A new documentary from Investigation Discovery is exposing the culture of abuse within a group of Christian churches associated with the Duggar family. Let Us Prey: A Ministry of Scandals examines a pattern of predatory behavior within the Independent Fundamental Baptist churches and the efforts of survivors to find justice. The four-part docuseries premieres Friday, Nov. 24.
‘Let Us Prey’ exposes Ifb ‘secrets and violence’
Although the name might not be familiar to many viewers, the Independent Fundamental Baptists are a powerful force within American Christianity. Since its founding in the 1950s, the Ifb “has evolved into one of the dominant religious forces in the United States today with an estimated 8 million believers spread out over 6,000 churches across the country,” according to ID. The loosely affiliated group has a “cheery and virtuous exterior.” However, that masks the “depraved secrets and violence that have existed within their churches for decades.”

When I first heard about Darlin’ I was immediately interested in seeing it. Why? Well… Pollyanna McIntosh is an actress I’ve been a fan of since her incredible performance in the Lucky McKee film The Woman back in 2011. Since then I’ve enjoyed her in numerous roles, from White Settlers to to Let Us Prey, and even her role as Jadis in The Walking Dead before I threw in the towel on that show. Seeing McIntosh go behind the camera for the first time here was something that intrigued me greatly.

The gothic has always been the cornerstone and mainstay of horror film: that place that is supposed to be the most secure and welcoming - one's home - is suddenly dangerous and uninviting. Irish director Brian O'Malley (Let Us Prey) returns to these horror roots for an update on gothic tropes with a healthy infusion of social-historic drama. Twin siblings Rachel (Charlotte Vega) and Edward (Bill Milner) live in an isolated mansion in the Irish countryside (the ancestral home of their English forebearers who arrived from the UK). They have to follow certain rules in order to keep strange monsters at bay. Reaching their 18th birthday, Rachel starts to chafe against this confinement; on top of this, their solicitor Bermingham (David Bradley) says they are...

I liked enough of 2014’s Let Us Prey, the debut feature from Irish filmmaker Bryan O’Malley, to want to see whatever he would do next. In addition to conjuring up some truly nightmarish imagery, O’Malley displayed an incredible talent for stylized visuals and slow-burn pacing. His follow-up film, this year’s The Lodgers, is a totally different kind of horror movie, but one which again showcases many of O’Malley’s same gifts as a visual storyteller.
This gothic ghost story, set in early 20th century Ireland, follows a pair of orphaned twin siblings, Rachel and Edward (Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner), who are more or less prisoners of the mansion they inherited and now inhabit alone. They live by a strict set of rules that keep them confined indoors, lest invoking the anger of the Lodgers, the ghosts who share their cursed home. As their eighteenth birthday...

While most horror films of today struggle to out-shock one another, thankfully there are still auteurs like director, Brian O'Malley (Let Us Prey), who delight in a slower, more gracefully paced approach to eeriness. Like a rich work of gothic literature, O'Malley's The Lodgers weaves a tale of dark ancestry and a damning heritage inflicted upon two innocents, nestled in the woods outside the view of prying townsfolk eyes. Set in rural-Ireland of the 1920s, The Lodgers coops two twin teenagers, Rachel and Edward (played by Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner) inside an awe-striking mansion, withering with decay and neglect. Gone are the caretakers and parental figures who bestowed life and education onto the enfants-terribles. All that remains is a sinister presence that haunts their...

I followed my first feature, 2014’s “Let Us Prey,” with a Gothic horror fable called “The Lodgers,” which follows two orphaned twins named Rachel and Edward who inhabit a crumbling manor in 1920s rural Ireland. “The Lodgers” — which premiered last week at the Toronto Film Festival — was made on very tight schedule, with 210 scenes shot in 22 days. In Ireland on low- to medium-films, shoot days are a strict 10 hours. If you go beyond that you owe the time back to the crew. Despite that time pressure, “The Lodgers” was an absolute pleasure to shoot. And that’s...

Brian O'Malley's follow up to Let Us Prey is a gothic thriller about a crumbling mansion and the twins who inhabit it but The Lodgers (trailer) is also a story about family legacies and living with the sins, perceived or otherwise, of family.
In celebration of the movie's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival today, we thought we'd look back at some of our favourite movies about family, most of them dysfunctional, and how the members of those families either dealt with or tried to escape their history.

Epic Pictures is developing a Gothic horror story, with Irish director Brian O'Malley (Let Us Prey). The film is titled The Lodgers. And, the film centrally stars Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner. These two actors play siblings. They are trapped in an old Irish house and they must follow a few rules, to keep supernatural powers at bay. These rules are discussed in a behind-the-scenes clip, which can be found here. For more on the story, Rachel (Vega) and Edward (Milner) reside on a "crumbling family estate." At night, a supernatural presence emerges from within the home. The twins must follow a strict set of rules. Otherwise, their lives are put in jeopardy. But, Rachel has become enamored with an ex-soldier, leaving Edward vulnerable. The behind-the-scenes clip reveals more of the film and the rules. Yesterday, amid a crush of sweaty people desperate for last-minute props, I visited a local Halloween superstore with my daughter, looking for a Pikachu mask. Well, there wasn’t much to choose from in the Cute Kid Division. But this particular hall of Halloween hell definitely had the adult sensibility covered. Of course there were the usual skimpy or otherwise outrageous costumes for purchase —ladies, you can dress up like a sexy Kim Kardashian-esque vampire out for a night of Hollywood clubbing, and gents, how about impressing all the sexy Kim Kardashian vampires at your party by dressing up like a walking, talking matched set of cock and balls! It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for fake tools of terror, but it seems there’s been a real advance in sophistication in the market for “Leatherface-approved” (I swear) chainsaws with moving parts and authentic revving noises,...

Let Us Prey is a film released in 2014 staring Liam Cunningham, Pollyanna McIntosh and was directed by Brian O’ Malley.
McIntosh plays PC. Rachel Heggie, who is a cop starting a new job at an out of the way Scottish police station. Upon Heggie’s arrival at the station, it looks like it’s going to be a boring shift. However, things begin to get weird as the jail fills up with an assortment of ne’er do wells who have much more beneath the surface than the crimes that landed them in their cells. This sets the stage for the arrival of a mysterious stranger - thought to have been involved in a motor vehicle accident earlier in the film - who stirs the pot and boils up mayhem for everyone involved.

Stars: Liam Cunningham ,Pollyanna McIntosh, Sophie Stephanie Farmer, Niall Greig Fulton | Written by David Cairns, Fiona Watson | Directed by Brian O’Malley
Despite a promising opening and some interesting thematic concepts, Scottish horror Let Us Prey quickly goes off the rails veering into sloppy bog-standard genre territory. Brian O’Malley’s feature sees the workings of a small Inveree police station flipped upside down when a mysterious figure (Liam Cunningham) arrives bringing madness and bloodshed with him.
The rich Gothic opening sees the a figure in a long cloak standing beside roaring waves and masses of shrieking crows. Initially reminiscent of Hitchcock’s The Birds, Let Us Prey is a film that wears its influences on its sleeve with hints of Assault on Precinct 13 and The Silence of the Lambs all suggested, yet sadly this is a film that pales in comparison to these features.
