I really am enjoying this show, but there is a lingering problem that I am not sure is going to resolve itself.

When this show is Jimmy and Paul, it is phenomenal. The chemistry that Ford and Segal have is unmatched, and it's a joy to see them together. The plot with Jimmy and his daughter is truly compelling, and is a storyline that I love to see unravel. The heart of the show is that dynamic along with Paul.

The show really loses me when it strays from that. The side characters are enjoyable, but when I spend 12-15 minutes of a 30 minute episode with side characters. Liz and Gaby are definitely good characters, but it's not a dynamic that I want to spend much time with, when Jimmy and Alice are really the heart of the show.

Obviously I still really love this show, and I look forward to every episode, but I wish we could maintain more focus on the characters that the show is built on.

Warning: Spoilers
Jimmy needs to push back his guilt over checking out to finally lay down the law with others, but he was out of line being so angry with Brian for making a reasonable request. I personally wouldn't want my officiant having a meltdown at my wedding. Jimmy needs to learn how to be stricter with Alice, despite having failed her for the past year. It feels repetitive, but we are steadily going somewhere and I'm looking forward to seeing where Jimmy's journey takes him by the end of the season. Can he finally get his daughter to forgive him? Jimmy and Gaby try to have an honest conversation with Alice about what happened between them, but she doesn't want to hear it. Paul encourages her to cut Jimmy some slack, making her feel even more alone. Brian and Paul help Jimmy find Alice when she sneaks out to go to a garden party and then to a college guy's dorm room. On the way to the party, Brian tells Jimmy he doesn't want him to officiate because he fell apart at the engagement party. Jimmy reacts defensively, but Paul instructs him to be harsher when people hurt him. Jimmy decides to be honest with Brian and ground Alice. Episode 8 of Shrinking deals with the aftermath of last week's events and is filled with sarcasm, wit, and heart. Jimmy listens to his patient Grace (Heidi Gardner) complain about her abusive, coffee-obsessed husband, whom she left in the series' premiere. Despite their reconciliation, Grace is still unhappy and wants to "boop" him. Immy encourages his patient to use a "pattern interrupt" to get out of bad habits and prevent the same situations from happening over and over again. He also warns her of the consequences of not following his advice. Shrinking 's wisdom comes from Paul, who is a mentor to both Alice and Jimmy. In episode 8, Jimmy and Gaby tell Alice about the night they spent together, and Alice reacts negatively. Paul encourages her to remember that it's not all about her, and ultimately, Jimmy, Paul and Brian team up to save the day. Gaby convinces Liz and Sean to accompany her to her ex husband Nico's art show, despite knowing it won't be good for her mental health. All of the characters are given difficult situations to handle in episode 8, and learn something about themselves in the process. Shrinking teaches us that our past mistakes don't deprive us of the right to be upset at others when they wrong us.
