Exclusive: Virgil Films has acquired worldwide rights to Surviving The Silence, a documentary revealing a long-hidden story from the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” era.
Directed and produced by Cindy L. Abel, the film revisits the case of Army hero Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer, who was expelled by Col. Patsy Thompson because she was a lesbian. What was previously unknown is that Thompson was also a lesbian. The way she handled the military trial, however, led to Cammermeyer’s re-instatement via federal court and eventual change in military policy.
The “don’t ask don’t tell” policy was instituted by the Clinton Administration in 1994. While it was intended as a progressive measure, the updated rule prohibited gay, bisexual or transgender people from speaking about or disclosing same-sex relationships during their time in the armed services. It faced numerous legal challenges and ultimately was phased out in...

Exclusive: Virgil Films has acquired the North American rights to Far Out West: Inside California’s Kerista Commune, a documentary about a decades-long experiment in communal living.
The film will get a virtual release this fall, followed by a rollout across digital platforms.
Virgil’s description the film sums up a tale that fits with the recent attention for the multiple Nxium doc series and Netflix’s Wild Wild Country. “In the early 1970s,” it reads, “25 young, free spirits found each other in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and formed the Kerista Commune. For two decades, they lived as one family, loving freely, raising children together, and making millions selling Apple computers. But if the alternative society they built was fantastically alluring, it was also fragile, and a quarter century after they voted to dissolve their commune, the former members are still debating what their experiment can teach us about human nature,...

Exclusive: Fatima Ali, a viewer favorite on Top Chef who died of bone cancer in 2019, is among a handful of subjects of documentary Her Name Is Chef.
Virgil Films & Entertainment will premiere the film in virtual cinemas March 26 before a digital HD release on April 27 and a DVD rollout on May 11.
The film examines gender equality in the restaurant business through interviews conducted by Leia Gaccione, herself a chef. Along with Ali, the film features Elizabeth Falkner, Hillary Sterling, Esther Choi, Juliet Masters and Caroline Schiff. Instead of the more straightforward look at female chefs initially planned, Her Name Is Chef took on a different shape in light of Ali’s illness and death. While it is not a solo portrait of Ali, her legacy is woven through much of the film.

Exclusive: Virgil Films has acquired rights in U.S. and Canada rights to The Blech Effect, which traces the singular path of biotech entrepreneur David Blech.
The documentary’s director is David Greenwald, a seasoned editor who directed the short film My Father’s House. The acquisition deal was struck by Virgil Films president Joe Amodei, Eastgate Films’ Ronna Wallace and Jonathan Gray of Gray Schwartz.
Blech became known as the “king of biotech” after his small firm skyrocketed to the heights of Wall Street and pioneered the model of financing emerging medical solutions. “The Blech Effect” became a term for the way that investment capital, technology and medical science combined to explosive effect.
Although he did not have any training in science, Blech worked as a stockbroker to support his ambition to become a songwriter. At 24, Blech decided to go into business with his brother, Isaac. They hustled and...

Virgil Films has acquired the U.S. and Canadian digital rights to Laddie: The Man Behind the Movies, a feature-length look at Alan Ladd Jr. directed by his daughter, Amanda Ladd Jones.
The studio boss and producer is responsible for some of Hollywood’s all-time biggest titles, including Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, Police Academy, Braveheart, Thelma & Louise and Young Frankenstein. The film features interviews with George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Affleck, Ron Howard, Morgan Freeman, Mel Brooks, Richard Donner.
As Deadline noted in a 2017 post, Ladd had a low-key style and was a man of few words relative to the industry’s chattering norms. When he was just 37, having grown up in the industry as the son of a popular Hollywood actor, Ladd became head of production at 20th Century Fox. Before long, he had green-lit several films that would cement his legacy.

Behind-the-scenes documentary 40 Years of Rocky: The Birth of a Classic will enter the digital on-demand ring on June 9.
Virgil Films & Entertainment is releasing the film. It is directed by Derek Wayne Johnson, who profiled the director of Rocky in his 2017 film John G. Avildsen: King of the Underdogs. Avildsen, who died in 2017, captured his own 8mm footage during pre-production and shooting of his 1976 Best Picture Oscar winner. It forms the basis of the new documentary, which is narrated by screenwriter and star Sylvester Stallone.
Lloyd Kaufman, who would go on to run Troma Entertainment, home of B-movies like The Toxic Avenger, also shot some of the footage seen in the new documentary during his stint as Rocky‘s production manager. Kaufman’s footage has never previously been seen, Virgil says. The footage shows makeup tests, boxing choreography sessions and other moments involving Stallone and co-stars Carl Weathers and Talia Shire.

One of the bigger documentary sub-genre booms in recent years has been in the area of food docs exploring and/or decrying what we eat, the way we eat and why we probably shouldn’t be eating it. Films like Food, Inc., Diet for a New America, Forks Over Knives, King Corn, and Super Size Me have all taken a stab at educating Americans on what we put in our mouths. More importantly, they’ve tried to educate us on what we’re putting in our children’s mouths. But if there’s been one constant through the years it’s this: America just doesn’t give a shit. The latest film hoping against hope to change the nation’s lethargic stupidity and penchant for slowburn child abuse is Fed Up from director Stephanie Soechtig and producer Katie Couric. The film addresses the already established problem — Americans are getting fatter and sicker — but instead of simply saying...

The good news just keeps coming for Hollywood sweethearts Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, who welcomed their first baby back in March. Bell proposed to Shepard on Wednesday, following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, and now the pair have been named PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2013.
"I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with -- dogs and cats, for example -- from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat," said "Veronica Mars" star Bell in a PETA press release.
A vegetarian for many years, Bell eventually decided to go vegan along with Shepard, who "converted" last January after watching the documentary "Forks Over Knives," according to Playboy.

Pandora’S Promise is the new documentary that asks viewers to take another look at nuclear power. The title refers to the thinking that the splitting of the atom opened the mythical Pandora’s box and unleashed unspeakable evil upon the world, particularly with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that helped end World War II. After that, the fears of fallout inspired the gigantic monster craze of the 1950′s (Them, Godzilla King Of Monsters), later scientists then began to look into a way to make nuclear power into a feasible energy source. Which then begat several more concerns that the media exploited. Surprisingly the film makers include clips from The China Syndrome and TV’s “The Simpsons” with eternal boob Homer manning the safety monitors at the Springfield power plant. But Promise consists mainly of interviews with former opponents of nuclear power as they explain why they changed their minds.

San Francisco (AP) — When Steve Jobs adopted "think different" as Apple's mantra in the late 1990s, the company's ads featured Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, Amelia Earhart and a constellation of other starry-eyed oddballs who reshaped society.
Nolan Bushnell never appeared in those tributes, even though Apple was riffing on an iconoclastic philosophy he embraced while running video game pioneer Atari in the early 1970s. Atari's refusal to be corralled by the status quo was one of the reasons Jobs went to work there in 1974 as an unkempt, contemptuous 19-year-old. Bushnell says Jobs offended some Atari employees so much that Bushnell eventually told Jobs to work nights when one else was around.
Bushnell, though, says he always saw something special in Jobs, who evidently came to appreciate his eccentric boss, too. The two remained in touch until shortly before Jobs died in October 2011 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

★★★☆☆ "The results were astonishing." This is, by far, the most recurrent turn of phrase used in Lee Fulkerson's profound analysis on the western diet, Forks Over Knives (2011), released on DVD this week in the UK. Fortunately, rather than being simply a lazy, unvaried attempt at proving minor point, Fulkerson's collection of scientific data and dietary figures truly is beyond astonishing. Unlike similar protein vilifying entries such as Shaun Monson's Earthlings (2005) or Robert Kenner's Food Inc. (2008), Fulkerson has ignored shock tactics in turn for permitting alarming statistics to be the real food for thought, whilst suitably captivating his audience.

Next month, Kristin Bauer van Straten, better known as True Blood’s Pam, will leave for Kenya, where she’ll spend four weeks filming a documentary about the effort to stop elephant ivory and rhino horn poaching — a cause dear to her South African husband’s family. His grandfather was a professor of physiology who helped treat, relocate, and save wildlife. Just as the experts need help to keep elephants and rhinos from going extinct, Bauer van Straten needs help to fund her film project.
With 19 days left on her Kickstarter campaign, she’s reached roughly two-thirds of her $30,000 goal.

Kristen Bell has decided to take the leap into veganism. The actress, who has been a vegetarian since she was 11-years-old, credits watching the Forks Over Knives documentary for her diet switch.
"It's more about the healthy benefits than the ethics," Bell said. "But it's compounded by the fact that I love animals and feel better not eating them."
Bell has since started her very own organic garden.
"There's cilantro, sage, baby greens. Carrots, broccoli, kale, potatoes, cauliflower. There are strawberries. Romaine, butter lettuce, thyme... Oh, the spinach is coming up real nice."
Bell is engaged to actor Dax Shepard who made the switch to being a vegan earlier this year after watching the same film. Forks Over Knives has also been credited to making Ozzy Osbourne, Russell Brand, Eliza Dushku and Jason Mraz for embracing a vegan lifestyle.

Singer Jason Mraz is a big fan of his vegan diet -- he recently said that the meat-free lifestyle has made him a better lover. In a blog post on Thursday, he wrote the following:
I've also been on a pretty strict plant-based diet for 4 months now -- feeling stronger, fitter, healthier and more productive. I ride longer distances on my bike, can do more pull-ups than ever, and my brain seems to have a larger capacity for new projects, problem solving, songwriting and fielding random questions. My health and strength make me a better performer and all that combined gives me more confidence to go out in the world and shine my light. It also makes me a lot better in bed.
In the blog post, Mraz also recommends that readers view the documentary "Forks Over Knives," calling it "a life-changer." He indicates that we can get a day's...

London, Oct 27: Ozzy Osbourne, who is famous for eating a bat, has revealed that he has now become a vegan.
The former Black Sabbath member said that he was inspired to change his diet after watching a documentary about the benefits of not eating meat.
"My assistant showed me a video called Forks Over Knives about cutting out meat and dairy products so I thought, 'I'll give this a shot,'" the Daily Express quoted the 62-year-old rocker as saying.
The "Prince of Darkness" also believes the change has given him a new lease of life.
"I feel better about myself, you know?
"I go on binges. That's.

Ozzy Osbourne wants to get healthy and is trying out a new vegan diet to help him get there. Just like Russell Brand, the Price of Darkness said the Forks Over Knives documentary pushed him to make the change.
“My assistant showed me a video called Forks and Knives (sic) or something, about... meat and dairy products, so I thought, ‘I’ll give this a shot!’” Osbourne said during a visit to his wife Sharon's show, The Talk. “I feel Ok actually, I feel better about myself, you know? I go on binges… That’s the reason why I decided to cut meat out and dairy because I’ve limited what I can have because when you’re on the road and you’re traveling, you grab buns and… burgers are everywhere… so now I’ve just narrowed the margin."
The singer said he doesn't know if he'll stick to the vegan diet forever,...

Russell Brand has made the change from being a vegetarian to being a vegan. The comedian credits the documentary Forks Over Knives for his decision.
“I’m now vegan, goodbye eggs, hello Ellen,” Brand wrote on his Twitter account, referring to well-known vegan, Ellen DeGeneres.
Forks Over Knives looks at veganism as a way to counteract disease and overall illness.
“The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes,” reads the Forks Over Knives website. “Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments – while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.”...

Sometimes hitting the multiplex just isn’t in the cards. That’s when cable, the web and streaming step in to provide an instant movie fix. But how to separate the wheat from the chaff? I’m happy to help; every week I’ll pick a flick and see if it’s worth your time. This week it’s the documentary “Forks Over Knives”.
The Story: This documentary takes a cold, hard look at how Americans eat, and how what we decide to shove into our gaping maw affects how crappy we feel. And, how if we switch things around, how the food we put into our bodies could possibly make us feel better, and reverse health problems. Wait, so Ding-Dongs and grape soda aren’t good for me?
The Good: Tons of research went into this documentary, and it’s covered in a way that keeps viewers interested. Forks Over Knives...

Title: Forks Over Knives Director: Lee Fulkerson Cast: Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., Matthew Lederman ‘Forks Over Knives’, from director Lee Fulkerson, fashions itself a hip, savvy treatise on vegetarianism, sort of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ for the animal rights and beware-meat, health-conscious set. Instead, it’s a wearying polemic that tests the patience of even those who might be inclined to agree with it. Fulkerson takes as his two chief crusading subjects biochemist T. Colin Campbell and Cleveland-based surgeon Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Breaking out the science, they (and others) argue that the health benefits of eating vegetables are vast, and varied. Nipping a page from ‘Super Size Me”s Morgan Spurlock, Fulkerson...

Every few months ( usually around the rating sweeps periods ) your local TV new channel will do a feature story about how unhealthy we Americans are and will include shots of out of shape men and women on the street with their heads cropped out. Some of the comedy news show refer to them as the marching torsos. Well arriving in theatres just in time for the big Memorial Day weekend cook-offs is the new documentary Forks Over Knives, which does include those marchers in it’s promotion of a complete vegetarian diet. It’s an earnest examination, but can it convince the BBQ crowd to bypass the butcher shop?
This film is the work of Lee Fulkerson, a man who decides to get healthy after reading the alarming numbers on some recent blood work. He consults two dieticians who recommend a vegan diet. Fulkerson does further research by contacting two...

In December of 2008, I was hospitalized for high blood pressure. Through an unfortunate combination of medication swapping and poor lifestyle choices, my blood pressure had shot up into the danger zone for stroke. Though I follow the exercise philosophy that it's best not to run unless chased -- and only then by a bear or equivalent land shark -- I'm not exactly a sedentary individual, and I had been on a simple exercise regimen at that time. However, my blood pressure was so high that they couldn't give me the simple treadmill test to determine it, since it was spiking well into the 200s. Upon leaving the hospital, the ER doctors had given me six prescriptions -- for blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stress, etc. I went to my personal physician and said, "Look, I'm not taking this shit. And I'm also not taking this shit lying down. I just...

As a result, people may have died from diphtheria and typhoid and a host of other illnesses, but few suffered from cancers and heart disease. Things have changed with "progress," actually a regression from natural, healthful foods, to fast food, animal protein, and fat in general, which some believe have caused the current burgeoning of bypass surgery, chemotherapy and radiation-all of which could be greatly diminished if people followed a plant-based diet. Hippocrates would be dancing in his grave if he were able to see Lee Fulkerson's documentary, "Forks Over Knives," bearing a message that can be summed up in just a few words: Eat a plant-based diet.
