I am not a musicals fan...
lthresh6 January 2019
As Les Miserables has so much hype around it, the opportunity to watch it as a non-musical piqued my interest. All the acting was good though I was not too keen on Dominic West's accent. The first episode I found quite engaging. I feel quite proud of myself for watching it and putting aside my biased views which stem from the fact that it seems to be held in such high regard that I have been put off watching it.

Not bad , the best thing I can say about it

To be honest, I was pretty hyped about this show and I canceled important things to watch the first episode on BBC. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. I can't say it was bad but it wasn't good either. It didn't add anything to the story, the acting was in no way impressive and the retailing of the events was so dull that I didn't have any feelings for the characters. However bad this episode was, I will not judge this show based on one episode and I will try to stay unbiased for the rest of it.

Episode 1

Andrew Davies made a sumptuous and expertly condensed version of War & Peace in 2016.

Les Misérables is another lengthy novel. Previous film versions, well the one without any songs, concentrate on convict Jean Valjean.

Davies's version does not forget the sub plots relating to the other characters in the book. After all the title is about the 'wretched.'

This first episode opens the day after the French defeat of Waterloo. It gives it a sense of scope and epicness.

Valjean (Dominic West) has been doing hard labour, breaking rocks for over 19 years. He saves the life of a guard who is crushed by a rock fall and gets no thanks for using his strength to save him.

His guard Javert (David Oyelowo) taunts him that he will be back in prison for life for the next crime he commits.

Valjean leaves prison enraged and bitter with the injustices of the world. The word ex-con etched on to his skin.

West gives a gruff performance as Valjean. Derek Jacobi gives another nice performance as the kindly priest who gives Valjean food and shelter and forgives his misdemeanours.
