Les Misérables: Episode #1.1 (2018)

Andrew Davies made a sumptuous and expertly condensed version of War & Peace in 2016.

Les Misérables is another lengthy novel. Previous film versions, well the one without any songs, concentrate on convict Jean Valjean.

Davies's version does not forget the sub plots relating to the other characters in the book. After all the title is about the 'wretched.'

This first episode opens the day after the French defeat of Waterloo. It gives it a sense of scope and epicness.

Valjean (Dominic West) has been doing hard labour, breaking rocks for over 19 years. He saves the life of a guard who is crushed by a rock fall and gets no thanks for using his strength to save him.

His guard Javert (David Oyelowo) taunts him that he will be back in prison for life for the next crime he commits.

Valjean leaves prison enraged and bitter with the injustices of the world. The word ex-con etched on to his skin.

West gives a gruff performance as Valjean. Derek Jacobi gives another nice performance as the kindly priest who gives Valjean food and shelter and forgives his misdemeanours.
