DS June Lenker listens into an anonymous 999 call. The woman states that she has been attacked by her boyfriend. He is violent and claims to have killed another woman some years earlier.
Someone else was convicted and is serving a prison sentence for 24 years for that woman's death. She does not give the name of her boyfriend to the police.
June does some research and comes across the name of Errol Mathis. A man convicted of killing Adelaide Burrowes in 2012.
DCI Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) was the investigating officer. He was seen in the opening scene moonlighting as a chauffeur and looking unhappy about it. He is also not too pleased when June shows up with her story.
Criminal Record aims to be sinister and unpredictable. The first episode is less about whether the wrong man was jailed. More a hostile relationship between June Lenker and Hegarty.
June feels the tension with Hegarty casually dismissing Mathis. It reeks of petty racism to her.
The first episode simmered well. It looks to be more psychological at the moment but you hope the Hegarty character is more layered.
