Don't forget the father!
keith-8012 September 2020
I'm broad agreement with the other reviews for the last episode.

Remember ... the father of Marianne was a brutal bully. So, presumably her mother was used to abuse, the brother was following his fathers lead, as was Marianne in following her mother's example. Connel broke this pattern in refusing to harm Marianne. So, really, the story was kind of about overcoming, or dealing with, a dysfunctional family.

Transformative

Warning: Spoilers
I can understand some people's frustration with the finale and i was a bit bummed myself. The happy ending with them going to NY together would have been more pleasing. However, after all the breakups and reconciliations this last one transformed them and made their relationship stronger. The New Year's scene was very emotional: they're among the same people from many years go but now they're out in the open with their feelings for each other. After all they've helped each other through over the years, finally and they have a chance at a future together as well as the future apart from each other.

The end and new beginnings
xmasdaybaby196617 May 2020
Probably not the finale that people would have wanted but touching and moving and maybe allow for a future series but could another series be as strong and evocative? A shorter episode but strong on storyline and acting especially having arched a TV interview with the pair to realise that Daisy Edgar-Jones us actually a British actress so did well to keep up the Irish accent so well. On the other hand, perhaps Paul Mescal's accent surely should have softened as the series progressed to show the way people change their voices by the people they come into contact with. A great series, looking into the way people are affected by their choices, the words that are or aren't spoken and how they feel about the way they make others feel. Great viewing.

Seriously beautiful
ak20207 May 2020
This series has been seriously deep and beautiful at examining a fluctuating relationship between two young people.

I am sorry but the reviewer above has missed the whole point - but is (of course) entitled to the opinion.

Watch it right through. You will be uplifted.

It's hard to hate

Warning: Spoilers
There was no reason this show couldn't have had a happy ending, the backwards and forwards got predictably frustrating. Understanding that not everybody gets the ending they want, it felt like whenever they were apart they wanted to be together, and together there was always something that pulled them apart. Just because I didn't get the ending I, and others wanted, I still feel this series has been a brilliant and emotional ride. In a way I would have rather it ended openly, giving the viewer the chance to interpret what they wanted. The ending had a way of making you feel like their story was completely over, and it neither made me happy or sad, but a little disappointed. In a way they had done what they could for each other, but the fact that they both seemed happy and content, only to end in such a way was undoubtedly confusing. From what we have seen, it is clear they struggle to have romantic relationships beyond their own, it makes me question any future they could have apart. In the end this series shows you what type of person you are, whether you knew their relationship would never work, or you hopelessly, romantically wished they would end happy together and like me you wanted it to end with that new year's kiss. I gave this show an 8/10, the acting was beautiful and the story raw, the characters grew together and they made you care for them, but the predictability was hard to swallow. The saying 'If you love someone, let them go,' is questionable in this story's case, after all, how many times can you let someone go?

This episode isnt even worth talking about the specifics of.

Why? My answer is because this episode is LIFE. Life in its purist form. Its everything this show has earned and put in our hearts in the lovliest 22 minutes i have ever seen. The truth is i couldntn control the crying after this episode, which i watched about 15 mins ago whilst i am writing this. This show makes me feel like maybe I deserve something in life. That is why i cried and still have a tear in my eye. No matter this issues of charecters or people, people truly deserve hapiness and LIFE. Its worth living. The past, the present, the future.

great

I love it. After 12 episodes, it is the only fair thing to write about this profound inspired series.

A profound useful one, no doubts.

Great acting, splendid story and a book for read for remeet the crumbs of adaptation.

In short, maybe just an event after waes of fantasies and Marvel, blockbusters and not very smart comedies.

A depiction of life in its basic traits, with gestures, words and relations.

So, precious, I suppose, can be the honest definition of a series proposing nothing than a very old fashion portrait of everyday love, friendship, change, education, relations. More significant, after the end of this episode, you feel Normal People as personal, very personal part of yourself.

Some find it should have more multiculturalism - not me
envanloo15 August 2021
Canada777 wrote that this is a heartwrenching, passionate love story, but it should have more multiculturalism. Are we 'woke', man? This story plays in Ireland, and then it is just realistic that it is not full of Africans, Asians an Inuit. If you have a film playing in Africa, we do not expect loads of white people in it.

Let's not exaggerate this 'woke' movement, please, and just enjoy the story.

Just that, fucking New York! I would've love a Happy ending for Connell and Mariane. I feel a little frustrated, but in the end, that's was the shows about. About people who have everything, but can't be happy!

grow a PAIR!
dr-kelly199028 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very talented couple so passionate for and dependent on one another, and yet the storyteller didn´t have the courage for a better closure!, Marianne with all her justified insecurities could only find love, caring, safety, family-like and a contenting sense of belonging with Connell. Connell on the other hand forgot all about his sickness and suffering when having her close in his life and yet would rather risk everything including his psychological wellbeing for a vage dream JOB! But not have the guts to take a step closer.

It would´ve been more logical for normal people with stable backrounds to be apart for the 100th time, but not for these two.

Tediously Predictable.
W011y4m54 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This series has continually relied upon a repetitive pattern & structure throughout - so much so that by halfway, the storytelling thus becomes formulaic & dull - where the audiences are able to reliably make an accurate preemptive prediction regarding which direction the narrative is headed in - so by the finale... It's just a frustrating annoyance.

With each episode, the two character's relationship status changes; if they begin the episode apart in one, they shall end it together & if they start together, they'll inevitably be separated by the credits etc. & So on & so forth.

Hence, needless obstacles are repeatedly thrown in their way in order to manufacture unnatural & contrived emotional conflict to fill the run time... It's just a shame that such promising potential in the earlier quarter of the season seems wasted.
