Having a friend who was forced to give up her dreams, even we closest of friends, her family, the country she had come to call home, (my father threatened to do the same thing to me, but luckily he knew to not expect much of my brother, & he really wanted a lawyer in the next generation,) I was excited to watch this.
In HS & University, I took a lot of classes on creative writing, as well as cinematography, & the Psychology behind movie making (I found creative ways to fill my general credit requirements,) so I not only understand, but RESPECT both subtle and overt- like this one- tools, if you will, that are USUALLY used to drive and enhance a movie. What they used here was silence, which can be a VERY powerful tool, if used properly! However, in this case, the subject matter was FAR too important to be conveyed without words, or at least subtitles! Without it, there's NO context, the father looks like a heartless tyrant, who sold his 10 yo (we don't even know how old she is, but looking at her standing with adults, she looks 9-10) to some old pervert who looks like a 50yo, tall, version of Boris (Of B & Natasha) for a lot of money. Her mother looks afraid of him, like maybe he's abusive (though they did fight once,) she's a strong woman, she's dying inside, but keeps a strong face for her daughter's sake, after all, she was a child bride too, & probably has some deep resentment already because of it! The son loved his sister dearly, & felt protective of her, he feels he let her down because he didn't know, and had no power. He was his father's protegé, but end up hating him & resenting him for life. Then we have the youngest, the favorite. She was annoying, demanding, & jealous, she always wanted whatever her sister had or wanted, to the point that after her sister was tragically married off, she used that to further weasel her father to give her EVERYTHING she asked for, including stealing her sister's dream & based on the end, rubbed her face in it! She was, in the end, the one who broke her sister's heart the WORST! Now, this is just my SPECULATION, I'm making the point that without at at least SOME guidance, you don't know anyone's motivations, so you DON'T really know what's going on in something this complex! But I like to think I got pretty close!
This show would have gotten MUCH better marks, maybe 8 or 9, all they needed to do was GET THEIR POINT ACROSS! This movie could be SO valuable for helping families, like my friend!
