A movie about a bereaved woman who thinks her husband has been reincarnated as a dog. Yes, you read that right!!! From a bonkers premise comes this charming whimsical tale.

In a golden period of Irish language cinema, this can hold it's head up high. I admit early on, I had doubts if I'd like it but I soon became as sucked into the premise as the lead ( see what I did there ) The dog becomes a hurling coach to a shy kid and a thorn in the side of a pursuer of the widow and Frank soon becomes a valued member of the community. And no that WASN'T a lump in my throat near the end. !!!

Recommended.

A Real Charmer
brentsbulletinboard6 August 2023
How refreshing it is to watch a sweet, touching family film without it oozing enough sugary syrup to make even the most hardened stomach nauseous. Such is the case with the latest offering from writer-directors Rachel Moriarity and Peter Murphy, a warm, loving, heartfelt tale about a profoundly saddened and withdrawn Irish widow, Róise (Bríd Ní Neachtain), who springs back to life with the arrival of a mysterious stray dog whom she suspects is the reincarnation of her late husband. While those in her life are supremely skeptical, she can't deny the plethora of synchronicities that occur that reveal the tail-wagging rascal's true nature. By coming back, "Frank" helps his wife emerge from her prolonged grief and assists others, such as a geeky young neighbor boy in becoming a proficient hurling player, a sport that the dog's human predecessor fanatically loved. But there's even more to Frank's return, as seen in a heart-tugging series of unexpected twists and turns that will positively leave viewers teary-eyed with joy. Despite a few predictable story elements, "Róise & Frank" nevertheless manages to delight in a natural, emotionally grounded way that never seems forced or artificial, thanks to its fine performances, breezy writing, beautiful cinematography of the Irish landscape and affecting original score. This enchanting Gaelic language offering will charm audiences to no end without ever resorting to schmaltz or manipulation, earning every reaction it evokes. Like its four-legged protagonist, this one could indeed leave viewers coming back for more.

Rosie - oh and there was something else

Warning: Spoilers
(Spoiler alert for the following) The film is warm and entertaining, the dog is great, I also understand that the ending should be like that so that she can move on, but that's exactly what bothered me about the film, it's seemingly also about a dog, but ultimately it's all about humans again, and with the usual human arrogance that also bothered me about Fluke, for example. A dog is not only valuable when it is a reincarnated human, an assistance dog or performs sporting achievements. A dog/animal is great because and if it is (no more and no less than) an animal, and for that you can and must love it and not scream hysterically when it runs towards you or after you etc. A little more kindness and consideration in dealing with the animal and respect for the animal (as such) would have made the story much better (and been enough for 10 stars). At least in the end they fortunately kept/rescued the other dog.

A hidden gem

"Rosie and Frank" is a cinematic hidden gem that may require subtitles for some, but it's a universal tale of heart and emotion that transcends language barriers. The characters' authenticity and the heartfelt story shine through, making it a must-see, even if you're not familiar with the language.

The bond between the family and their furry friend (Frank) adds an extra layer of charm to the film. The lovable dog's antics and loyalty provide moments of pure joy and affection, making this movie an even more perfect choice for a family evening,

So, give it a chance - let the subtitles lead you into a world of family bonds and emotions that will leave you deeply touched and wanting more.

Beautiful and informed. Loved it!

The movie is set in Waterford, Ireland, and you can tell as there's plenty of Irish scenery to admire. Frank (the dog) does a fair amount of heavy lifting. There's also plenty of hurling action.

The subject matter is weighty (dealing with grief), but handled in a very moving and beautiful way. There are plenty of light-hearted moments throughout.

The audio is Gaeilge. I am a beginning learner and had to use subtitles, but I was able to comprehend a surprisingly large percentage of the dialogue. This certainly influences my rating of the movie, but I believe non-Gaeilgiori will enjoy the movie as well.

This is a truly wonderful movie.
