In one of my all-time favorite films, Ghost World, there is an exchange between the two lead characters at the lame party celebrating their recent high school graduation that I think is an apt description of the two ways I tend to feel about low-budget horror:
“This is so bad, it’s almost good.”
“This is so bad, it’s gone all the way past good and back to bad again.”
Goofy, gory B-movie horror tends to fall into one of those two buckets. It is either so fantastically, over-the-top bad that it becomes almost good (or at least entertaining), or it goes so far that it passes that very fine line by and becomes just bad. Gingerclown, alas, is one of the latter. A shame, given that it boasts a cast that includes cult all-stars like Tim Curry and Brad Dourif, not to mention some of the most outrageous...

Gingerclown might be the strangest damn horror movie I review this year, a fate I valiantly accepted after discovering that rookie director Balázs Hatvani created the very first 3D horror comedy in Hungarian history. Hatvani’s ambitions are sky-high, but a horrid production quickly drags Gingerclown down to an Earthly realm filled with hammy acting, perverse puppeteering, and genre sensibilities that can’t decide between being a Gothic house of horrors or a slapstick comedy gag.
Filing Hatvani’s film under “horror” is an insult to movies that begrudgingly attempt a scare or two, even when laughs are at a premium, as this haunted attraction isn’t worth a lick in the terror department. With each passing moment of high-school-crushing and laughably inferior showmanship, the voices of Tim Curry and Brad Dourif are lost amidst stumbling villains with zero mobility. Cussing teacups, Eastern-European-Californians, shoddy costumes – what the hell did I just watch?...

The 2014 Academy Award nominations were announced this week and the relative snubbing of Captain Phillips, Saving Mr Banks, Inside Llewyn Davis and GI Joe: Retaliation is going to have us all cursing the Academy and discussing the actual quality of American Hustle until about May.
Nonetheless one of the great tragedies of my life is that I cannot actually watch absolutely everything ever that comes out and try as I might to rectify this, there simply are not enough hours in the day. There are a couple of films available on the streaming services that have just been nominated for academy awards this week which I have not had a chance to see thus far.
Those films are; The Square, nominated for Best Documentary Feature and now available on Netflix. The Square is about the uprising in Egypt in early 2011 that made the news around the world and the circumstances around this.

Some sad news is coming our way today, but it does appear to have a happy outcome. Beloved actor Tim Curry is recovering after suffering a major stroke at his home Thursday night in Los Angeles. The British star, 67, is said to be "doing great" following the collapse.
Curry, of course, rose to fame as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in the 1975 cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show while many horror fans credit his performance as Pennywise in "It" for causing a life-long fear of clowns. Most recently he appeared in Gingerclown, Burke and Hare, and the "Alice" TV mini-series.
Few details were available about his stroke last night, but sources close to the actor refused suggestions that it had made it difficult for him to speak. "Tim is doing great," said his longtime Los Angeles agent Marcia Hurwitz. "He absolutely can speak and is recovering at this time and in great humour,...

Balazs Hatvani's new comedy horror 'Gingerclown' has only gone and conjured itself up a new hilarious trailer filled with plentiful amounts of 80's schlock. The 3D feature which revolves around a group of typically 80's horror teenagers wandering around an abandoned amusement park which plays home to 'Gingerclown' and his mostrous buddies. And when you need a sinister clown type character whom better to recruit than Brit actor Tim Curry ('The Rocky Horror Picture Show') who turned Stephen King's Pennywise into the terrifying icon of horror that we all fear to this very day. Genre faves Brad Dourif ('Child's Play') and Lance Henriksen ('Aliens') also offer their voices to the project along with Sean Young ('Ace Ventura: Pet Detective') and ex-'Police Academy' vocal talent Michael Winslow. Head below for the full plot synopsis plus the new trailer.

Another new trailer for the latest horror comedy coming our way, Gingerclown 3D, is home to a couple of new bits of never before seen footage, though after you watch it that may not necessarily apply anymore. Funny how things work sometimes.
Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show) voices "Gingerclown," while Brad Dourif (Child’s Play) voices "Worm Creature," Lance Henriksen (Aliens) as "Braineater," Michael Winslow (Police Academy) as "Stomachcrumble," and Sean Young (Blade Runner) voices the leggy "Nelly the Spiderwoman." Balázs Hatvani directs.
Synopsis:
1983: A group of high school students are having a great time near Hollywood Hills at the weekend when they bump into the Loser from their school, Sam, who’s just on his way home. Sam would do anything in order to get Jenny’s attention, one of prettiest girls in school. Unfortunately she’s also the girlfriend of the school’s bully, Biff, the quarterback of the football team.

I honestly cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of director Balazs Hatvani’s upcoming horror flick “Gingerclown 3D”. The film combines several of my favorite genre elements, including abandoned carnivals and Tim Curry. What’s cool about the latest trailer — which you can find embedded below, by the way — is that we finally get a good look at the monsters, and I must say that I’m not disappointed in the least. Now, someone get this thing Stateside distribution as soon as humanly possible so I can check it out. Pretty please. You know you want to. Unfamiliar with this title? The first full-length trailer for the upcoming horror/comedy “Gingerclown 3D” is nearly two minutes in length, yet it gives up nothing in regards to the picture’s impossibly intriguing cast of creatures. Are they keeping the good stuff for the second trailer? Perhaps. Regardless of the lack of monster-related madness, the clip is still worth investigating, especially if you’ve been following the production as closely as I have. I particularly enjoyed how the trailer’s narrator boldly declares that “Gingerclown” is in the tradition of 80′s-style horror. Way to state the obvious! In case you were wondering, the film stars Erin Hayes, Ashley Lloyd Luke, Michael Cannell-Griffiths and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show) voices “Gingerclown,” while Brad Dourif (Child’s Play) voices “Worm Creature,” Lance Henriksen (Aliens) as “Braineater,” Michael Winslow (Police Academy) as “Stomachcrumble,” and Sean Young (Blade Runner) as “Nelly the Spiderwoman.” With a cast like that,...

You probably know Sean Young best as the Replicant known as Rachael from Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner, or you may know her as Kate Gekko from Wall Street or as Lois Einhorn from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but suffice to say, unless you followed her spat with Diving Bell and the Butterfly helmer Julian Schnabel back in 2008, after which she landed herself a reality role on "Celebrity Rehab", you haven't heard much of her since.
Well, in an interesting turn of events, Young showed up on "The Late Show with David Letterman" essentially asking for work from the "big boys" as I guess roles on "The Young and the Restless" and in low budget film such as Gingerclown and The Black Dove aren't living up to her time spent with Scott and Oliver Stone. Understandable really, but this video footage of her Letterman performance is sort of sad.

A strangely-paced trailer for Gingerclown 3D hit the web today giving us a better look at writer-director Balázs Hatvani's "homage" to '80s horror-comedies. Tim Curry provides the vocal work for the titular villain. But don't expect to see the creature in this trailer...or co-stars Lance Henriksen, Brad Dourif, Michael Winslow or Sean Young either.
