We were waiting for the fight...
louiseallmark26 May 2018
....and in this episode it came!

From Serena's background story, to subtle hints of a kinder woman, slowly building up to an explosive ending!

And what a perfect ending song - listen to the lyrics, it's perfect!

Praised be, more Serena and Fred.

A great episode with a good balance of flashbacks where we learn more about Serena and Fred's past. We see alot more of a nicer side to Serena (or so it appears). Acting was on point (as usual) and has some good dark humour in this episode. Great cliffhanger as well.

This is what we've been expecting for a long time

The tempo and the tension (and how it increases slowly but steady) in this episode is incredible well managed, from the interaction between June and Serena to the shocking finale. 10/10.

Great episode. Could have been a finale.

Love this show. The pacing and the acting is superb. This episode had all emotions clicking at the same time.

I would like to say the review that was saying guards with guns were not present is wrong. They were there, they just were as surprised as anyone that one of their cattle would sacrifice themselves.

It was well executed and going forward I doubt the same mistake will be made again. That said it is a new world and they never thought that their precious maidens loathe them so.

Great show.

A beautiful episode

The camerawork and music are extraordinary. The tempo builds up tension that bursts in the most stunning way in the end. I could watch this episode over and over again for its aesthetics. 10/10

There are guards with guns.

This was THE most satisfying episode yet, at the last minute. And also to point out that there WAS security with guns at the opening meeting of the new Slave Center. One reviewer was mistaken.

Secrets and lies

Warning: Spoilers
The writing and acting bristle as always. Serena's mood swings, Fred's perversions, Nick's "call of duty," and June's use of her power are reliable plot lines reignited here. The only off note, to my mind, is the flashed-back past that hitches Serena's alternative feminism to the suggestion of her and Fred's nascent revolution as sparked by intemperate campus lefties - argubly buying into the victimhood narrative of today's right wing. This will be one to chew on for a while.

Nick has to lay with Eden
vivianla3 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
June is shown some kindness by Serena. She is allowed to sleep in Serena's sitting room and Serena even throws a gathering with other handmaids as a surprise for June. Serena tries to help create conversation and then June animatedly mentions previous food places. Serena actually knows one of them and says they perhaps were all there at one point in the past. It is possible.

Nick has dinner in his room with Eden. Eden cooked the meal with potatoes and says the secret ingredient is rosemary which was given by Serena. Eden says her mother taught her how to cook and tend to the house. Eden knows everything there is about marriage and implies she knows about sex and what is expected of her. She sits closer to Nick and he dismisses her to go for a smoke outside. Eden tells Nick he can smoke inside, do as he pleases as this is his home.

Eden tells June her worries about Nick being a gender traitor as they haven't had sex yet.

June comes running down angrily after Serena refuses to let her see Hannah and tells her to take her things back to her room. Nick asks what is wrong and follows June.

June warns Nick that he could be on the Wall. He needs to have sex with Eden or else he might be accused. Nick replies Eden is 15 and June angrily replies in a sarcastic manner that having sex (the f-word) with something you don't want to is so difficult. That evening Nick and Eden pray. Nick asks Eden if she is sure and she replies she is. She takes off her clothes and goes under the cover. Nick takes off his outermost top and unbuckles his pants. We see him lift the sheet (assuming to get hard) to look at her lower half then proceeds to grunt as they have sex. He finishes quickly and rolls off her as she moans. Eden says she will wait and hope something will come of it. If not, they can try again and again.

We see the handmaids gathered at the new centre with Commanders all sitting inside. All the handmaids are waiting outside. One of the handmaids goes inside with a ticking bomb and it explodes.

Something unreasonable

Warning: Spoilers
At the end of this episode, one of those handmaids made a explosion. That scene is a surprise. BUT where were the Security personnel? In the former episodes, we can see those men with rifles everywhere. Where were they in this so important meeting?

Serena's Reckoning
badeclerck28 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In the sixth episode of The Handmaid's Tale Season 2, the spotlight shifts onto Serena Joy, rendering it arguably the series' most compelling installment to date. The nuanced complexity of Serena's character takes center stage, unraveling layers of contradiction, vulnerability, and a profound sense of displacement within the world she helped forge.

Serena emerges as the most intricate character in the series, navigating the tumultuous waters of her own psyche. Oscillating between moments of endearment and detestation, she exhibits almost bipolar shifts in temperament. What becomes increasingly apparent is that Serena appears out of place in the very society she played a pivotal role in establishing. While her instrumental role in Gilead's creation was known, the depth of her internal struggle and dissatisfaction with the system comes to the forefront.

The episode sheds light on Serena's lectures, emphasizing her attempt to uphold the rigid gender roles dictated by Gilead. However, the revelation that she orchestrated the assassination attempt on herself adds a layer of complexity. It becomes evident that Serena is not content within the confines of Gilead, as the prospect of another woman carrying her child and sharing intimacy with her husband torments her. Her internal conflict between the desire for a child and the agony of seeing someone else fulfill that role creates a poignant tension.

Serena's behavior oscillates between moments of empathy, particularly with Offred, and an authoritarian cruelty that asserts her dominance. The episode takes a poignant turn when Offred, driven by desperation, requests to see her firstborn child, Hannah. Serena's refusal and the subsequent reversion to a tyrannical stance mark the termination of any lingering sympathy for Offred.

The climactic conclusion of the episode unfolds with the explosion at the Léa and Rachel Center, an event inaugurated by Commander Waterford. The attack, orchestrated by Ofglen, results in the deaths of commanders and handmaids. The aftermath raises critical questions about the scale of casualties and the far-reaching repercussions that will undoubtedly reshape the dynamics of Gilead.

The Handmaid's Tale continues its unrelenting exploration of a dystopian society, delving deeper into the psyche of its characters. Serena's internal conflict becomes emblematic of the dissonance within Gilead itself. As the series navigates the aftermath of the explosive events, the repercussions are poised to resonate far beyond the initial devastation, promising a narrative trajectory fraught with tension, conflict, and unforeseen consequences. This episode stands as a testament to the show's ability to weave intricate character narratives within the broader tapestry of a society in upheaval.

First Blood
bobcobb30112 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I know a lot of people will praise this episode because of the comparison to our current political climate echoed in the Serena flashbacks to her speaking at a college and then the big shock at the end, but overall I have to say this episode was a tad boring.

Even when the pace is slow and methodical it is usually entertaining, but I found myself drifting off. The Serena and June scenes were not as powerful as I think the show thought they were.

The devil's in the details
Leofwine_draca14 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The writing's better in this episode which makes it a better episode all round, although Offred is still the least interesting character in the show - her character arc is so stagnant - and every other character, large or small, feels more interesting. Little happens again here, but the subteties and character beats are what makes this one work.
