In our jaded present, it’s hard to imagine that there was once a time when film audiences took the “based on a true story” claim seriously. At this point, we’re all fully aware that artists sometimes have to embellish the truth in order to prove a point – and sometimes simply to entertain. In fact, the very act of creating a faux-reality to tell a story has since evolved into an artform in and of itself. While Ruggero Deodato is often credited with having invented Found Footage with 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust, the truth is that the genre and its current off-shoots have been slowly creeping into existence since the early days of cinema.
Pioneers like Benjamin Christensen (1922’s Häxan) and surrealist Luis Buñuel (1933’s Land Without Bread) were already experimenting with the idea of combining fact and fiction in convincing pseudo-documentaries, and that’s not even mentioning Orson Welles...

If there is one perpetually underappreciated horror monster out there, it’s Bigfoot. America’s most famous and recognizable cryptid has a wealth of films and literature devoted to it – but the elusive, hairy beast has rarely found itself in the horror spotlight among its brethren such as the vampire and werewolf.
Legends and myths of Bigfoot or Bigfoot-esque creatures span centuries and continents. Sasquatch, Yeti, Skunk Ape, and more all come to fall under the Bigfoot banner. Many states and regions across the country have their own version of the ape-like figure. Entire communities and groups of people can be found dedicated to tracking down and proving Bigfoot exists. The legend also comes with a decent score of individuals looking for a bit of attention by concocting pranks, hoaxes, and staging sighting.
The ongoing fascination with Bigfoot is easy to understand. It taps into our collective obsession with the unknown and the mysterious.

In 1946, the sleepy Texas town of Texarkana was rocked by a string of eight violent assaults, five of them resulting in murder. These crimes were later dubbed the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, named after the late-night timing of the attacks, and the unknown perpetrator become known as the “Phantom Killer.” It was truly a horrific crime and it’s no surprise that it’s one that would attract exploitation filmmakers. Filmmakers like Texarkana resident Charles B. Pierce.
Charles B. Pierce was, in every way, a product of gonzo drive-in exploitation. In the early ’70s, he rocked the grindhouse world with The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972), an absurd docudrama about a killer Sasquatch tormenting a sleepy village in Arkansas. It was his first true hit, successful enough to spawn a wave of Sasquatch-ploitation (another topic for another time), and kick-start his career. He’d go on to make a few more films in the years that followed,...

Look, bad things happen in the water. Kids pee in pools, ocean-dwelling, antisocial sharks eat... well, you know that story, and in the upcoming flick Dead Sea, an overgrown lamprey spends considerable time munching on lake-dipping, scantily-clad people’s bits. We caught up with the film’s star Devanny Pinn recently, who dished on the Brandon Slagle ‘blood and bikini’ feature. Written and directed by Slagle, who previously helmed the feature The Black Dahlia Haunting, Dead Sea stars (in addition to Pinn) Alexis Iacono (The Penny Dreadful Picture Show), Britt Griffith (Syfy's Ghost Hunters), James Duval (Donnie Darko), Chanel Ryan (Bad Kids Go to Hell), Candace Kita (Nip/Tuck), Tawny Amber Young and Kj McCormick, and revolves around a marine biologist who reluctantly returns to the town she grew up in, only to encounter the violent paranoia that has overtaken its locals as they prepare for the return of a...

Produced by Jesse Baget and written and directed by BC Furtney, Ruthless Pictures’ Werewolf Rises stars Melissa Carnell (Boggy Creek), Bill Oberst Jr. (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies), Matt Copko and Brian Berry (Peter Rottentail), and revolves around the character of Emma (Carnell), who after leaving for the big city returns years later (and with big problems) to her childhood home deep in the Arkansas mountains for some well needed rest, relaxation, and soul searching, only to find that her challenges have compounded. A bloodthirsty werewolf emerges from the woods to lay siege to the area, ravaging anything in its path, and revealing a sinister underworld that most never knew existed. With a full moon hanging over the area, Emma is plunged into a fight not only for her life, but for her very soul. Furtney talked to Fearnet about the film, which was filmed over the course of thirteen days last December.

Any time we get news that Bill Oberst, Jr., is in a new movie, we jump all over it; and once again that time has come as both Oberst and Melissa Carnell have joined the cast of Ruthless Pictures’ Werewolf Rises.
From the Press Release
Bill Oberst, Jr., has joined the cast of Ruthless Pictures’ Werewolf Rises. The film, written and directed by BC Furtney, tells the story of Emma, a small town girl who returns to her childhood home deep in the Arkansas mountains only to encounter a sinister underworld that most never knew existed, one populated by bloodthirsty werewolves.
Of his role in the film, Oberst says, "Since the days of Forrest J Ackerman's Famous Monsters, I've longed to play classic monster roles like Chaney's Wolf Man and Karloff's Monster. With Werewolf Rises, Jesse Baget and BC Furtney are giving me a chance to check one of those off my list.

This website was created several years ago to promote indie horror titles. But, every so often, a potential, terrible movie will come along; and then, this site acts more as a warning for horror fans. Brian T. Jaynes is probably this critic's least favourite director, in horror (and Larry Fessenden this critic's favourite). Jaynes has continued to create uninspiring and lackluster titles, for several years now. The first film this reviewer saw, by Jaynes, was Boggy Creek (2010). This film was a non-event, with very little happening in the film's eighty-seven minute run time (Boggy Creek Review). This film fan mistakenly believed that Jaynes would improve in his next title, Humans Versus Zombies (2011). Instead, the script for Humans Versus Zombies was very messy and the conclusion was an add-on (Humans Versus Zombies Review). Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. This film fanatic no longer reviews Jaynes' work,...

While promoting their new movie Lovely Molly here at the San Diego Comic-Con we sat down briefly with producers Mark Ordesky and Jane Fleming, and director Ed Sanchez to get the skinny on the upcoming Bigfoot flick Exists.
Our main focus in Exists was the creature itself which was designed by Spectral Motion," says producer Fleming. "It's basically the kind of effects work you'd find in a big budget movie in our small scale film. Actor Brian Steele plays our creature and he is amazing."
Sanchez shot the film found footage style, his first film of the like since Blair Witch Project and we've been assured that in the movie the creature will be anything but out of focus and hidden. "The creature is front and center and you see a lot it," says Ordesky. "Fans of bigfoot movies are going to be really happy with what we've created."

Humans Versus Zombies is a film based on a role playing game played on college campuses. The game involves Nerf guns, marshmallows and zombies chasing survivors. Rumour has it that the survivors have never won. The film version of the game is written and directed by Brian T. See that headline? Yeah, I'd totally go see that movie. Sasquatchploitation is near and dear to our hearts here at Dread Central, and we're always happy to let you know about a new Bigfoot movie stomping our way.
Hannover House has acquired the exclusive, worldwide production rights to Primate, a sci-fi thriller about a cryptozoological creature that terrorizes a team of Bigfoot researchers. The property was written by Andrew Sands (Airspeed, Beyond Loch Ness) and is planned for a USA production in September.
Although story and plot details have been intentionally quarantined, Hannover House reports that Primate suggests that the creatures may be part of a surviving tribe of Gigantopithecus hominoids. This early primate, currently known only through fossil findings, towered over 8 feet in height and has been pegged as a possible identity for the legendary Bigfoot sightings.
