Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of Sherwood makes it clear that the wounds of the 1984 Miners strike have yet to heal.

Even though the former mining village of Ashfield voted in a Tory MP in the 2019 general election.

Writer James Graham was inspired by true incidents. Gary (Alun Armstrong) is still bitter with his fellow villagers who crossed the picket line. He is not afraid to shout scab at them.

One morning Gary is discovered dead, shot by an arrow.

DCS Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) is leading the investigation but it seems he may have to call on a policeman from London who was there back in 1984.

The first episode establishes the characters. St Clair gets an award and makes a speech. It makes him late for a wedding reception.

A true blue Tory who plans to be a councillor in Ashfield is getting married.

It seems Gary was estranged from his wife's family. No longer in talking terms with his sister in law, whose son is wandering around Sherwood forest playing with a bow and arrow.

Sherwood has a starry cast. It aims to be a modern day Our Friends in the North. It was a solid start but it has not yet hit bullseye.

A great start.

Residents of a small community are shaken when a local man is killed in the small hours.

It's a terrific start to the series, I wasn't sure the direction it was going to take, but it settles quickly, they quickly established a torn and wounded community.

As the end approaches, you're left in no doubt as to the direction, and there are definitely Broadchurch vibes, it's a six part whodunnit series.

A stellar cast assembled here, face after face, one of the best of them was shockingly bumped off, I did not expect that.

Alum Armstrong, David Morrissey, Lesley Manville, Joanne Frogatt, all fantastic.

Loved this first episode, 9/10.

Brilliant!

Being only half-way through the first episode, I have to say I am totally enamoured with this very, very good series. The story sucks you in, and the writing is absolutely first rate. The cinematography is amazing, and the setting is beautiful.

I also can't say enough about the cast! Sometimes, when you get this many well-known actors in one place, you can get something a little over the top, everyone wanting their time in the sun, making for a type of "forced" performance. But here, nothing seems forced, just a group of people, with complicated relationships, living their lives. And then MURDER.

I love UK murder mysteries, and this one is first rate!
