Having it’s World Premiere at SXSW on March 14 was Alex Garland’s Civil War.
The Hollywood Reporter says, “The audience reaction to the film has been very effusive, with viewers calling it a riveting, disturbing, masterful piece of filmmaking (read the audience and critic first reactions).”
The consensus of many of the reviews out of the film festival in Austin say the film is brilliant:
“With the precision and length of its violent battle sequences, it’s clear Civil War operates as a clarion call. Garland wrote the film in 2020 as he watched cogs on America’s self-mythologizing exceptionalist machine turn, propelling the nation into a nightmare. With this latest film, he sounds the alarm, wondering less about how a country walks blindly into its own destruction and more about what happens when it does,” says Lovia Gyarkye in her review over at The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2017, the film Bushwick was released starring Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow. (Trailer)
Bushwick tells the story of twenty-year- old Lucy (Snow) and war veteran Stupe (Bautista). Texas, and other states (mostly Southern) are trying to secede from the U.S., and NYC is being used as a negotiation tool. Lucy meets Stupe after coming up from the subway into the military invasion of Brooklyn. Together they decide to cross the treacherous five blocks of Bushwick – littered with looters, local militias and the invading forces, in order to get home and be reunited with Lucy’s grandmother.
In December 2023, Netflix released a similar, dystopian movie, Leave The World Behind. (Trailer) After a series of coordinated attacks on the United States from within, a series of bizarre events leaves most of the population isolated from their phones, internet and communications, and leads to a state of confusion. While Dave Bautista may have started his career as a pro wrestler, he has since distinguished himself as an actor, to the point where he is now probably more associated with his films than his feats of athletic theater. Besides his role as Drax the Destroyer in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bautista has spent the last few years honing his craft. He's worked with acclaimed directors in Denis Villeneuve, Rian Johnson, and Sam Mendes, who've given him supporting roles in the likes of sci-fi epics "Dune" and "Blade Runner 2049," the mystery whodunnit "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," and the James Bond film "Spectre."
Alongside, Bautista has slowly built a leading-man portfolio for himself, with action thrillers such as "Bushwick," "Final Score," and Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead." With his latest film, however, the 54-year-old takes on something different.

Exclusive: Christian Navarro (13 Reasons Why) and Gregg Sulkin (Marvel’s Runaways) are the latest additions to the cast of Melissa Miller Costanzo’s indie The List, starring the previously announced Halston Sage.
The comedy penned by Rob Lederer and Steve Vitolo centers on Abby (Sage), a woman who is about to get married, for whom everything is perfect. Until she finds out her fiancé has slept with a celebrity from his “free pass” list. To get her mind off things, Abby and her best friend Chloe come up with a crazy idea: Abby should pursue a celebrity from her own list. But things become complicated when she meets Jake (Navarro), who gives her a fresh perspective.
Sulkin will play Cooper Shaw, a humble sex symbol that cuts across comedy and drama movies. He does it all: acts, dances, sings. Even though he has been on the Sexiest Man Alive list...

Out of Hollywood’s three former professional wrestlers that decided to step away from the squared circle and focus on the silver screen, Dave Bautista is arguably the best actor, as well as the most interesting in terms of the roles he chooses.
Dwayne Johnson might be the biggest and highest-paid star in Hollywood with charisma for days, but he’s become averse to taking any sort of risks, and can be found almost exclusively in big budget blockbusters where he plays variations of the same character over and over again.
John Cena, meanwhile, is an underrated comic talent, but he too is happy to split his time between action-orientated fare like Fast & Furious 9 and The Suicide Squad and standard studio comedies such as Playing with Fire and Blockers without testing himself in more dramatic territory. In 2014, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion presented their debut feature, Cooties, a humorous take on the zombie subgenre with infected kids and their teachers as the victims. Later on, in 2017, the directing duo made Bushwick, a peculiar Children of Men-like action thriller with several long takes, in which Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow’s characters try to survive an unsettling armed attack to the titular Brooklyn neighborhood. Now Milott and Murnion are back with another genre effort, this time approaching the home invasion and the revenge subgenres. In Becky, the titular young girl (played by Lulu Wilson) is mourning the death of her mother and even though her father (Joel McHale) is planning to get married...

What if Kevin James was cast as a neo-Nazi? That’s one of the many uninspired questions that Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gruesome “Becky” answers in a movie driven by an increasingly boring set of narrative dares. Others include: What if the protagonist was a teenage girl so angry she could actually kill? What if there was a MacGuffin that was literally a key that didn’t open anything? Even as the movie The pair’s earlier film, “Cooties,” suffered from similar issues, attempting to build a thin idea (what if a zombie pandemic only turned little kids into monsters?) but at least it yielded more entertaining results.
“Becky” is as grim and gruesome as any horror movie in recent memory, but that alone can’t save this gross-out thriller. Still, the story opens with promise, through candy-colored title cards and fast cuts between Becky (the wonderful Lulu Wilson...

At some point during their careers, almost every recognizable comedy actor will inevitably try their hand at more serious and dramatic fare, and Kevin James is the latest addition to that list. Although he’s best known for being a frequent collaborator in the seemingly never-ending stream of Adam Sandler vehicles, this week sees the former King of Queens star playing a villain for the first time.
Hailing from the directors of little-seen Dave Bautista action thriller Bushwick, Becky sees James playing the bad guy opposite 14 year-old horror veteran Lulu Wilson of Ouija: Origin of Evil, Annabelle: Creation and The Haunting of Hill House fame, in a home invasion movie that was originally set to premiere as part of the Tribeca Film Festival before it was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
As you can see below, the synopsis doesn’t sound as though Becky will be breaking any new narrative ground,...

After making a career in sitcoms and comedies, Kevin James is traveling down a darker path. The King of Queens and Paul Blart actor is playing a neo-Nazi who terrorizes a family in the search for a certain item. Coming from Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the directing duo behind Cooties and Bushwick), the first trailer has now landed ahead of a June digital release.
We’ve seen the likes of Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, and more pivot to darker material, and here James seems to be strictly chewing the horror-thriller scenery. Also starring Lulu Wilson, Amanda Brugel, Robert Maillet and Joel McHale, see the trailer below.

Although he may be best known as Doug Heffernan in The King of Queens or a diehard mall cop in the Paul Blart movies, Kevin James plays an altogether vicious villain in the home invasion thriller Becky. Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the filmmakers behind Cooties and Bushwick), Becky is coming to VOD and Digital on June 5th, and the film's trailer offers a look at James' intense character that's a far cry from his comedic roles.

Exclusive: Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has signed with CAA. He had been with Gersh. For a mixed martial artist still establishing himself onscreen through his role as Drax in Guardians and turns in films Blade Runner 2049, Hotel Artemis, the 007 film Spectre and the Avengers: Infinity War sequels, Bautista has shown an admirable level of courage in speaking out against Disney’s firing of Guardians director James Gunn because of the filmmaker’s trail of sarcastic and indefensible old tweets that were exhumed and publicized by alt-right journalists. It has drawn Bautista, an emerging talent, a measure of respect in town.

The first season of 13 Reasons Why captured our attention for a number of reasons - the gripping story, the unflinching approach to teen suicide, the dramatic twists - but none of it would be as successful if it wasn't for the talented young cast. One of the standout performances in both season one and two comes from Christian Navarro, who plays the wise, leather-jacket-clad Tony.
While season one makes his character much more mysterious, season two digs in to his character. We get to watch Tony struggling with some serious inner turmoil, falling in love, and helping Clay make sense of the aftermath of Hannah's death. Wondering where you've seen him before?
Navarro has made guest appearances on a number of TV dramas like Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Blue Bloods, The Affair, and Rosewood, but he's only had one recurring role before breaking out on 13 Reasons Why.

Billed as a contemporary reimagining of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” Fessenden’s project focuses on a field surgeon who suffers from Ptsd after combat in the Middle East, and creates a living human out of body parts in his Gowanus, Brooklyn lab.
This is not the first time Fessenden has used the backdrop of a creepy laboratory to explore real-world concerns. His 1991 feature “No Telling” focused on a man experimenting on animals and the impact of the work on his personal life. Fessenden is best known for directing the 1999 New York vampire drama “Habit,” the mystical “Wendigo,...

Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s fierce tension in this breathless urban survival thriller as anarchy comes to New York streets. Terrific, innovative low-budget action filmmaking. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

College student Lucy (Brittany Snow: Pitch Perfect 2) comes up out of the New York City subway to find that all hell has broken loose: there’s gunfire and explosions everywhere, fires burning, mysterious troopers — terrorists? — in black rounding up residents (or killing them), no signs of NYPD or any other legitimate authorities. Terrified, baffled, and on the verge of becoming a victim of the sudden lawlessness, Lucy teams up with reluctant veteran Stupe (Dave Bautista: Blade Runner 2049) as they both attempt to get to safety… if such a place exists. It’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista versus an entire Texas battalion in New York City in this all-out action thriller from the makers of Cooties and Stake Land.
Action movie stars don’t come much bigger than Dave Bautista, Drax from the smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy series, and the villainous Hinx from the latest James Bond film Spectre. Here, front and centre as Stupe, a take no prisoners ex-Marine on the warpath against a Texas militia invading New York, Bushwick establishes Bautista – soon to be seen in Blade Runner 2049 – as an action hero on a par with Vin Diesel and The Rock. A few years ago, Dave Bautista got into an argument with his agent. He wanted to turn the former WWE wrestler into a leading man, but didn’t want Bautista to take a role that required an Eastern European accent.
“I was really excited about it, and my agent hated it,” said Bautista. “When I asked why, he said: ‘Because if you do that, than you’re really just going to get stuck in this rut of being a character actor.’ And I said, ‘But I am a character actor. That’s what I want to be.”
It’s easy to understand where Bautista’s agent was coming from. Bautista’s a recognizable and extremely popular ex-wrestler with a mixed martial arts background and a physically imposing on-screen presence. There was a clear path for Bautista to become an action star. The problem was — that’s not what Bautista wanted.

Bushwick is intense. The thriller stars Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista as strangers who find themselves working together when their neighbourhood is suddenly attacked. The pair are trying to make their way to safety through a war zone with little knowledge of how or why their world suddenly imploded into all out war for survival.

For his first-ever film score, hip-hop artist Aesop Rock provides an exhilarating beat-heavy backdrop to Bushwick, the thriller directed by the Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, and starring Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista. “The score is gritty, emotional, unnerving and triumphant, taking us on a journey as we weave through the streets of Brooklyn,” the directors note. We had the opportunity to speak with Aesop Rock about scoring the film and bringing an added level of intensity to the thriller.
This movie was intense, following the amazing music in the opening credits, the film was void of music for more almost 20 minutes. Talk to us about some of the discussions that limited the music.
There were many phases. There were times when there were stripped-down drums playing in some of that stuff, and various other pieces were tried. I think ultimately their decision to leave the top of the movie...

Brittany Snow fights for survival when apocalypse descends on Brooklyn, but the action plays out like a video game
It takes two-thirds of the film to find out why exactly the apocalypse has broken out in the ethnically diverse Bushwick, one of Brooklyn’s gentrifying neighbourhoods. “I’m from here,” insists Brittany Snow’s Lucy, a blond-haired, blue-eyed, button-nosed civil engineering student who just wants to get to grandma’s house. Still, she must (and does) duck and dodge the masked snipers that spray bullets in her direction – like Lara Croft meets Taylor Swift, flanked by burly ex-soldier Stupe (Dave Bautista). Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s action thriller inhabits a videogame perspective, keeping Lucy in frame and moving with her as though she’s an avatar we’re operating. A neat trick, but it gets old fast, much like the constant cacophony of Call of Duty-style gunfire. The...

One of the more exciting aspects of Avengers: Infinity War is the fact that the Guardians of the Galaxy will finally cross paths with the Avengers! Who will have the most banter with Star-Lord? What will Rocket think of Tony Stark’s tech? Will Groot and Hulk be best friends? Who will be more clueless, Thor or Drax? The possibilities are endless, but unfortunately the length of the film will not be.

Ever since I saw Cooties in 2014 and fought with our founding editor in order to review the film (I lost out, of course) I’ve been anxious to see how Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott would follow up on their delightfully offbeat take on genre cinema. And over the last few years, said founding editor and the partners in his production company helped Milott and Murnion shepherd a high-concept apocalypse piece set in one of the sections of Brooklyn. Bushwick begins with a couple walking in a subway station -- I believe locals call them “trains”, but that’s just one of the faults of New York life -- and having a pleasant enough conversation about nothing in particular. The first sense something interesting is happening...

In the wake of what seems to be an unending spread of global radicalization, whether it takes the form of race riots in Charlottesville, U.S.A., or a terrorist attack in Spain, a film about a military force laying siege to a Brooklyn neighborhood as Texas and other states secede from the U.S. seems less like a dystopian fiction than it does a frightening plausibility. When the film had its world premiere at Sundance early this year, ScreenAnarchy’s Jason Gorber called Bushwick “A Provocative and Chilling Picture of America in Crisis”. Suffice it to say, recent developments have not made the statement any less true. Other than for its almost painful topicality, however, Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott’s Bushwick also emerges as something of a must-see...

A timely premise and some smart visuals aren’t enough to fully rescue this pedestrian thriller in which Texan secessionists spark civil war in the Us
Some dodgy acting and iffy line-readings put a downer on this action thriller with a very topical slant. It’s about a new civil war – with Texas leading a secessionist movement – heralded by an all-out invasion of Bushwick in Brooklyn, New York.
Brittany Snow plays Lucy, a college student visiting her grandmother who is terrified to find herself in a war zone. There is only one person who can protect her: a huge combat veteran called Stupe (Dave Bautista), who has a painful backstory.

In Bushwick, New York City resembles a militaristic wasteland. We’re to believe Texas has formed a Southern pact and is leading a new Civil War in the name of secession. It’s a scary reality that brings to light recent current events driven by unjust animosity. A made-up Brooklyn invasion and actual Dallas sniper shooting are horrifyingly similar topics, so you’d think Nick Damici and Graham Reznick’s script would be fueled with warnings, or anger, or revelations. You’d think there’d be something more to raging fires and black-suited militants. You would think – but that’s not the case. Crumbling skylines and Red-Dawn-meets-Purge vibes can only get you so far.

Imagine a Civil War movie that begins as follows: Some ordinary American in 1861 is just wandering the road, perhaps idly wondering if mankind will ever invent some means of individual transportation speedier than the horse, when suddenly all hell breaks loose. Musket fire everywhere, cannons booming, soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms skewing people with sabers and stabbing them with bowie knives. The protagonist is understandably terrified, but also utterly bewildered. Who are these killers? What the hell is going on?
That’s roughly the premise that Bushwick asks viewers to swallow, except that it’s transposed to the present day. Emerging from an oddly deserted Brooklyn subway platform, grad student Lucy (Brittany Snow) unexpectedly finds herself in a war zone, and spends the rest of the movie desperately trying to stay alive as others are being gunned down on the streets by some sort of paramilitary force.
