arrogance dealing with truthers which is only natural given the sensibile subject they constantly challenge and how smug they act but it's not pointless, actually makes sense with the emotional pressure the episode deals and with the ending. Other thing is that, like always, there is some lack of logic behind some minor details (like how the killer preemptibly knew somehow that the metal detector would not work and etc) but nothing that ruins the episode.

It's very interesting to see Criminal Minds not falling into the comfortable pattern (debriefing, jet talk, crime scene analysis, killer strikes again, Garcia extra information/queries, killer reveal, aprehensive arrest) and trying new approachs.

I think other reviewers should watch and judge this episode for what it is in relation to "Serial Killers Investigations and public opinions about the conspiracies around it" subject more than how they position themselves about random subjects they inserted in the middle of the episode, which is pointless to anyone willing to watch the show.

It's a great direction for the show!

Different episode

Different type of episode for sure, but I still think it was nicely done. Zelda Williams did a great job because I found her character absolutely insufferable. It highlighted a "movement" that is getting more popular over the years.

One of a kind episode, tackling a very current issue.

It's been a long time since I haven't been able to follow a Criminal Minds on TV. And this episode reminded me how I used to love this show. Granted some cases and seasons are better than others, but it's a one I always watch, when it's on. Apparently this storyline hits some people, and reviewers, where it hurts. But it's a very gripping investigation, with an extremely satisfying conclusion. And some interesting twists and views on the matter.

It was almost impossible to sit through this entire episode

Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this episode is so horrible. Not just the guest actors, but the main cast too. I couldn't even remotely understand the details of the case, way too much stuff going on. This episode didn't feel like criminal minds at all, and this whole show just continues to go further and further down since Hotch and Morgan left. The female actors used to be the problem in this show. They've always been either boring or obnoxious, like in Garcia's case, but now the male actors are just as bad. Either horrible acting, or just extremely dull and lifeless. They should of cancelled the show after the 11th season, or maybe even sooner. I don't even want to know how bad the last two seasons are after this one, and since Morgan and Hotch aren't coming back for the reboot either, I'm sure that won't be any better.
