Somehow achieving new heights weekly
rmmil29 January 2023
Of cringing. That's what the review headline is in reference to, new heights of me cringing.

I was initially a big fan of Sarah Sherman's brand of weird comedy, but she veers from kooky to cringey far too quickly.

The "rollercoaster stuck face skit", was just plain stupid. I know Gen Z comedy tends to be repetitive and bland, but this one was just new levels of dumb.

I paused the "Jake from State Farm" skit 2 seconds into it to tell my partner my prediction for how it would go, and I was 100% correct. Every single time a black man hosts SNL they do a joke skit where Heidi Gardner is having an affair with him. Every. Single. Time.

This series has become so cringing and predictable in everything it does. Weekend Update is the only part with any semblance of humor because the jokes actually have punchlines.

A big fault in Sarah Sherman's comedy is that her punchlines happen at the front of her jokes. No understanding of comedic timing or how comedy fundamentally works.

This is a bad show now.

Body Shaming, Stereotypes, Talentless Host -- This Episode Has It All Except Laughs
bkkaz29 January 2023
Last week's SNL with Aubrey Plaza was actually kinda good. Surprising not because of Plaza, who is funny, but because of SNL, which is not.

But this weeks' episode just plain stunk, falling back on dumb skits and jokes that were on the level of a junior high school skit. From a bland host to obvious jokes to skits that just went nowhere, a train wreck.

The one about dubbing voices for a videogame has been done already. The one about the morning show people who'd been stuck on a roller coaster had a couple sight gags but went on way too long. The one about a stripper with a Shemp Howard haircut wasn't funny once but kept going anyway. Why does Heidi Gardner think she's funny?

Some of the skits were just weird. One about a male confidence seminar turns into some of the worst body shaming you can think of with racist overtones about common features among some races but not others. I thought we live in an age where all that's to be discouraged?

This was a terrible episode. I laughed maybe twice, and both times were during the roller coaster skit.

CRACKED: The Ultimate Crack

Nothing to see here. Move along.

This episode of New York City's twin huge embarrassments, right alongside the failing fish wrapper*, could barely be considered a legit TV show. It filled an empty time slot on the NBC roster and that was the extent of it.

Seeing a venerable "live" broadcast die right in front of your eyes is traumatic for anyone who has been a loyal fan. Now brain dead beyond any true hope of resuscitation, this former staple of weekend viewing must be put to rest with as much dignity as humanely possible.

Yes, I'm afraid it's true.

The time has come to pull the plug.

RIP SNL

"Talk amongst yourselves." ~ Linda Richman.

*The term "fish wrapper" refers simply to newspaper traditionally used to wrap fresh fish at a neighborhood market or a greasy batch of fish and chips from a local pub. The implication or subtext is that the pulp daily has no use otherwise.
