The Kids Grow Up is an excellent documentary
Ewallerstein13 July 2011
The Kids Grow Up is an excellent documentary about some of lives harsher truths: growing up, moving on, and letting go. Filmmaker Doug Block lets us into his world as he prepares for his only daughter, Lucy, to head off to college. Block's struggle as he copes with her leaving and his fear of "the empty nest" make for a truly moving film that both parents and their kids can relate to. As someone who isn't particularly fond of documentaries, I found The Kids Grow Up to leave me just as touched as some of my favorite movies. It takes you back to a time where you wish everything was as thrilling as your daughter's first pair of earrings but also leaves you with the knowledge that the future holds so much potential, excitement, and tons more memories to look forward to. I definitely recommend The Kids Grow Up, watch it as a family and enjoy.

A bit uncomfortable but good

There is something about this filmmakers lens that makes me Uncomfortable - in the way he puts his family under the microscope and is dealing with his own inability to let go. I am watching lots of personal documentaries right now and this one just felt a bit cringy. It's well done but I wonder what impact the filmmaking has had on the family. I would be very interested in seeing the family make a film about that, years later how did it impact them?.

It didn't have as strong of universal appeal as a number of other films I am watching along similar themes - but regardless this is a very well done film and emotional and much more entertaining than one might expect - if you can get past the slightly uncomfortable vibes.
