Just a Few Words About This
alexdiflip2 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I'd love to say how much I enjoyed this episode. It's well-paced, written, and acted.

I'll start with the smaller storylines first. Deja's moving her way to be a major plot point again, and although we have yet to see what happens, I'm excited for the potential. Id love a wrap-up on Deja's story with her mother, and for them to get closure.

Tess takes on a greater role in this episode. This storyline was very important to me especially. I was sitting there hoping they would get it right the entire time. See, I had to come out to my parents too, and as a young teen, that's not an easy task AT ALL. Tess's moodiness and reclusiveness throughout this episode and the last episode (with Toby and Kate) is almost EXACTLY what I went through. She tells Kate first before her own parents. I did the same thing. The closer a person was to me, the harder it was to tell them. And yes, it goes pretty much like that. Because even if you know your parents will be supportive, there's still something that makes it hard. If you love your parents, you don't want anything to change. Therefore, you don't want to risk telling them. So I very much appreciate how this topic and that scene was handled and written, and id like to personally thank the writers for maturely depicting this (in an insanely realistic way).

Kate and Toby's storyline is the slower one of the episode, and evens it out a bit in terms of tension. Kate and her storylines get a lot of hate on IMDb, but I genuinely enjoy where her arc is going. Sure, this episode and maybe last episode her stories weren't extremely exciting, but this show makes them important and makes sure they count. Also, kudos to Chrissy Metz for her portrayal of Kate.

Randall and Beth's story hurt. A lot. Seeing a campaign eat at a relationship like that isn't easy to watch, but it is SO well written and their storyline is heading in some pretty interesting directions as well. The arc that is set in the future still makes me yearn for more episodes just so I can understand what's going on there. How are Randall and Beth doing? Is this the start of something worse? I hope not, but if it is, the writers planted the seeds well.

And finally, Kevin and Jack's story. I was expecting this episode to answer some questions about Nicky, but I OF COURSE did not expect what actually happened. That's just great plotting, right there. (Also I loved the meta-jokes with Kevin talking about this journey being like a finale of sorts. Very funny.) But that journey also brings some feelings near the end, where Kevin says exactly what the audience is thinking, which is that he really hoped to find something more. I'm sure there'll be complaints about Kevin and his dead end, and the buildup for his journey fizzling out, but it led to something EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. As well as this, This Is Us is known for having very real moments, and this was one of them. A journey can be filled with tons of anticipation and possibility, but not everything leads to some big dramatic moment. Sometimes it just builds up to the next opportunity. Lots of new questions. Keeping me interested.

This Is Us is of course known for its cast and its writing, and I'd like to personally thank the cast and crew for this episode. It really warms my heart to see all of this wonderful stuff on my television. Thank you! Can't wait for this show to be back.a

The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning (#3.9)

Great episode! I loved Kevin's story in Vietnam. His conversation with the man was pretty good. Too bad he didn't fund the woman but now there is a bigger story that Nick is alive! This will be great. Randall also was great at his campaign. Very much like he is. I am not sure why Beth wants him to quit. If she is sure he won't win, just let him run until the end! Rebecca also had a beautiful talk with Tess which let her to come out to her parents.

No Easy Answers

We continue the Vietnam investigation. Kevin is obsessed and Zoe is really only along for the ride. We see parallels between the Vietnam war and the visit to find out what happened between Dad and the mystery woman. Tess is dealing with conflicting feelings about her sexuality. It's a solid episode because nothing is simple. That's why television shows were so popular because they presented us with characters we would like to be but just can't be. We also get to see how Jack as a soldier does everything in his power to being Nicky home, but the guy is so full of PTSD that it's not going to happen.

Usually I don't rate movies or tv episodes badly, just because the plot goes in a way I don't like...

...but here, almost. Implying that Randall's marriage will fail, it breaks my heart. Completely. I can handle death, but thinking of two people, which are THAT great together, split up, that's too much.

Otherwise, great as usual.

Disappointing Mid Season Finale
rogercg128 November 2018
I LOVE this series, but, I really disliked this episode. It was like a daytime soap opera episode-overly dramatic and made sure it got all the characters some screen time. It was shoddily written and pedestrian, as if the writers were trying to fit things in quickly and effortlessly. So disappointing in so many ways. I thought the usual award winning writers had been replaced by the B team. This Is Us can be so much better.

Very disappointing mid season episode

This season has been so up and down. The story lines that are most interesting are Jack's war story and Kevin finding info on his dad. Why is Randall doing what hes doing? Kate and Toby are boring boring boring. Tes situation came out of nowhere and is added to an already full plate of food. Then there making Deja situation a BIG THING again. (They could easily explore what Deja is going through at school or something.)

What im thinking is the writers must be pressured into getting everybody to have a story this season. so much is going on.

I wish they'd hurry up and close up Jack's history. Keep the kevin and his lady friend stuff goin. More more more of Jack and Rebecca and the young kids.

This episode was rushed and jam packed with too much stuff and a bit boring.

But ill watch because i love this show.
