Jazz comes into it own...
planktonrules24 February 2015
Through episode 2 of "Jazz", this music was a relatively small-time thing. Most white folks had no interest and blacks were still, in some cases, decrying the moral decay brought by jazz. However, here it's becoming more mainstream and is going through some of its best times--Harlem during the Renaissance and the creation of several superstars. Among the many people and tops covered are some people such as Bix Biederback (dead before 29), Sidney Bechet (a real nut), Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Benny Goodman, the Cotton Club, Big Bands, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington as well as the color line. Like the previous episodes, it's very educational but also is a delight because of the great music. Well worth seeing and done in the usual style you'd expect for Ken Burns' films--with great narration (Keith David), the extensive use of photos and a few film clips as well as interviews with a few select individuals. All in all, another great chapter.
